Many notebooks calling themselves Ultrabooks have been too large, too heavy or too expensive, but this model from Acer stays true to the vision. Unfortunately, it also matches the rest of the Ultrabook stereotype: it's awfully expensive, connectivity is limited, and there's no scope for upgrading any of the internal components. Acer has overcome some of the Ultrabook specification's constraints, most notably with its use of a breakout dongle for VGA and Ethernet ports. On the other hand, it has compounded some of the platform's problems, for example the liberties taken with the keyboard layout.

Enough about the future, though. The latest Acer Aspire S7 is a hardworking, flexible, and stylish ultrabook with good battery life. That’s not to say that Acer can’t improve there, though. We’d love to see future models improve battery life even futher.

The Acer Aspire S7-392-6411's performance punctuates the system's excellent feature set, thinness, design, build quality, low weight, and general excellence. It is more than a worthy replacement of the Zenbook Prime Touch as our new Editors' Choice for high-end ultrabooks. Sure, you are paying a bit more for the thin chassis and sturdy build materials, but unlike the VAIO Pro 13, the Acer Aspire S7-392-6411 doesn't skimp on battery life in the quest to be the thinnest, lightest laptop around. The Acer Aspire S7-392-6411 therefore gains one of our highest overall scores and Editors' Choice award.

For the most part, Acer’s updated S7 is a triumph of improved design and internals. Battery life is a lot better (although screen brightness is sacrificed), the keyboard’s travel no longer feels as shallow as a reflecting pool, and fan noise is no longer all that noticeable.

Even though the basic design comes from the very first wave of Windows 8 laptops in late 2012, the Acer Aspire S7 still looks and feels cutting-edge. You'll get similar performance and slim bodies from other PC makers, sometimes for a bit less money, but aesthetics and feel count for something, and this is certainly a laptop that stands out from the crowd. At $1,400 it's a bit of a reach; for $1,199, it'd be a killer deal.

With the Aspire S7-392-6411, Acer has shown that it can incorporate reviewer and user feedback. The company improved both the keyboard and the battery life from the first go-round, all while retaining the sleek, sexy chassis we adored in the first version. The 4th generation Intel processor adds a nice boost in performance, and the 1080p touchscreen really pops.
