El alto rendimiento en un equipo portátil siempre esta ligado a un gran costo y esta no fue la excepción, ya que el gran rendimiento desplegado por el ASUS G51J 3D tiene un costo que bordea los USD$1700. De seguro que dentro de nuestros lectores tenemos muchos que no necesitan 7 horas de autonomía y si que requieren de un gran procesador junto con una tarjeta de video acorde para trabajar, por lo que este equipo entra a competir con otros del mismo nivel de precios como el M15x. En cuanto al panel LCD y sus características de retroiluminación, frecuencia de actualización de 120 Hz y por supuesto, el soporte 3D que tiene y el buen despliegue de archivos multimedia con las películas en alta definición, con los juegos y el buen nivel de detalles que es posible lograr y por supuesto con toda la potencia para hacer renderizados para los que necesitan de ello en sus trabajos. Resumiendo un poco, este equipo está diseñado para el trabajo pesado, para jugar y para multimedia, aunque su batería no lo acompañe con un buen nivel de autonomía.

Si eres fanático de la visión 3D, la G51J-1B 3D de ASUS tiene la mejor tecnología pero está limitada en cuanto a los juegos, y es cara al lado de la laptop 3D de Acer.

PROS
Buena funcionalidad 3D para los juegos. Los lentes 3D funcionan y se ajustan bien. Veloz procesador Core i7. Buena tarjeta de gráficos. Teclado con retroiluminación. Cómodos descansos de las palmas. Discos duros duales. Sistema de sonido excepcional.

CONTRAS
La resolución de la pantalla es baja para una laptop para jugar. Los efectos 3D se limitan sólo a los juegos, y salen caros.

Although the technology world's obsession with 3D has waxed and waned over the past few decades, it's now firmly back in fashion. The price tag also seems a little high. When will 3D make up its mind? One year we’re gracing our faces with blue and red cardboard glasses re-announcing the revolution, the next it seems to have died a death. Ultimately the ASUS G51J succeeds in bringing 3D to the gaming masses, but in our humble opinion the content – as is often the case – has yet to catch up with the technology. Until it does the £1699 price tag seems a little steep, considering there is currently more power available for much less.

We've already discussed our thoughts on the UL80Vt and G51J - you can read the details on pages two and three. Both are great laptops, and while we didn't give either the coveted Gold award they are closer than we've come in quite some time. For those that are wondering, anything earning a Bronze Editors' Choice is (at least in my mind) a 90% score; Silver means 93%, and Gold means 95% or higher. Basically, Gold awards are reserved for unequivocal recommendations, and we do have a few minor complaints with both of these laptops, mostly oriented around the LCDs.

The ASUS G51J has a few solid improvements over the older G51VX, most notably the shift from the Intel Q9000 to the Intel Core i7-720QM processor. This change shaved roughly 5 seconds off its wPrime score alone. 3DMark06 performance went up as well, but we didn't see that much of a boost in actual gameplay. PCMark05 is also down, but it is hard to say if it was related to hardware or operating system differences. Overall users who are interested in purchasing this notebook should look at one item; the price. With specifications improving or staying equal, ASUS dropped the price $200, from $1,699 to $1,499. The only items lost were the previously included Eee Stick controllers, which were probably not used many users, if any.

Comentario

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M: La Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M es básicamente una GeForce 9800M GTX con mayor velocidad de reloj en 55nm y basada en el núcleo G92b (por tanto no es comparable a la GTX 260 de escritorio). Comparada con la 9800M GTX, la GTX 260M está fabricada en 55nm y por tanto con mayor velocidad de reloj.

Estas tarjetas también deben ser capaces de aguantar todos los juegos actuales, pero  la mayoría de ellos en configuraciones de detalles medios y bajos y con bajas resoluciones. Juegos más antiguos, o menos exigentes todavía pueden ser jugados con buena calidad de gráficos.

720QM: El Core i7-720QM es el Core i7 Quad Core más lento en 2009 y tiene velocidades entre 1.6 y 2.8 GHz (debido al modo Turbo). Por tanto, combina las ventajas de una CPU de cuatro nucleos lenta con las de un solo nucleo. Comparada con las rápidas CPUs Core i7, el 720QM solo presenta 6MB de cache de nivel 3.
