The S101 is something of a Kylie Minogue of mini-notebooks. It’s sleek and small, weighing 1kg and with a height of just under 2cm, and even comes complete with a glittery casing and keyboard. Like one of Kylie’s concert tickets it also has a high price tag. The price for such a special computer is £449, which is almost twice as much as the cheapest of its similarly sized competitors. In its defence, the S101’s looks aren’t the only thing going for it. An impressive alternative to a standard notebook, but one that justifies its price.

Mit dem S101 ergänzt ASUS seine Eee PC Produktfamilie um ein besonders elegantes Modell. Verglichen mit anderen Netbooks fällt sofort die schicke Optik und die hochwertige Verarbeitung auf, welche die inneren Werte fast vergessen lässt. Auch das geringe Gewicht von ca. 1 kg und die kleinen Abmessungen fallen positiv auf. Das Arbeiten unter dem vorinstallierten Windows XP Home fällt leicht, die Performance ist dank SSD sehr gut. Einzig der geringe Speicherplatz von insgesamt 32 GB, verteilt auf eine 16 GB SSD und einer 16 GB SDHC Karte, könnte zu Problemen führen. Wer das S101 aber hauptsächlich im Officebereich einsetzt, dürfte selten an die Grenzen des Massenspeichers stoßen. Wenn es doch einmal eng wird können sowohl SDHC Karte als auch SSD gegen ein größeres Modell getauscht werden. Für letztere Möglichkeit bietet der Speicherspezialist Super Talent kompatible SSDs an.

There's no denying that the S101 is expensive compared to other SCCs - but when you compare it to small and light models from the big names it's an absolute steal. It also looks fantastic and if a 1024 x 600 screen is large enough for you to work on then it's an ideal travel companion. Throw in its glittering performance - especially when it comes to the hard drive - not to mention the massive 32GB of solid state storage and it's a very attractive proposition indeed.

The Eee PC S101 ($699) is hands-down the best looking mini-notebook we have seen, and its thin size and small footprint make it a machine that you’ll want to show off to the world. However, the chunkier but cheaper Eee PC 1000H ($479) features a longer-lasting six-cell battery and a much larger 160GB hard drive. Similarly, our category favorite, the MSI Wind (street-priced as low as $479) also sports a better six-cell battery and a larger hard drive, plus a better keyboard than either Eee PC. Some may prefer the ASUS N10, which, though not as thin or light as the S101, offers a handsome design, a better-looking glossy display, and discrete Nvidia graphics for the same $699 price. But if a stylish netbook is what you’re looking for, the Eee PC S101 will meet your needs.

All told we like the S101 in the same way that we like most ultra-portables notebooks, because it's sleek, stylish and accomplished. Battery life is very good, while the keyboard, touchpad and basic feature set are also excellent, even if you don't get much more than other cheaper netbooks. But price, as we all know, is an emotive issue. If you like your netbooks dirt cheap and care little for how they look and how you look using them, then it's obviously not for you. If, however, you've liked the idea of a netbook but find the current efforts a little unrefined, then the S101 is your only real choice. As such, even if it's not an "everyman" machine like other netbooks, we reckon the S101 deserves a recommendation because it's discernibly different from what else is available - something you can't say that often.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 es un chip de video integrado (incorporado) en Mobile Intel 945GM chipset.  Es una versión con frecuencia más rápida del GMA 900.

Muchos juegos son difícilmente ejecutables con estos adaptadores gráficos o se ejecutan de manera muy lenta.

Intel Atom:

La gama Intel Atom es un microprocesador de 64 bits para portátiles, MID’s o UMPC’s baratos y pequeños. Lo especial de esta nueva arquitectura es la ejecución “in order” (en lugar de la usual y más rápida ejecución “out of order”). Por tanto, el número de transistores del Atom es mucho menor y por tanto más barato de producir.

N270: Procesador eficiente energeticamente, barato y lento de un solo nucleo para Netbooks. Debido a la ejecución in-order, el rendimiento por MHz es peor que el de los procesadores Core Solo o Celeron M.
