ASUS laptops have fervently pushed the design envelope in the past two years. After all, AsusTek is widely considered one of the top five ODMs (original design manufacturers) in the world. It makes every laptop component imaginable, including chassis designs for Apple computers, so it's only logical that it would excel in this area. The ASUS U1F ($2,100 street) is the company's latest bid into the ultraportable market. It weighs a svelte 2.7 pounds and rocks LED (light-emitting diode) screen backlighting technology. The U1F is a traveler's delight—that is, if you can live with carrying an external DVD drive. Only a handful of vendors use LED backlights in their laptops.

As a slim and lightweight notebook, Asus has got things right with the U1F, as we found it a great machine to carry around and work on. It may not be the most powerful notebook out there, though and the battery life detracts from the overall usability but if you’re looking for an ultraportable that won’t break the bank, then it’s worth considering.

The lightest Windows Vista laptop we've reviewed, the Asus U1F was a dream to review on the move as it weighs just over 1kg. This ultraportable has lots of appeal: lightest weight, most stylish exterior, six-hour battery life, and a good screen. But sluggish performance and the absence of a built-in optical drive hold it back.

The lightest Windows Vista laptop we've seen, it weighs 2.4 pounds, no heavier than a teacup Chihuahua. The thin case offers a surprisingly full set of connections, including built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless communications. You could use the bright screen to find your way out of a cave, and the battery lasts for more than 6 hours on one charge. These are good qualities for an all-day, on-the-go laptop to possess. But can you type on it?

Asus has definitely proved that it knows how to build an ultra-portable notebook – the U1F is small, light and incredibly stylish. It’s also great seeing a dual core CPU in a machine so small. That said, I think I’d probably still go for the VAIO TX3XP, with it’s integrated DVD writer and nine hour battery life just tipping the scales in Sony’s favour.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 es un chip de video integrado (incorporado) en Mobile Intel 945GM chipset.  Es una versión con frecuencia más rápida del GMA 900.

Muchos juegos son difícilmente ejecutables con estos adaptadores gráficos o se ejecutan de manera muy lenta.

Intel Core Duo: El procesador Double Core con una muy buena relación de rendimiento a consumo de corriente. Los 2 MB L2 Cache son utilizados juntos al doble. La capacidad máxima de 31 watts es únicamente 4 watts mayor que la Pentium M (predecesor). Ambos núcleos (cores) disminuyen la velocidad automáticamente e independientemente el uno del otro por pasos, hasta alcanzar 1GHz. En adición, ahora soporta también instrucciones SSE3.

Después de las primeras comparaciones de rendimiento (benchmarks), el Core Duo completa todas las pruebas por lo menos tan rápido como el equivalente Pentium M. Con aplicaciones, que son diseñadas para multi-procesadores, el rendimiento puede ser casi dos veces mas rápido que con Pentium M (por ejemplo, CineBench, alrededor de un 86% mas rápido).
