There is a mini VGA adapter in the box and this can allow you to hook it up to a separate panel but I found the 1280x800 crisp and sharp at the moment there is no Java or for that matter Silverlight.

At best, the Series 5 makes an interesting companion to your primary computer. It could be the machine that you take with you to the coffee shop when you don’t want to lug a full sized notebook. It might even be feasible to use a Chromebook like the Series 5 as your only laptop if your primary machine is a desktop computer. But for $430 and up, I’d expect a user experience that’s undeniably better than what you get from a $300 netbook and unfortunately that’s not something this laptop offers.

The Series 5 is great for watching video, playing casual games, and doing light tasks such as creating spreadsheets and documents, but it really can't handle much more heavy lifting. A fast boot time and bookmarks masquerading as apps can't make up for the fact that we can't use Google Docs offline, we have to hunt around for our local files, or that the Series 5 can only deal with one peripheral at a time. Consumers looking for an ultraportable system under $500 would do better with the AMD-powered ASUS Eee PC 1215B ($439), or its Nvidia Ion brother, the 1215N ($469), which offer much better performance and a full Windows operating system for around the same price.

Together with even more powerful, affordable, and energy-efficient processors, cheaper flash memory, and a handful of major revisions to the Chrome OS, a computer built to run a web browser and little else might make sense. Until then, there are plenty of Windows-based laptops in the £350-£400 range that may not have the sleek look of a Series 5 Chromebook, and may not boot up as quickly, but offer such vastly superior functionality that I can't imagine recommending a Chromebook instead. For now, laptops based on Chrome OS feel like a novelty for tech enthusiasts. Even Android 3.0 tablets feel more powerful, flexible, and useful.

A decent screen and the best audio we’ve yet heard from an Ultrabook combine with good usability and connectivity to make up for its average battery life. We’re especially excited that Samsung is introducing dedicated Radeon graphics into the Ultrabook market with its 530U4B range, though this specific model sticks with Intel’s integrated solution. For those who want an optical drive, it is also the only (current) choice.

Just as it has a hybrid storage system, the Samsung Series 5 Ultra is something of a hybrid ultrabook: Its 14-inch screen and built-in optical drive will appeal to users who find 13.3-inch, DVD-less ultrabooks too limiting—although we can't help thinking that a lot of those people would be served by an ultrabook plus a $50 USB DVD drive for occasional use. Premium form is where it falters slightly. The metal screen backing and palm-rests felt great, and the other fibreglass surfaces felt fine. Unfortunately, the 14in (1,366 x 768-pixel) matte screen had slightly washed-out colours and ordinary viewing angles. The screen hinge also had an annoying tendency to stick slightly, with strong resistance during opening. And while loud, the speakers were of ordinary quality, as was the webcam’s recording quality at 720p.

Again, the only performance bottleneck we experienced with the Series 5 compared to a typical Intel-based Ultrabook was the included 750GB hard drive. Since all Ultrabooks use a SSD or HDD with mSATA SSD for cache, it's unfair to compare these laptops without spending the extra $100 to upgrade the Series 5 with a SSD. Once upgraded, the SSD allowed this AMD-based ultrathin to compete head-to-head with the latest Ultrabooks; generally exceeding the performance of the ASUS Zenbook UX32 Ultrabook equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor. Keep in mind that the ASUS UX32 is priced at $899, so for just $749 ($649 street price plus $100 SSD upgrade) you can have a laptop with better overall performance.

That special touch. The Samsung Series 5 540U3C is the successor to its forefather, the 530U3C. On the outside, the two notebooks look as similar as a pair of eggs; but in terms of the technological innards, Samsung has jazzed up the compact subnotebook with Windows 8 and a touchscreen -- and they've affixed an asking price of 1000 Euros (~$1320). If we had an editors award we’d be giving it to the Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch right now because it’s a well-built, well engineered and good looking Ultrabook that can handle many duties well. There’s the possibility of upgrading SSD and memory and the touchscreen adds fun and productivity. A good set of ports with a full-size SSD card slot completes the line-up. If Samsung had thrown in a 1600×900 screen the package would be near perfect. But that’s possibly what the new Samsung Series 7 Ultrabook is there for so as that feeds in to the market, look for pricing offers on the Series 5 Ultra Touch. At $849 it’s already good value but we feel that there’s at least $100 to be had in offers later this year. As a back-to-school Ultrabook as the new Haswell-based Ultrabooks feed in, this could be become 2013’s best mainstream Ultrabook.

Samsung: Samsung Group es el mayor conglomerado surcoreano y fue fundado en 1938. Intel HD Graphics 4000: Tarjeta de video de procesador de gama alta de los modelos Ivy Bridge. Ofrece una frecuencia diferente en los diferentes modelos de CPU (ULV a quad core de desktop) y, por tanto, un rendimiento diferente.

AMD Radeon HD 7500G: Tarjeta de video de procesador que está embutida en las APUs de la serie A6 ULV Trinity de AMD. Con base en la arquitectura VLIW4 de la serie para desktop Radeon HD 6900.

AMD Radeon HD 7500G + HD 7550M Dual Graphics: Combinación de dos tarjetas de video (CrossFire asimétrico) de una Radeon HD 7550M dedicada y un tarjeta de video de procesador 7500G (en el núcleo del procesador de la Serie A). Apenas en algunos casos es más veloz que la GPU dedicada únicamente y, además, algunas veces sufre de micro intermitencias.

AMD Radeon HD 7620G: Tarjeta de video de procesador que está embutida en las APUs de la serie A10 LV Trinity de AMD. Con base en la arquitectura VLIW4 de la serie para desktop Radeon HD 6900.

Estas tarjetas también deben ser capaces de aguantar todos los juegos actuales, pero  la mayoría de ellos en configuraciones de detalles medios y bajos y con bajas resoluciones. Juegos más antiguos, o menos exigentes todavía pueden ser jugados con buena calidad de gráficos.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M: Una GPU de gama media y la más veloz GeForce GT como parte de la serie 600M

NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M: Varios modelos basados en diversos chips de la generación Fermi. Específicamente, la GT 630M existe en las variantes GF108/GF106/GF116, pero todas son esencialmente GPUs GeForce GT 540M o 555m, con el nombre modificado. También existe una variante GF117, producida en una litología de 28nm con consumo reducido de energía.

AMD Radeon HD 8750M: Tarjeta de video de gama media basada en la arquitectura GCN.

Intel Atom:

La gama Intel Atom es un microprocesador de 64 bits para portátiles, MID’s o UMPC’s baratos y pequeños. Lo especial de esta nueva arquitectura es la ejecución “in order” (en lugar de la usual y más rápida ejecución “out of order”). Por tanto, el número de transistores del Atom es mucho menor y por tanto más barato de producir.

N570: Procesador Atom dual core con una frecuencia un poco más alta que la del Atom N550 y, por lo tanto, aun más lento que procesadores CULV.

Intel Core i5:

2467M: Procesador ULV de ahorro de energía con una tasa de reloj de 1.8-2.9 GHz gracias a Turbo Boost. Ofrece una integrada HD 3000 con una lenta tasa de reloj de  350 /  1.6-2.3 GHzgracias a Turbo Boost. Ofrece una integrada HD 3000 con una lenta tasa de reloj de 350 / 1150 MHz y un controlador de memoria DDR3-1333.

2450M: Procesador Dual-core basado en la arquitectura Sandy Bridge con una tarjeta de vídeo integrada y controlador de memoria dual-channel DDR3. El CPU tiene una frecuencia de 2,5 GHz (Turbo Boost 2,8-3,1 GHz) y el GPU con 650 (1300 MHz Turbo).

3317U: CPU ULV basado en Ivy-Bridge en el segundo trimestre de 2012. Ofrece una frecuencia de 1,7 - 2,6 GHz y un GPU HD 4000 (350 - 1050 MHz). El TDP es de 17 W.

3210M: Veloz dual-core basado en Ivy-Bridge, incluye GPU HD 4000, frecuencia  de 2,5 - 3,1 GHz

3337U: CPU ULV basado en Ivy-Bridge en el primer trimestre de 2013. Ofrece una frecuencia de 1,8 - 2,7 GHz y un GPU HD 4000 (350 - 1100 MHz). El TDP es de 17 W.

Intel Core i7:

2637M: Procesador ULV de ahorro de energía con una tasa de reloj de 1.7-2.8 GHz gracias a Turbo Boost. Ofrece una integrada HD 3000 con una lenta tasa de reloj de  350 / 1200 MHz y un controlador de memoria DDR3-1333.

3610QM: Un procesador quad-core basado en Ivy Bridge con frecuencia de 2,3 GHz con soporte para Turbo Boost hasta 3,3 GHz. Ofrece un GPU integrado HD Graphics 4000 funcionando a 650-1100 MHz con un controlador de memoria DDR3 de dos canales.

3517U: Veloz CPU ULV basado en Ivy-Bridge en el segundo trimestre de 2012. Ofrece una frecuencia de 1,9 - 3,0 GHz y un GPU HD 4000 (350 - 1150 MHz). El TDP es de 17 W.

AMD A-Series:

A6-4455M: Trinity ULV de 17W, 1 módulo a 2,1 - 2,6 GHz, GPU HD 7500G

A6-4400M: APU Dual-Core de la línea Trinity con una tarjeta de video integrada Radeon HD 7520G.

A10-4655M: LV-Trinity (25 W), 2 módulos 2,0 - 2,8 GHz, GPU HD 7620G

Intel Celeron:

867: Procesador Dual-core de Ultra Bajo Voltaje basado en la arquitectura Sandy Bridge con una tarjeta de vídeo integrada y controlador de memoria dual-channel DDR3. Gracias a la marca Celeron, muchos recursos del núcleo Sandy Bridge están desactivados.

Intel Core i3:

2367M: Procesador ULV energéticamente eficiente con frecuencia de 1,4 GHz sin Turbo Boost. Ofrece una HD 3000 integrada con baja frecuencia de 350 / 1000 MHz y un controlador de memoria DDR3-1333.

3217U: CPU ULV basado en Ivy-Bridge en el segundo trimestre de 2012. Ofrece una frecuencia de 1,8 GHz (sin Turbo Boost) y un GPU HD 4000 (350 - 1050 MHz). El TDP es de 17 W.

3110M: Dual-core basado en Ivy-Bridge, frecuencia de 2,4 GHz (sin Turbo), incluye GPU HD 4000
