La generación Intel Kaby Lake parece bastante aburrida en principio. El proceso de fabricación no es nuevo, la microarqutectura tampoco - todo esto nos recuerda un poco a la renovación Haswell del 2014, que realmente no untrodujo ninguna ventaja notable.

Kaby Lake por otro lado es más que un mero renombre de los chips Skylake. Aunque el proceso de 14-nm básicamente no ha cambiado, el fabricante ha logrado optimizarlo considerablemente. Los resultados tienen una frecuencia sorprendentemente alta o un consumo muy inferior a la misma frecuencia, respectivamente. Según el rango de frecuencia, podemos ver mejoras de eficiencia de entre el 15 y el 25%; aún está por ver si la serie Core-m/Y de menor frecuencia puede ser aún mejor. También estamos deseando ver los modelos quad-core ULV. Están pensados para el 2017 y deberían presentar las mayores ganancias de rendimiento del segmento de 15W que hemos visto en años.

Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, también queremos alabar el decodificador de vídeo renovado, que no sólo soporta codecs nuevos como HEVC Main10, sino que también es mucho más eficiente que antes. En combinación con otras mejoras de eficiencia, los portátiles Kaby Lake deberían lograr un aguante de batería aún mayor que sus predecesores Skylake.
