As ever, the trade-off of buying a Windows Phone comes with the limited software selection, putting it a distant third behind iOS and Android in that respect. But if that's not a huge concern and you want a device that's distinctive in both hardware and software design, the HTC One (M8) for Windows delivers just that.

If you are looking for a phone running Microsoft's mobile OS, the HTC One M8 for Windows is the phone to buy. And even if your preferences stray toward other operating systems, the One M8 still deserves some serious consideration (there's an Android version, too). Windows Phone fans who aren't on Verizon may want to consider the Nokia Lumia Icon 1520 and its giant 6-inch screen, or the affordable $65 Lumia 635, but both are equipped with last-gen components and lack the combination of speedy performance and large feature set of the One M8. At $99, the One M8 for Windows costs less than the iPhone 6 while offering a larger 5-inch screen, more than 10 hours of battery life and competition-crushing BoomSound speakers. Windows Phone users rejoice, this is the phone you have been waiting for.

Overall if you're not looking to go with a Lumia then the HTC One (M8) for Windows isn't just a solid choice, it's the best designed Windows Phone 8.1 device we've seen. It's a welcome addition to Windows Phone, which is a platform growing stronger all the time. The only problem is you can't yet buy it in the UK. Here's hoping that changes.

HTC One (M8) for Windows review: Tinker, Tailor
Origen: GSM Arena Inglés EN→ES Archive.org version
HTC One (M8) has proven to be as capable as its Android counterpart and that's no surprise. But it's time to address the million dollar question now. The big elephant in the room we have been avoiding throughout this entire review. Is it possible to install Android OS on HTC One (M8)? The short answer is no. Not at this moment at least. HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M8) for Windows are identical phones with the same hardware and same bootloaders. If your bootloader is unlocked, theoretically you can install any ROM with any OS. But someone had to port it first and there is no such project underway.

The HTC One M8 for Windows is a wonderful smartphone that should appeal greatly to the Windows Phone crowd. However, currently in the US, the Nokia Lumia Icon is the better all-round phone, and camera lovers should look at it instead. And when (or rather if) the new M8 comes over to the UK, it will have to butt heads against the similarly excellent Lumia 930 which scooped one of our Best Buy awards.

There can be no doubt: HTC knows how to make a high-quality smartphone. It’s not just how well they command Android, either. Now we can call the HTC Windows Phone 8X a bit of a mis-step without feeling like HTC didn’t have another trick up their sleeve. Now, unhindered by the hardware requirements of old, HTC succeeds in creating one of the finest Windows Phone devices to date.

Still, the idealist in me hopes that there’s more to come from HTC's Windows Phone vision. Microsoft recently loosened its grip on Windows Phone hardware, a policy decision that was instrumental in allowing the HTC One (M8) to come to market. That breath of fresh air makes me yearn for something more. Cloning my existing Windows Phone apps and settings onto new hardware is appealing. But I’d like to see HTC interpret Windows Phone with its Sense aesthetic, too.

Whether it runs Windows or Android, the $99 HTC One M8 is one of the best smartphones on the market. The company continues to set itself apart from the competition with its beautiful design, vibrant display and excellent audio quality. Throw in the great performance and impressively long battery life, and the One M8 for Windows is a match for any flagship phone on the market.

But despite my camera hangups, the Windows Phone version of the HTC One is undoubtedly a good phone. It’s available on either Verizon or AT&T’s 4G LTE networks, and unless you’re doing seriously intense, non-stop activity on the phone, you can easily get a day or more’s battery life out of the handset. If you mostly use your handset for emails, internetting, social media, and watching video, you might enjoy this handset as much or even more than its Android counterpart.

If you’re the kind of person who values personality over utility, someone willing to deal with a few rough edges in exchange for a more colorful experience, Windows Phone is a better fit than ever before. And with its beautiful fit and finish and HTC’s custom software additions, the One M8 is possibly the platform’s greatest showcase. In short, this is one of the finest Windows Phones ever created. If it’s a Microsoft smartphone you’re looking for, and you have no need for a PureView camera, you can’t do better than the HTC One M8 for Windows.

HTC One (M8) for Windows: Top hardware for Windows Phone fans
Origen: Computerworld.com Inglés EN→ES Archive.org version
So, do you want this phone? If you're not a fan of Windows Phone, the HTC One (M8) won't convince you to become one. Window Phone still suffers from the well-documented app gap and you won't be able to get some popular apps such as Instagram, Google Maps, YouTube and others. But if you are a Windows Phone user looking for a new phone, this is clearly the one to get. With its high-end hardware, the Windows Phone 8.1 Update and the introductory $100 price with a two-year-contract deal at Verizon, you won't find a better value in a Windows Phone device today.

Getting down to business, there’s no arguing that HTC is once again in the game of making Windows Phone smartphones. After a lengthy wait since its last offering, we’re relieved to see that they’re able to deliver a polished, high-end phone that’s competitive in the space. However, there’s still a part of us that wishes for something original – rather than just taking the original flagship, and swapping out the software for Windows Phone 8.1. You can say that it’s a lazy approach, but nevertheless, it’s just nice to see them in the game again.
