Dell's Inspiron 1520 definitely makes an impression thanks to its lineup of color choices, but in terms of a performance thin and light system, it fails to really compete heavily with other notebook offerings. Much of this stems from the XPS lineup that neglects to have a model in this size range. Those on a tight budget might want to look at the Inspiron 1520 as a possible option though.

The Dell Inspiron 1520 under review here is the latest 15.4” in an ever-growing succession of what can be categorized as “consumer mainstream” notebooks offered by Dell’s Home & Home Office division. Since the release of the 1520, Dell has also made available a very similar machine, the Vostro 1500, which can be purchased from the Small Business site. Unlike the Inspiron 1520, which can be configured with any one of eight different colors, the Vostro 1500 is solid black. The Vostro also provides a Windows XP option, which is unavailable in the Inspiron 1520. Much of what I found while using the Inspiron 1520 is consistent with (to the point of being almost identical to) what has been written elsewhere. There was really only one thing about this notebook that bothered me, my preference for the all black Vostro 1500 notwithstanding: the play in the screen latch mechanism when the notebook is shut. Is this a big deal? I would say no, not at all.
There are so many positives, including the overall build quality, and so much flexibility in terms of configuration, the 1520 would seem to make a lot of sense for a wide range of notebook users, and a little bit of latch looseness should not be a determining factor.

If you fancy a notebook that will keep you connected, productive, and entertained on the go, the Dell Inspiron 1520 is quite a compelling option. Featuring a more attractive design than the E1505, with rounded edges and your choice of eight colors, this notebook packs a speedy Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 802.11n and Sprint's EV-DO Rev. A connectivity, as well as discrete graphics. Dell also goes the extra mile by offering 3GB of free online backup, the choice of ordering your system free of trialware, and--for the first time ever on a Dell consumer notebook--3G mobile broadband. We just wish it were more travel-friendly. With the 1520, Dell ditches the familiar (but heavily aged) silver-with-white-trim look for one that has more flash. Our model came with a colorful soft-touch Ruby Red lid, but you can also get it in Jet Black, Alpine White, Espresso Brown, Flamingo Pink, Midnight Blue, Spring Green, and Sunshine Yellow.

The update of Dell's popular E1505, the Inspiron 1520 has generated a lot of interest in the notebook community. It features a complete design update, the new Intel Santa Rosa platform, and the best graphics card Dell has ever offered in a laptop of this size. With this notebook, Dell is making a solid entrance into the 15” performance market. The 1520 has tangible benefits over other 15” notebooks that only offer the 8400M and 1280x800 resolution like the HP dv6500t, and it tends to be less expensive than similarly featured notebooks like the Asus G1S. The 1520 is a new direction for me in laptops. My last two have been 12.1” ultraportables—the Dell 700M and the XPS M1210. While I prefer the smaller size in most cases, I'm traveling much less now and have really been feeling the need for more powerful graphics and more screen real estate when gaming. I seriously considered the Asus G1S, but could not justify the cost. When Dell announced their new Inspirons, I was sold immediately.

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS: NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS es la sucesora con DirectX 10 de GeForce Go 7400 para laptops y es tecnológicamente más lenta que la tarjeta de video 8400M GT. El rendimiento es ligeramente mayor que el 7400 y por lo tanto puede representar juegos actuales fluidamente con detalles reducidos/resoluciones. Para personas que juegan ocasionalmente, puede ser suficiente.
Estas tarjetas también deben ser capaces de aguantar todos los juegos actuales, pero la mayoría de ellos en configuraciones de detalles medios y bajos y con bajas resoluciones. Juegos más antiguos, o menos exigentes todavía pueden ser jugados con buena calidad de gráficos.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Este es el sucesor Core Duo y el Core Solo con un pipeline más largo y con una velocidad entre 5-20% sin mayor consumo de energía. Adicional al diseño de Core Duo existe un cuarto decodificador, una unidad SSE ampliada y una unidad lógica aritmética (ALU) adicional.
Sus características son: 2 núcleos (cores), una amplificación de comando de 64-bit EM64T y 2 o 4 MB L2 Cache y 291 millones de transistores, que son acabados en 65nm. Mas allá de esto, todos los tipos soportan técnicas "Execute Disable Bit", SSSE3 (SSE4), Enhanced Speedstep, LaGrande y la mayoría de técnicas de virtualizacion (VT) Vanderpool.
El Core 2 Duo para laptops es idéntico a los procesadores Core 2 Duo para desktops, pero los procesadores para notebooks trabajan con tensiones más bajas (0.95 a 1188 Volt) y un Frontside bus clock (1066 contra 667 MHz). El rendimiento de laptops cuena con una frecuencia de 20-25% más baja que PCs Desktop debido a una frecuencia más baja de Frontside bus y los discos duros más lentos.
