Packard Bell pone en el mercado un equipo equilibrado, perfecto para usuarios que buscan movilidad pero no quieren las limitaciones de un netbook. Diseño cuidado, rendimiento notable, un disco duro de gran capacidad y excelente autonomía son los aspectos que más nos han convencido de esta propuesta. El ordenador tiene un precio de 399 euros, IVA incluido. En el lado negativo el teclado, de estética conseguida pero falto de precisión y un trackpad que no está a la altura del resto del equipo. Por pedir, nos hubiera encantado encontrar un teclado retroiluminado, al menos como opción.

The line between netbooks and laptops continues to blur, with screen sizes from 9-inch up to 15-inch in the mix and performance specifications with a similarly wide range. Packard Bell sees its dot s and dot m as mainstream netbooks and the larger of the two, the dot m reviewed here, has an 11.6-inch widescreen LCD and runs on a 1.2GHz, 64-bit Athlon L110 processor with 2GB memory. This is a great little machine, though more a small notebook than an oversized netbook. Vista doesn't hold it back much and the extra memory and strong ATI graphics help with this. However, if you can afford the six-cell battery, go for it, or stay fairly close to a power socket all the time.

Will Packard Bell's smallest netbook offer big performance? The dot s is Packard Bell's 10.1-inch netbook. Unlike its larger brothers, the dot m and dot m/a, it stays safely in known netbook territory by featuring an Intel Atom processor and running Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. As with the dot m, the sample we reviewed was a pre-production unit so we were not able to provide full benchmarking results, such as battery life testing. While the Packard Bell dot s doesn't really bring anything new to the netbook market, it is a well-rounded machine that should be on most people's list of machines to check out before making a purchase. As long as the touchpad issues are rectified, we are big fans.

Although the dot S2 is frighteningly similar to the Acer 532h, there are a few differences. The touchpad is an improvement and the extra bundled software a welcome bonus, while it also manages to out perform the Acer-branded version in terms of battery life. I also can’t help feeling that if Acer is to continue producing netbooks under the Packard Bell brand, it would do well to differentiate them from the Aspire One series a little more.

Packard Bell: Packard Bell es una subsidiaria de la basada en Taiwán Acer. Es un nombre usado por dos compañías de electrónica de consumo distintas. La primera fue un fabricante de radios americano fundado en 1926, que más tarde se convirtió en un contratista de defensa y fabricante de otros dispositivos de electrónica de consumo, como aparatos de televisión. Teledyne adquirió el negocio en 1978. En 1986, inversores compraron el nombre para un recién fundado fabricante de ordenadores personales. Originalmente la compañía produjo ordenadores no continuados en los USA, posteriormente fueron producidos para el mercado europea. NEC asumió su control a finales de los 1990s. Acer la adquirió en 2008 A pesar de la similitud de sus nombres nunca ha habido ninguna relación corporativa entre el original o el tardío Packard Bell y Hewlett Packard, o Bell Systems. Packard Bell es un fabricante de portátiles internacional, pero con una cuota de mercado bastante escaso y pocos análisis. Hasta ahora (2009), la compañía se ha orientado a portátiles duros.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 es un chip de video integrado (incorporado) en Mobile Intel 945GM chipset.  Es una versión con frecuencia más rápida del GMA 900.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Tarjeta gráfica integrada (memoria compartida) de las CPUs Intel Atom N4xx. Minimamente más rápida que una GMA 950 y por tanto no adecuada para juegos 3D o videos HD (solo tiene aceleración MPEG2)

Estos procesadores gráficos pueden mostrar únicamente juegos antiguos, fluidamente.  Juegos actuales pueden ser presentados con detalles sustancialmente reducidos.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: GPU integrado (memoria compartida) em el chipset GM45 (Montevina). Gracias a dos shaders más y una frecuencia de núcleo más alta, es mucho más rápido que el antiguo GMA X3100. Aun así, no es recomendable para jugadores (juegos DirectX 10 no son fluidos y pueden ser jugados sólo con configuraciones muy bajas). El procesador de video integrado es capaz de ayudar a decodificar videos HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2), como para una reproducción fluida de Blu-Ray con CPUs lentos.

Intel Atom:

La gama Intel Atom es un microprocesador de 64 bits para portátiles, MID’s o UMPC’s baratos y pequeños. Lo especial de esta nueva arquitectura es la ejecución “in order” (en lugar de la usual y más rápida ejecución “out of order”). Por tanto, el número de transistores del Atom es mucho menor y por tanto más barato de producir.

N270: Procesador eficiente energeticamente, barato y lento de un solo nucleo para Netbooks. Debido a la ejecución in-order, el rendimiento por MHz es peor que el de los procesadores Core Solo o Celeron M.

N450: El CPU Intel Atom para Netbooks con controlador integrado de memoria y GPU GMA 3150. El rendimiento del sistema debe ser solamente mínimamente más veloz que la combinación anterior Atom N280 / GMA 950.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Este es el sucesor Core Duo y el Core Solo con un pipeline más largo y con una velocidad entre 5-20% sin mayor consumo de energía. Adicional al diseño de Core Duo existe un cuarto decodificador, una unidad SSE ampliada y una unidad lógica aritmética (ALU) adicional.

Sus características son: 2 núcleos (cores), una amplificación de comando de 64-bit EM64T y 2 o 4 MB L2 Cache y  291 millones de transistores, que son acabados en 65nm. Mas allá de esto, todos los tipos soportan técnicas "Execute Disable Bit",  SSSE3 (SSE4), Enhanced Speedstep,  LaGrande y la mayoría de técnicas de virtualizacion (VT) Vanderpool.

El Core 2 Duo para laptops es idéntico a los procesadores Core 2 Duo para desktops, pero los procesadores para notebooks trabajan con tensiones más bajas (0.95 a 1188 Volt) y un Frontside bus clock (1066 contra 667 MHz). El rendimiento de laptops cuena con una frecuencia de 20-25% más baja que PCs Desktop debido a una frecuencia más baja de Frontside bus y los discos duros más lentos.
