The iPad 3G has a reasonable touchscreen keyboard, certainly one that's much easier to use than that on the iPhone, for all but the shortest messages, and the ability to remain in e-mail and Twitter contact, wherever you are, is, for some, a major consideration. If you bought a WiFi-only iPad and, in six months' time, someone offered you 3G functionality for an extra £100, the chances are you'd jump at it. Best to make that choice now, while the deal is still on the table.

I will start by saying that I've never been much of an Apple guy. Most of my background lies within PC-based platforms, namely Windows. However given my experiences as a dev/sysadmin for NBF and other projects, I've obtained knowlege of linux systems. I see most of Apple's products as proprietary Linux distributions with pre-packaged hardware. In fact, everything Apple has to offer seems to be sold as a unit and the iPad is no different.

Want a giant iPhone that can't make calls? Happy to buy the first version of something before the manufacturer gets it quite right? You're going to love the iPad. Looking for a funky alternative to a low-cost laptop for a bit of e-mail, web surfing and a dash of WP? That initial attraction will quickly turn to bitterness and recriminations as you slowly uncover your new partner's bad habits. On the fence? Stay there until the kinks are sorted and Apple lowers the drawbridge a little so the iPad can get acquainted with the outside world a little more.

Despite all these issues, we enjoyed our time with the joojoo. As with the iPad, it turns browsing the internet into a more enjoyable, social affair than with a netbook or laptop, and it does have its advantages, Flash and multitasking, principally. But if we're honest, it's never going to rival Apple's iPad. It may be cheaper, have a larger, wider screen and that all-important Flash support, but crucially, it doesn't come close to the quality and ease of use of Apple's groundbreaking tablet. If you're willing to pay this much, save up the extra for an iPad, or just wait for the throng of cheap slates that are looming into view.

Our review of Apple's iPad:an oversized iPhone or the future of personal computing? The iPad is the first in a series of products that could transform the industry, with Dell and others producing their own rivals. So should you get the iPad? Well it really depends on what you want to do with it. On the one hand, if you're looking for a netbook replacement, you're definitely not going to find it here - while the iPad can do a bit of lightweight word processing and presentations, the many drawbacks mean that you're probably not going to be able to get rid of your notebook altogether. On the other hand, if you're looking for an e-book reader and something to use when travelling to read documents, news and to surf, then the iPad is actually an ideal device thanks to the long battery life, great screen and the sheer number of news sites with support for the iPad. As for gaming, there's potential there, although right now I don't see any games which really show off the potential of multitouch and the large screen.

Chances are you've already made up your mind whether or not to get one, so if you have your choice is just whether to get an iPad 3G or just the iPad Wi-Fi. Whichever iPad you choose, it does many things very well. There's no doubting it: the iPad 3G is a great device and it certainly lays down the gauntlet for tablet competitors. It's expensive – and through monthly costs far, far more so than the iPad Wi-Fi. We do think the iPad Wi-Fi is a more compelling option. Especially when you consider that despite the lack of 3G in that model, you can still get online using other means, such as 3's MiFi.

The iPad has had a strange effect on my life. The first month as a tablet owner is a lot like being a new parent. There are soaring highs, as well as long periods of frustration and crashing lows. Apple’s new baby was a joy to welcome into my life, but it has also ushered in its own share of headaches and annoyances. What the iPad does, it does well, but there's an overwhelming sense that Apple's tablet has yet to reach its true potential.

Like any 1.0 product, the iPad has its rough edges, the worst being the erratic Wi-Fi reception. However, the basic design is spot on. It’s small enough to be portable and comfortable to use, yet large enough to work really well for tasks such as web browsing, reading books and playing video. The battery life is outstanding and the A4 processor seems to have power to spare.

There are two conclusions to be made about the Apple iPad. As a product you could buy, it's a tempting but ultimately unconvincing device. Anyone with a particular penchant for Apple, or enough money to burn and a love of shiny tech, are likely to buy into it. Unlike the iPhone, however, it doesn't traverse the boundary between early adopters and the mass market. Most people probably wouldn't know what to do with it. What it does do is demonstrate the potential of the tablet as a segment. In time, with a few software updates, tweaks to the hardware and a more compelling library of content to draw on, it could well deliver on the hype it currently receives. It'll also spur on competitors to compete with it, which can only be a good thing.

This is an impressive debut for an ambitious new product direction for Apple. The iPad is a wholly new product, yet one that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever used an iPhone or iPod touch. It’s a futuristic gadget the likes of which we’ve never seen before, yet also a ‘version one’ that may soon be viewed with the same nostalgic amusement we have for the chunky original iPod. Yet today’s iPad is already, undeniably and enthusiastically a great product. It’s fantastic inside and out, blending cutting-edge hardware and innovative software into a single, unified whole. If you love the latest whizzy gadget, you’ll find nothing whizzier. If you want a web-connected device that fits in the space between phone and PC, you’ll find the iPad a joy. Devices like this change the way we view technology, and holding the iPad feels like you’re holding the future.

The Apple iPad has been out for about a month and I have been a user of a 16GB Wi-Fi model since day one. I would not call it critical to the success of PC Perspective yet, but I can see it reaching that point with a few changes.

The Apple iPad is a great way to blow one's bonus -- especially for gadget lovers, Web addicts and people who want to get online in the simplest way possible. The iPad may not be as 'magical' as Apple would have you believe, but it remains a very entertaining device and is a nice look into the future of media consumption. The iPad isn't magical, as much as Apple wants you to believe this is the case. It is, however, a very entertaining device that’s currently being held back by a lack of content and a number of missing features. The iPad will only get better and will ultimately succeed off the back of Apple's existing application and content ecosystem.

As a piece of hardware, the iPad generally does its job well. We could always use more processing power, which is made more evident by the larger screen and thus higher user demands on the system (Intel did have a point with restricting Atom's usage to smaller screen devices only). The lack of any integrated camera is bothersome but I doubt at this point we'd have a great video chat application to use given the current state of the iPad app union.

The Apple iPad ushers in the era of tablet computing, with a slate-style handheld that looks nothing like a typical computer. In fact, the iPad is more reminiscent of an oversize iPhone than a laptop. But because the iPad's screen is three times larger than that of the iPhone/iPod Touch, you'll be tempted to use the iPad for activities you wouldn't consider doing with an iPhone. Apple looks set to shake up casual computing with a tablet that offers clever design and ease of use. But that streamlined approach may also be the iPad's weakness.

It’s the best portable Web surfing device. The initial Wi-Fi version sort of limits where you can use it, though. You can wait for the 3G version and its $15-per-month AT&T 3G service, or get a MiFi from Sprint or Verizon (which also can be used with your laptop). Slip the MiFi in a pocket or backpack and you become a walking hotspot. We’ve been using Sprint’s, and it works perfectly.

For everyone, then? No, of course not, but that’s a pretty unrealistic criteria for success. Ask, instead, whether Apple have succeeded in delivering the elusive middle device, the thing that slots into the tricky niche between smartphone and notebook. Remember, too, that such a niche isn’t necessarily so small as to accommodate only one product – this isn’t a case of “the iPad way or the highway” – but more of a satisfying one core criteria: do you choose to pick it up and put it in your bag when you go out, do you choose to carry it from room to room with you around the house?

Overall the iPad 3 is a decent upgrade from the iPad 2 in a number of key areas. The retina quality display is the most impressive and there’s a faster processor and better cameras. 4G connectivity is handy if you want that feature. All this for roughly the same price refurbished makes this a no brainer.

Google Nexus 10 vs Apple iPad 2 comparison review
Origen: PC Advisor Inglés EN→ES
That the Nexus 10 is only £10 more than the iPad 2 is, on the face of it, outrageously good value. The Nexus is brand new, has an unsurpassed display, and offers the best all-round performance of any tablet around. The iPad 2 remains on sale to give Apple fans a lower-priced alternative to the full-specced iPad. But there are reasons for this situation. The Nexus 10 is heavily subsidised by Google as a means of getting people to use Android and - critically - buy apps and media from Google Play. Were Samsung to make and sell it on its own terms its likely the price would be nearer that of the Galaxy Note 10.1 - nearly twice as much. That doesn't stop it being a good deal of course. That said the iPad 2 remains a good deal. The combination of Nexus 10 and Android 4.2 alone offer a similarly high quality experience as Apple's iPad. If you’re buying a tablet because you’re looking for nifty software and want to keep your costs down, you’re still better off with iPad 2. But the Android platform has its advantages, also, and the Transformer Pad TF300 remains the best value choice today—especially if you opt for the 32GB version at $400. Not only will you get a lot of bang for your buck at that price, but the Transformer Pad’s Tegra 3-optimized graphics are capable of some impressive tricks over the iPad 2, if the handful of games optimized for the platform appeal to you.

The Transformer Prime triumphs over the iPad 2 in almost all areas, but the Apple device is still an excellent tablet in its own right. Business users may still be tempted by the Apple ecosystem, which is embraced by IT admins. Android is still viewed with caution when it comes to security, but the Prime is a jack-of-all trades in terms of usability. The ability to use the device as a tablet or netbook is something that proves hugely valuable and its multimedia capabilities are unmatched by Apple at this time.

Apple MacBook Air 11in vs iPad 2 head-to-head review
Origen: V3.co.uk Inglés EN→ES
Although it's technically a draw, the MacBook Air wins out in key areas of performance, interface and connectivity. The laptop is definitely the better option for productivity on the move, and can be used in an office because it has excellent specifications. Those who just want to browse the internet on the move would be better suited to the iPad 2. We recommend buying a Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 and using the extra money to invest in a mobile phone contract with a generous data allowance. The tablet can be tethered to the smartphone when Wi-Fi is not available, and this will save on having to pay two separate contracts. Given the choice, V3 definitely opts for the laptop over the tablet, as it is so much more useful and is definitely worth the extra investment. WINNER- MacBook Air.

Overall, though, the iPad 2 experience is overwhelmingly positive. We wish the cameras were better, and that Apple would open up its closed system just a bit; but in all it’s a resounding success in a market where Apple’s every competitor has so far fallen short of greatness. If you’re in the market for a tablet, you’d be mad not to put the iPad 2 at the top of your list.

So my recommendation is, if you are already hooked into the Apple economy and iTunes then the iPad 2 will fit right in with the rest of your stuff. However, if you have been resisting the temptation to jump in, then you may want to wait a little longer. The Android platform is much more open and flexible, and with a pluthera of Android tablets on the horizon, prices will be dropping. As for me I will hang onto this tablet for a while so I can compare it against some new Android tablets, but in the end I will sell it because it is not a fit for me.

Apple set out to reinvent the tablet user experience and judging by the overwhelming success of the iPad, I would say they have succeeded. As incredible as today's tablets are, the truth is that we are only at the infancy of tablet computing. So where does the form factor go from here? Aside from the obvious answers of thinner, lighter and more powerful, it's anyone's guess really. We will continue to see various display sizes and connectivity options. If 3D display technology really takes off in the coming years, we could possibly see that implemented into future tablets. On the business side of things, I think something like Microsoft's Courier, a failed dual screen tablet prototype, could really spice things up. And of course, let's not forget the software, the future is all about the software.

In summary, the iPad 2 is most impressive from an engineering standpoint. Slashing thickness and weight, adding a dual core processor, while still maintaining 10 hours of battery life is a frankly staggering feat. As for which iPad 2 you should buy, it really depends on your needs. For most people, we’d recommend at least the 32-GB model ($600), which should come in handy if you plan to use the iPad for gaming, watching video or creating media. If you already own a smartphone with tethering or hotspot options (which all iPhones have now), you won’t need to plunk down extra money on an iPad 2 with 3G, so go with a Wi-Fi-only model. Those who plan to use lightweight applications — reading, web surfing and e-mail — will be fine with the 16-GB base model for $500.

Admittedly, the iPad 2 is more of an evolutionary step for Apple, akin to the jump from iPhone 3 to 3GS. If you already own an iPad then you’re not missing out too much by waiting for the next iteration before you upgrade. If you held off from buying over the last 12 months, then the iPad 2 is a brilliant reward for your patience. Get out and buy it. It's taken nearly a year since the launch of the first iPad for any manufacturers to come close to creating a tablet that can rival it. Even then, those that look promising like the Motorola Xoom run such an early OS (in Android 3.0) it will be a while before they can rival the iPad in terms of apps. With the Blackberry Playbook, HTC Flyer, LG Optimus Pad and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 all to come, the tablet market looks really exciting over the next few months. And with its mind-blowing new build, new cameras and improvements in the engine room, coupled with the unmatched App Store/iTunes/iOS ecosystem the next-gen iPad is clearly the tablet to beat.

Should you dump your old iPad and get an Apple iPad 2? If you’re happy with your current iPad, there’s no reason to dump it just because there’s a shinier, newer one. If you’ve invested in iPad accessories such as a dock or case, you probably won’t be able to use them with the new iPad. Of course, if there’s someone in your family who has been clamouring for an iPad, now might be the time to buy an iPad 2 and hand down the old model to them. If you’ve become a major user of FaceTime or other video-chat apps, upgrading to an iPad 2 makes more sense, thanks to the cameras. People who want to bestow an iPad on an older friend or relative who is a bit reluctant to use technology can now add video chat to the mix of features that make the iPad a compelling device. For everyone else, though, Apple has put together a superbly capable, class-shaping tablet, which can now legitimately take on not only other slates but lighter ereaders such as Amazon’s Kindle. The iPad 2 benefits from Apple’s cohesive hardware and software development together with the vast third-party developer support of the App Store, consistent and simple to use in equal measure. Apple’s vision of the post-PC world isn’t quite here yet – the iPad 2 still works best with, and at times demands, integration with a “proper” computer – but when it comes to tablets the iPad 2 maintains its position at the vanguard of the market.

For those looking for a premier, top end tablet experience, Apple's iPad remains the best choice, featuring the best screen on market and a streamlined operating system that allows it to match the performance of similar devices packing more powerful components. This means that while we would recommend the iPad over the Nexus 7 to users with cash to burn looking for a top end tablet experience, we'd equally recommend the Nexus 7 over the iPad to anyone shopping on a budget or casual tablet users looking for basic media and web browsing services.

If you already own an iPad 2 – or to a certain extent, the original iPad – the core tablet experience remains similar; if you avoid looking at any new iPads, you could carry on as before. But when you’ve seen that new screen, it will be hard to resist the temptation to stick your old iPad on eBay and pay the cash difference for the upgrade

Some have called the iPad 3 an incremental upgrade. I disagree. As I think this comparison shows, the new iPad is substantially better than the next-best competitor. When judged relative to the competition the iPad 3 is the best product Apple makes and among the best consumer electronics products available today. Everyone else is still trying to catch up.

The Apple iPad is the standard by which all other tablets are judged. The iPad 3 does nothing to change that. The iPad 2 was the best tablet you could buy, so it’s little surprise that the iPad 3 has replaced it in that role. The new iPad is the best tablet money can buy and its release has transformed the gap between it and the competition into a canyon. Our praise can’t be much clearer than that, and the new iPad is worth every word of it.

Apple New iPad 3 Wi-Fi + 4G The iPad remains my favourite tablet. I prefer the screen size and aspect ratio; it delivers the right performance and functionality for what I want a fondleslab to do; USB – without the need for an adapter – would be nice, but otherwise it has the connectivity I need; third-party apps have got me over the walled garden without jailbreaking; the battery life is great. Android buffs and Apple biters won't care anyway. But the iPad 3 is a good tablet, and its screen sets a higher bar for Apple's rivals to try and leap over.

Priced identical to the iPad 2, the new iPad continues to provide the best experience in a tablet form factor. If you are looking to jump on the tablet-bandwagon, the new iPad should certainly be on top of your list. For those of you who want to upgrade, the new iPad is better than any Android tablet that I have reviewed in the last year as well as a substantial improvement over the original iPad. About the only segment of people that I might not recommend the new iPad to is one that owns the iPad 2. Amongst them, it will mostly be the tech savvy that would want the new display and GPU and I say that because I belong to this exact group. However, my wife is fairly happy with her iPad 2 and not the least bit interested in getting the new one.

New iPad: The Skeptic’s Review
Origen: Slashgear Inglés EN→ES
That ecosystem is the new iPad’s biggest draw. The hardware feels, for the most part, like it’s settled; I’d expect Apple to tweak it in future iterations, yes, but the company has a tendency to polish its designs and then avoid change for its own sake. That’s certainly been the case in Apple’s computing lines, and the iPad looks to be following the same route. I’d like to see Google – and others, for that matter; Windows 8 certainly has its points of interest, particularly with ARM support for more frugal, multimedia-centric models – mount a more compelling offense, if only because I like Android and I think the competition is good for the end consumer, but there’s no doubting that, for a great proportion, the new iPad ticks most of the boxes. Upgrading from my first-gen iPad is a no-brainer; the problem for Google and others is that opting for an iPad is likely to remain a no-brainer for many new tableteers, yet to be convinced with what the rest of the market can deliver.

Extra horsepower from the revised quad-core graphics processor has been funnelled into maintaining the iPad 2’s top-notch graphics performance when tasked with driving four times as many pixels. An improved rear camera is not universally essential, and nor is an uprated modem for next-gen cellular services that are unavailable in most parts of the world. But just a short time using the iPad with its entrancing Retina display gives ample reason alone to consider an upgrade, even if you have an iPad 2. Once you’ve tried a third-gen iPad, iPad 2’s text looks plain blurry. For a newcoming tablet buyer, Apple has just handed you, at an unassailable price, the device that unequivocally retains the iPad at the zenith of tablet computing.

The Retina Display was the most complex and difficult bit of engineering, and yet that seems to be working fine. Visual creatures that we are, people are downright entranced by the screen. I have to add my voice to it. Even with ClearType on, my desktop screen looks downright chunky by comparison. It's certainly a beautiful screen, and the device is very fast and responsive. Hopefully Apple learned its lesson from Antennae-gate over how to handle a PR problem. They don't have the Reality Distortion Field to rely on any more.

Apple could be accused of delivering more of the same with the new iPad. More pixels, more speed, better camera. And that's exactly why it's our favorite tablet. This sequel builds on everything we loved about the iPad 2. Is it worth the upgrade? For owners of the original iPad, definitely. iPad 2 owners will need to weigh the benefits of the Retina display and additional graphics oomph versus the expense. If you don’t already own an iPad or an Android tablet then the new iPad could be the one that finally breaks down your resistance. It certainly blows away the Android competition and should ensure that the iPad continues to dominate the tablet category – especially with the iPad 2 still on sale at a reduced price. Existing owners of the iPad 2 are faced with a trickier decision. The new display is lovely, but is perhaps more of a luxury than a must-have. Steve Jobs would have approved of the new iPad. “It’s Resolutionary” Apple says of the new iPad, and we have to agree. Last but not least there’s the question of value, where the iPad 3 continues to impress because it won’t cost a penny more than the iPad 2 did at launch. That means the 16GB Wi-Fi model can be yours for as little as £399, which is superb value for the amount of tech the iPad 3 packs into its casing no matter how you look at it. Do keep in mind though that, unlike on an Android tablet, memory is not expandable, so you’re stuck with what you buy. Unfortunately, Apple charges a rather hefty £479 for the 32GB Wi-Fi model and it goes up from there, bringing it more in line with the kind of pricing we were expecting for Apple’s newest tablet. The new iPad/iPad 3 will be available in most countries on the 16th of March.

We’d direct you to your nearest Apple Store to check one out for yourself...but until November 2, you won’t be able to.

Apple iPad Mini vs Amazon Kindle Fire HD vs Google Nexus 7

Even though Apple has the gorgeous design and user-friendly OS, and we’re sure the performance will be super speedy like its current iPhones and iPads, the price just doesn’t add up. Paying another £110 on top of the Kindle Fire HD’s price tag for a device that offers the same storage and high quality screen is a tough sell.

If the thought of dropping over £300 on a big iPad has stopped you from joining the Apple slab brigade so far, the iPad Mini should look very tempting right now. And if you’ve ever thought the iPad was just too big, or if you’re the kind of person who carries both a big-screen tablet and a Kindle every day, the iPad Mini could well be the only device you really need. It looks sexy, you’ll barely notice it in your bag, and it’s got the apps to back up that price tag.

iPad Air vs iPad 4 comparison review: Which is the best full-size iPad?
Origen: Macworld.co.uk Inglés EN→ES
If you're on the iPad 3 or earlier, the iPad Air is a highly appealing buy, and a bit of a bargain, we'd say. But paying the same price all over again a year (or less) after shelling out for the iPad 4 may be less clear-cut, unless you're flush with cash. Do you find your arm aching after using your iPad 4? If you find this annoying, the iPad Air is the answer to your prayers. But for us - and, we'd guess, for most users - arm ache is only an occasional annoyance, and not really worth spending upwards of 400 quid all over again.

80% iPad 4 with Retina display review: Is the iPad 4 a good budget alternative to the iPad Air?
Origen: Macworld.co.uk Inglés EN→ES
To sum up our review, we think Apple's iPad 4 with Retina display is a superb tablet that won't let you down, with a fast processor and superb build quality. The last nine months have seen apps and games grow ever more demanding, putting the iPad 4's A6X processor in a still stronger position, and this is clearly the most future-proofed of Apple's iPad offerings. iPad 3 owners, nevertheless, may not wish to upgrade unless they're attracted by 4G's potential for faster mobile web access - 4G will get better, but for now remains expensive and limited in its coverage. Strongly consider the ultra-portable iPad mini, which is slower and can't match the sparkling display but is cheaper and will do the job for most users.

It perhaps will come as little surprise that the iPad Air has won in a head-to-head review over its predecessor, the iPad 4, but is it worth the upgrade? We think so. While there's not that much in the way of new specs beyond the upgrade to Apple's 64-bit A7 chip and the firm's iOS 7 operating system, the iPad Air is so much more comfortable to use due to its slim profile and low weight.

Origen: V3.co.uk Inglés EN→ES
Summing up the battle of the flagship tablets, the Apple iPad 4 manages to win out by triumphing in three out of the six categories over its rivals. Apple's tablet trumped the Surface Pro and Nexus 10 as our favourite for design and display, and proving the best out of the bunch for battery life. Despite winning half the categories, the Apple iPad 4 failed to win the major battles of performance and software, losing out to the Surface Pro due to its ability to run the full version of Windows 8. However, we felt Microsoft's tablet failed to deliver on too many occasions, such as in design and display to warrant a win over Apple's high-class device.

Origen: PC Advisor Inglés EN→ES
The fourth-gen iPad looks no different from the iPad 3 (and even iPad 2) with Apple sticking to the same rectangular shape with rounded corners and chamfered edges. There's no change in dimensions so it's 186 x 241 x 9.4mm and it weighs 652g (662g for the cellular model). Of course if you don't like the size of the iPad, there's always the iPad mini as a smaller option.

Apple iPad vs Microsoft Surface RT vs Google Nexus 10 head to head review
Origen: V3.co.uk Inglés EN→ES
Despite very stiff competition from its new rivals, the Apple iPad retains its crown as top 10in tablet, boasting a compelling complete ecosystem offering, a decent - albeit not on a par with the Nexus 10's - screen, fast performance and excellent battery life. However, we should point out that for those looking for a full-on laptop replacement, the Surface RT is currently the only valid option, featuring support for Microsoft's email and a full version of Office 2013. The only downside of this is that people wanting to use the Surface in this way will have to buy its Touch Cover keyboard add-on, which adds an extra £80 to the device's cost.

We can’t say that the fourth-generation iPad is an entirely positive upgrade, then. It’s massively quick, and remains our A-List tablet due to its sumptuous screen, the general quality of its hardware and the fantastic selection of tablet-specific apps and games in the App Store. However, that reduced battery life does put a dent in its overall appeal.

Microsoft Surface RT vs iPad 4 comparison review
Origen: PC Advisor Inglés EN→ES
It really is difficult to say one of these tablets is "the tablet you should buy" as the needs of each person are completely different. We can say - in very loose terms - that if you're looking to buy a tablet to be used alongside your laptop, then the iPad 4 is probably the more polished of the two. However if you want a tablet that you can put in your bag and use instead of your laptop, then you'd have more of a fighting chance with the Surface (and its Touch Cover) in your arsenal. On a side note it's worth mentioning again (in case you missed it) the iPad 4's app store wipes the floor with the Surface's, so if it's apps you're after, then we suggest you go for the iPad 4 all day long, however, if the Surface gets its apps in order then it has the potential to be huge and a real game changer.

It’s daft to say Apple’s fourth-generation iPad is its best yet - how could it not be? If you're sure you want an iPad, fanboy or not, it's the one to go for. Still, there’s no need at all to upgrade if you have an iPad 3, of course - wait for the 5, at least. I wouldn’t go from an iPad 2 if it wasn’t for the retina display, though the new model’s performance hike is welcome. Having to cope with a new connector is less so, but new buyers won’t be overly inconvenienced, though they may baulk at the price.

The third-generation iPad arguably didn’t need refreshing; in fact, if Apple hadn’t opted to change to Lightning, it could realistically have held off changing its largest tablet until early 2013, as per its typical yearly refresh cycle. That makes for a reasonably straightforward upgrade decision if you’re a 3rd-gen iPad owner. Unless you’re desperate for Lightning – perhaps you’ve also got an iPhone 5, and want to use all the same accessories rather than buy the adapter dongle – then we’re yet to see apps that really demand the potent A6X chipset.

With the iPad Air having one round to the Galaxy Tab S's four, the Samsung tablet is the clear winner of this head to head review. Featuring a better display, better camera and noticeably better battery life, the Galaxy Tab S is one of the finest tablets currently available. However, with four of the rounds having resulted in draws and the iPad Air remaining the more secure option, it was a closely fought battle and the Galaxy Tab S's victory isn't too surprising considering how far through its product lifecycle the Apple tablet is.

The iPad Air is the first iPad that doesn't have any obvious room for improvement. Of course Apple will improve it before long, likely with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor and some other unknown upgrades. But we're getting to the point where the iPad doesn't really need anything else. All the most important areas – weight, thickness, screen quality, battery life and performance – are all in great shape. If you want an iPad that you won't need to upgrade for several years, then the iPad Air is a great place to start.

Overall, while the iPad Air and Surface Pro 3 are both tablets, they're aimed at very different audiences and are therefore difficult to directly compare. The Surface Pro 3 is designed to fit the needs of professionals who would prefer not to carry around both a laptop and a tablet. Perhaps they're creatives, or businesspeople, or even journalists. The iPad Air can cater to those audiences too, but not always entirely, and that's what Microsoft has been trying to point out (it says 96 percent of iPad owners also own a laptop). But the iPad Air is still very powerful, can achieve most day-to-day tasks, and also offers up thousands of tablet-optimised apps for your entertainment, communication, education and productivity.

Which iPad would we recommend? Obviously that depends on your needs. If portability is top priority, the iPad mini 2 remains the best option, although the iPad Air is so much slimmer and lighter than previous 'full-size' iPads that it's close to catching up. The iPad Air can be used one-handed for quite a long time without tiring the arm, which makes it great for reading - although if that's all you want to do with your iPad, you could save some money and just get the old iPad mini (or a Kindle, at that). The A7 processor on the new iPads make them superb games machines, and ideal for photo and video editing, especially for the next few years as such apps get more demanding.

There's no doubting that with the iPad Air Apple has made its best tablet so far. It's absolutely beautiful to look at, has a stunningly fast processor, excellent battery life and an amazing touchscreen. While the iPad 4 is far from out-of-date, the power and size on offer here could be compelling enough of a reason to upgrade. For most people, we think the hardest decision is going to be one of size, and whether they should buy the iPad Air or the smaller, but identically specced, iPad Mini with Retina Display. It's a tough call and the incredibly lightness and slim case of the iPad Air may just swing it for the larger tablet: it's something we'd happily carry everywhere. However, with two of the rounds resulting in draws the battle has been a close one and both tablets certainly have merit in the workplace. The Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 offers users a sizeable display, an array of productivity-focused applications and services, a robust battery life and a useful S Pen stylus. In many respects a triumph, the iPad Air also introduces compromises to hit the low-weight/thin-case targets. Sound quality through the new stereo speaker has deteriorated, and although a matter of taste we found the iPad mini-style case loses the premium feel of preceding generations of iPad. The iOS 7 interface, not popular with every user, cannot be avoided on this device and it suffers some stickiness in app zooming. Ultimately though the iPad Air will suceed by simple nature of its new weight – the lose of almost 200g is so significant to its handling, and means it could encroach on E Ink ebook readers; only with the power and versatility, not to mention gorgeous colour screen, of a real iPad.

If portability is top priority, the iPad mini 2 is still the best option, although the iPad Air is so slim and light that it's close to catching up; the iPad Air can be used one-handed for quite a long time without tiring the arm, which makes it great for reading - although if that's all you want to do with your iPad, you could save some money and just get the old iPad mini. The A7 processor on the new iPads make them superb games machines, and ideal for photo and video editing, especially for the next few years as such apps get more demanding. But the iPad Air has the larger screen to go with those activities - we'd rather edit movies on a 9.7in screen, and games are more immersive on the larger device. Hopefully we've summarised the strengths and weaknesses of Apple's new iPads effectively, but our last word would be this: if you heart is set on one of the new iPads, is portability or the screen your first priority? The two lines have got closer on both fronts, but the iPad Air remains the best option for a stunning visual experience, while the iPad mini 2 is a great buy if you want to slip a fast, powerful computing device in a handbag or rucksack pocket.

Origen: Tech2.in.com Inglés EN→ES
The Apple iPad Air starts at Rs 35,900 for the 16GB, Wi-Fi model and we feel this is a bit too much for what’s on offer. The drastic weight loss and new internals aside, we don’t see why someone would buy the Air instead of the 32GB iPad mini with Retina. Not only are you getting double the capacity but it’s spec-for-spec identical to its larger sibling. We’ve also seen that 16GB is simply not enough for iPad apps and your media files, so there’s another problem. If Apple had fitted a better camera (8MP iSight from the iPhone 5) and Touch ID (from the 5s), then there would be a better distinction between the two tablets and perhaps, the high starting price of the Air could be justified. Overall, if really must have the extra 1.9-inches of the Air, then go for it but we strongly suggest you get the equally well equipped 32GB iPad mini with Retina for the same price.

This is truly the new iPad we've wanted for a long time, at least as far as the design and form factor is concerned. With the iPad Mini, it was clear that Apple's focus would be on improving the portability and use comfort. The only drawback is that the thinner aluminum on the back does not feel as solid as the previous generations. But, without doubt, the best tablet in the market is now even better.

iPad Air vs Nexus 10 head-to-head review
Origen: V3.co.uk Inglés EN→ES
For yet another year Apple has secured its place as king of the 10in tablet space. However, given the fact that the Nexus 10 is over a year old at this point, this isn't really all that surprising. We're amazed that the Nexus 10 managed to stack up as well as it did against Apple's new iPad Air given its age. We can't wait to see what Google has up its sleeve for the next Nexus 10, and, given the ongoing usefulness of its original, it will undoubtedly be impressive.

Summarizing the iPad Air is tricky business. One one hand, Apple has done some great things here, most notably with the physical design. The iPad Air isn't just lighter than its predecessor, it's almost half-a-pound lighter, which is a significant reduction in weight that's both noticeable and appreciated.

In many respects a triumph, the iPad Air also introduces compromises to hit the low-weight/thin-case targets. Sound quality through the mono speaker has deteriorated, and although a matter of taste we found the iPad mini-style case loses the premium feel of preceding generations of iPad.

Origen: Techspot Inglés EN→ES
The display on the iPad Air is no longer the highest resolution panel found on a tablet but it continues to look as good as ever. I have zero complaints with the IPS display as colors and text were sharp and vivid while brightness remained a strong point. The 4:3 aspect ratio will still cause some to gripe compared to 16:9 offerings that are more suited to video and the outdoor performance isn’t anything to write home about. Either way, I suspect this screen will continue to be used in future iPads as there’s simply nothing wrong with it. If you’re looking to pick up a full-sized tablet this holiday season, the iPad should be near the top of your list if Android isn’t a priority for you. In the event you already own an iPad, an upgrade to the Air should be a justifiable investment should you have the third generation tablet or older. If you’re rocking the fourth generation, I would probably stick with it until next year’s model shows up.

80% iPad Air review: Apple's thinner, faster iPad is a triumph... with some compromises

Apple has always said that the iPad isn’t intended to replace a laptop, and if you need to run the full version of Microsoft Office then there are many Windows laptops, as well as tablets such as the Microsoft Surface, that will be more suitable. However, the arrival of Apple’s iWork and Microsoft Office Mobile proves that the iPad Air can certainly handle productivity software when it needs to.

The iPad Air is the best iOS tablet to date – with a sleek design, excellent performance and battery life. The iPad was already the best large tablet out there. If it had any deficiencies, it was really in terms of weight and size, and that’s where the iPad Air shines. It’s still got a battery that will last for 10 hours, and now it’s twice as fast as it was before, opening the door for even more apps that can boost personal productivity or just entertain you that much faster. It’s right there in the name: The iPad Air is still an iPad, but it’s lighter and thinner and twice as fast to boot. If you want a tablet you can comfortably hold with one hand, look elsewhere. Otherwise, look no further than the iPad Air.

The iPad Air features an impressively slender form factor and, thanks largely to its A7 processor and optimizations in iOS 7, it still manages to perform twice as fast and deliver just as much battery life as its predecessor. In fact, Apple’s latest tablet, as it exists, is definitely one of the best (if not the best) tablet out there right now. However, I can’t help but feel that it could be even better. Where’s my TouchID? How about a bigger, better camera on this late 2013 tablet? I suppose this opens the opportunity for an iPad Pro, with such premium features. Or just next year’s Air. But I can’t help but want them now.

The iPad Air is, undoubtedly, the best iPad Apple has produced yet, and by far the most comfortable full-sized tablet we've used. We're not sure the inclusion of a 64-bit chip is worth users getting too excited about yet. While it offered a slight bump in performance, and likely aided the improvement in battery life, the iTunes App Store is still desolate when it comes to 64-bit optimised apps. The only real improvement – besides the slightly better performance and battery life – is its design, and the new-look thin and light tablet makes it worth the upgrade.

Just as there's more than one great computer, there can be more than one great tablet: The slender iPad Air lifting its touch-centric apps up on a pedestal, the simple Kindle Fire helping everyone along, and the businesslike Windows tablets shuttling their Office documents and Photoshop files. The iPad mini (2012) was an iPad 2 experience in a smaller form; unable to run iOS 7 properly with all of the animations and transparency effects smoothly and fluidly. But even, so it sold millions. People clearly wanted a smaller iPad. The iPad mini with Retina display improves upon the iPad mini (2012) in every way. It’s now equally as fast as the iPhone 5s and iPad Air with the same A7 processor, M7 motion coprocessor, 1GB of RAM. It’s so fast, it’s obvious that Apple designed this device with the future and iOS 8 in mind.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 vs iPad mini with Retina display: Apple and Samsung's mini tablets go head to head

It's difficult to decide which tablet is best without having both devices in our lab for thorough testing. I am an Android user, and would take the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4's larger, higher-resolution screen, more compact size and weight, potentially faster performance, micro-USB port, better cameras and fingerprint scanner over anything the iPad mini has to offer. But if you are a fan of Apple's devices, the software alone may make this decision for you.

100% Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display review
Origen: Expert Reviews Inglés EN→ES
There's no doubt in our mind that the iPad Mini with Retina Display is the best small tablet. It perfectly balances screen resolution and size with portability, with Apple producing a tablet that fits comfortably in one hand. Build quality is excellent, too, putting this tablet above the cheaper, but still great, Google Nexus 7. Most importantly, with this model Apple has removed any compromise between this and the iPad Air. Personally, we slightly prefer the larger screen of the Air, especially as that tablet doesn't feel a lot bigger than the Mini. Still, if you want to save a bit of money or need a tablet that can be used comfortably in one hand, the iPad Mini is a brilliant choice.

It’s testament to the sheer quality of Apple’s efforts that the iPad mini with Retina display doesn’t feel outlandishly expensive. Other tablets, such as Google’s Nexus 7, or the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX, offer substantially better value, but the iPad mini is more powerful and longer-lasting, and the sheer quantity and quality of choice in the Apple App Store remains ahead of rival devices. For most people, the Google Nexus 7 remains the better buy, but if you can afford it, the iPad Mini with Retina display is the finest compact tablet out there.

If it’s a smaller, lighter iPad you are after you can’t go wrong with the new iPad mini with Retina display. It’s better than last year’s model in all the ways that really matter, especially in terms of the screen and the speed. While the iPad mini costs slightly more this year than the original iPad mini did at launch, we think the increased cost isa small price to pay for the updated technology. While it would be nice if the iPad mini 2 had slimmed down, it’s hardly fat, and the iPad Air is practically the same thickness.

80% iPad mini with Retina display review: a superb tablet in almost every way
Origen: PC Advisor Inglés EN→ES
The iPad mini with Retina display is a fabulous tablet. The screen is excellent and more than worth the minimal weight gain. Performance is also excellent, and the 64-bit processor makes this much more future-proof than the original iPad mini. The higher price (compared to the original cost of the iPad mini) may be frustrating, but it’s arguably better value than the iPad Air as well as being more portable. If you can afford it, you won’t be disappointed.

From a design standpoint, there’s really nothing to see here that wasn’t seen already in the initial version of the iPad mini, but the overall package is far more compelling. The form factor suits those who are only interested in smaller tablets that can be used in one-handed operation, but more importantly, the iPad mini with Retina display offers plenty of reasons for those who ignored the first edition to finally bite.

Origen: Techspot Inglés EN→ES
It’s clear after using the device that the iPad mini with Retina display is the best small-sized tablet that money can buy. Its build quality is second to none, combining a portable form factor with premium materials, and performance that is on-par with the iPad Air, which is exactly what you want to see despite its smaller size. Apart from the performance, the key improvement over the first-generation iPad mini is the display, which packs 3.1 million pixels into a 7.9-inch 4:3 panel. The crispness is certainly eye-catching and fabulous for reading text, and while the display is not without its flaws (gamut-wise), it’s reasonably easy to simply gloss over them. Of course it’s entirely up to whether you prefer the size of the iPad mini or iPad Air, but the former excels in the small-tablet arena.

The iPad Mini with Retina display is such a huge improvement over the original that it is hard to use the new one and even consider looking at the older one. In essence, Apple has taken all the things they did with the iPad Air and then offered them in the smaller tablet and with a $100 lower price than the Air. The display in particular is incredibly sharp and a beauty to behold.

Dear-ly beloved: Apple’s costly iPad Mini with Retina Display
Origen: Reg Hardware Inglés EN→ES
Would I recommend the new Mini? To anyone already in the Apple ecosystem, yes; to OS-agnostic new buyers, no. The new iPad Mini is a very nice mid-size tablet, but I honestly can’t see a reason for Joe Soap to favour one over, say, the Nexus 7, or the Kindle Fire HD or HDX if you don’t mind being tied to Amazon. That’s not because the Mini is an inferior product, simply because it’s a much more costly one.

If it wasn’t for the tiny niggles of colour reproduction, performance and price, we’d give the iPad Mini with Retina display the overall tablet crown. Colours look slightly more vivid and accurate both on the iPad Air (which also performs ever-so-slightly better) and key, cheaper rivals such as the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX. Then there’s price - now we know the Mini isn’t quite as good as the Air in absolutely every respect, making that £80 difference bigger than it may at first seem. The Retina Mini is now our favourite small tablet, beating the Google Nexus 7 to that coveted second spot in the list of the best tablets you can buy right now, and narrowly missing out on the overall top spot, which remains the lofty perch of its bigger brother, the iPad Air.

But if, like us, the size and feel of the Mini is of most importance, it offers such a boost in performance and display quality, it's worth the upgrade. The Retina resolution feels like the missing piece of the Mini puzzle and keeps it at the top of our tablet table. We thought the iPad Air was a stunning piece of technological invention; this just takes all of that goodness and puts it into a device that's more manageable in more real-life situations. We love it.

Just like the iPad Air before it, the iPad mini 2 has a strong case for being crowned the best tablet in its class. However, the iPad mini 2 comes with a serious set of solid and very price-conscious competitors. The iPad mini Retina has improved exactly where it needed to. Better screen, better camera and much faster processor are all present, but it’s not a wildly different experience from the original iPad mini. That’s no bad thing as the iPad mini 2 is one of the best small-form tablets on the market, even if the extra cost is a little hard to justify.

as good as the Air, just smaller
Origen: Engadget Inglés EN→ES
In the course of a year, the iPad mini has hit puberty, and matured quite a bit. It's an iterative update, for sure, but one that makes it vastly better than the original. Because it now offers a Retina display, fast connectivity and a powerful processor, the mini now shares top-tier product status with the iPad Air. This is precisely the iPad mini we've been waiting for, but it comes with a price hike of $70 over last year's model.

iPad mini Retina Display review – the holy grail of tablets
Origen: Slashgear Inglés EN→ES
As upgrades go, you can’t fault the iPad mini with Retina display. Apple took the two biggest complaints – speed and screen – in hand, and returned with a tablet that looks great, performs great, and still delivers on battery life and portability. The tempting option might have been to dilute the update so as to leave the iPad Air clearly in the lead as the full-sized flagship, but Apple is obviously so confident in the equal allure of each model, it has no reason to artificially delineate the range.

The iPad mini with Retina Display is simultaneously a splurge compared with 7-inch Android tablets and one heck of a value in the context of Apple's own tablet lineup. For $100 less than the full-size iPad Air, you get the same sharp screen resolution and blazing A7 chip in a more compact design.

So you're paying $170 extra here (up from last year's $120 difference) to get iOS apps rather than Android apps. If you're an iPhone user, or you're attracted by unique iOS exclusives like the Infinity Blade series of games, Toca Boca kids' apps, or the iWork office suite, that investment will probably be worth it. But I think all of those apps play even better on the big iPad. If you're looking for cross-platform applications like Kindle book reading, comics reading, casual games, or Web browsing, you can get them on a great tablet that costs a lot less. That makes the iPad mini a very highly rated tablet, but still not quite our Editors' Choice.
