Toshiba's Excite X10 remedies many of the problems of its predecessor the, Thrive 10, but we're not convinced it has what it takes to succeed when the majority of Android tablets struggle commercially. Performance is good, build quality is decent and it's light, but claims of superlative thinness ring hollow when other tabs are already painfully slim and the magnesium alloy finish doesn't have that premium metallic feel some buyers are after.

The most valuable feature of the Toshiba Excite 10 LE is its light and ultra thin body that features a stylish design. Overall the tablet delivers a good user experience, with a good quality display and regular performance. We have to keep in mind that it was introduced on the market a few months earlier than the fastest and newest Tegra 3- powered Android tablets launched in the past two months. Still, none of the latest 10-inch tablets are so light and thin and so elegant.

The filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson once wrote, "Everyone's born with one special thing." The Excite 10 LE has that one special thing. Its light and slim build stand out from the crowd of similar $450 tablets. But that isn't enough to overcome the competition. The Asus Transformer TF300 (Best Deal: $399.99 at P.C. Richard & Son) costs only $379, is just a wee bit thicker, and is much better for gaming thanks to its quad-core processor. The new Apple iPad (4.5 stars), at $499, has a far superior screen and a much broader library of tablet-centric applications. And Toshiba itself has the Excite 10 coming soon, with a quad-core processor in the same body for $500. That gives the Excite 10 LE a pretty slim niche in a crowded Android tablet market.

Although the Toshiba Excite 10 LE offers a sleek, slim design and solid performance, we couldn't look past the highly visible gridlines on the display, slow camera, and $529 price tag. For $30 less, consumers can go home with a 16GB iPad, or the ASUS Transformer Prime with its quad-core Tegra 3 CPU and Nvidia graphics. Overall, the Toshiba Excite 10 LE is simply not worth the premium.

The Toshiba Excite 10 SE is a fine Android tablet, it just lacks the stand-out features or low price that set most top-notch competitors apart. The Asus Transformer Pad TF300 offers the same performance for the same price, but also has the ability to add on an excellent keyboard dock, turning it into a productivity powerhouse. Android enthusiasts will likely be happier spending $50 more for the Nexus 10, while those who don't care either way should check out the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9". The Barnes & Noble Nook HD+$269.00 at OfficeMax could even make a nice alternative with a lower price tag, sharp display, and recent addition of Google Play.
