There's no denying that the S101 is expensive compared to other SCCs - but when you compare it to small and light models from the big names it's an absolute steal. It also looks fantastic and if a 1024 x 600 screen is large enough for you to work on then it's an ideal travel companion. Throw in its glittering performance - especially when it comes to the hard drive - not to mention the massive 32GB of solid state storage and it's a very attractive proposition indeed.

After much speculation, ASUS has indeed launched a ‘high-end’ netbook. Though that sounds like an oxymoron, the Eee PC S101 should do a great job of appealing to those who have avoided buying an Eee PC because of its ‘low-cost, low-power’ package. Not so with the Eee PC S101. This gorgeous little machine has been designed for fashion-seeking individuals who view style as much of a factor as substance. Fantastic but incomplete netbook

With the basic parameters of what makes a Netbook fairly set in stone, it's becoming harder than ever for a new model to stand out from the crowd, as evidenced by largely identical recent Netbooks from Dell, Lenovo, and HP--though the HP Mini 1000's impressively large keyboard was a plus.
Asus packs the same basic components found in other Netbooks into a stylish, slim chassis for a modest premium in price, but some unfortunate keyboard-layout compromises make the S101 harder to use than it should be.

How much are you willing to pay for style? The Eee PC S101 ($699) is hands-down the best looking mini-notebook we have seen, and its thin size and small footprint make it a machine that you’ll want to show off to the world. However, the chunkier but cheaper Eee PC 1000H ($479) features a longer-lasting six-cell battery and a much larger 160GB hard drive. Similarly, our category favorite, the MSI Wind (street-priced as low as $479) also sports a better six-cell battery and a larger hard drive, plus a better keyboard than either Eee PC. Some may prefer the ASUS N10, which, though not as thin or light as the S101, offers a handsome design, a better-looking glossy display, and discrete Nvidia graphics for the same $699 price. But if a stylish netbook is what you’re looking for, the Eee PC S101 will meet your needs.

All told we like the S101 in the same way that we like most ultra-portables notebooks, because it's sleek, stylish and accomplished. Battery life is very good, while the keyboard, Touchpad and basic feature set are also excellent, even if you don't get much more than other cheaper netbooks. But price, as we all know, is an emotive issue. If you like your netbooks dirt cheap and care little for how they look and how you look using them, then it's obviously not for you. If, however, you've liked the idea of a netbook but find the current efforts a little unrefined, then the S101 is your only real choice. As such, even if it's not an "everyman" machine like other netbooks, we reckon the S101 deserves a recommendation because it's discernibly different from what else is available - something you can't say that often.

The battery life is great but it's the keyboard and screen that will ultimately win you over. With the S101, the Eee PC has finally grown up. It's been completely redesigned so it's sexier, lighter, and more appealing to anyone who knows who Manolo Blahnik is. The £449 price tag means it's more expensive and elitist than previous Eee netbooks, but Asus is pitching it as an alternative to comparatively pricey ultra-portables like the Sony Vaio TT series, or Toshiba Portege R500. Let's see how it fares. The S101 is a stunning netbook -- the best we've seen to date. Its battery life isn't quite as good as its some of its bedfellows, and it's a little more expensive, but it's the perfect choice if your mission is to make the Joneses look poor.

Netbooks tend to adhere to an incredibly precise blueprint: cram an Intel Atom processor, relatively small hard disk, wireless internet and a 10in screen into an off-white chassis that looks more toy than trend-setter and watch them fly off the shelves. Asus' latest Eee PC, however, veers away from this safe ground more than any netbook we've yet seen.
Fantastic looks fail to conceal the S101's fatal flaw: it's the same old netbook underneath.
