Este ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17 cuenta con todo un i9 de INTEL acompañado de, nada más y nada menos, una NVIDIA 3070Ti manteniendo un rendimiento térmico excepcional, y una sonoridad más que contenida, algo que no es fácil de conseguir en un equipo portátil y que delata el mimo con el que ASUS implementa los sistemas de refrigeración en sus equipos portátiles de gama alta. A esto hemos de sumarle un panel excepcional en todos los ámbitos, un sistema de sonido más propio de un equipo de sobremesa que de un portátil y una estética que roza el pecado y destila estilo en cada ángulo del equipo. Para rematar, encontramos el detalle estético de la trasera personalizable y la función de la unidad fantasma a la que solo podemos acceder mediante el chip y el puerto Keystone, algo que puede parecer una nimiedad o una "pijadita" pero que nos ha encantado y que ofrece multitud de posibilidades.

Vamos, que podemos darle tranquilamente el premio de producto recomendado, con la seguridad de que tendremos una experiencia gaming muy buena, un rendimiento excepcional y una calidad de imagen y sonido perfecta para escenarios de ocio multimedia. Es un portátil que no se va a quedar obsoleto en muchos años y preparado para los juegos actuales y futuros. Si necesitamos más memoria o más almacenamiento en el futuro, hay margen para ampliaciones. La ausencia que habrá que sustituir con alguna solución alternativa es la de la webcam, que no está. Podemos optar por usar el smartphone como webcam, por ejemplo. O usar una cámara externa como la que ofrece ASUS a modo de opción.

Por lo que respecta al hardware, el ASUS ROG Strix SCAR G17 (2022) representa un importante salto tanto cuantitativo como cualitativo, ya que no se limita a ofrecer una configuración más potente, sino que además incorpora una plataforma de última generación, y el modelo que hemos probado cuenta con el doble de memoria RAM (32 GB), lo que unido a su potente procesador de 14 núcleos y 20 hilos y a la GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, que es compatible con los Studio Drivers de NVIDIA, lo convierten en un equipo que no solo nos permitirá jugar con todas las garantías, sino que también podremos utilizarlo para trabajar. Lamentablemente, no tengo detalles sobre el precio de venta de este equipo, así que no puedo realizar una valoración en este sentido. Si ASUS nos facilita el precio de venta oficial en España, actualizaremos el análisis y la puntuación acorde a las conclusiones que saquemos.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 is an immensely powerful laptop. Its CPU delivers the same kind of processing ability as a high-end workstation from just a few years ago. The graphics are also immensely capable, albeit aimed at gaming rather than professional work. There’s ample connectivity including the latest Thunderbolt 4 and 2.5Gbits/sec networking, plus some Type A USB for backwards compatibility. The screen is excellent, with its high refresh able to take full advantage of the powerful graphics’ fast framerates, although this will be more for gamers than professionals. The battery life isn’t great, and it is quite large and heavy, but these are expected downsides from a notebook this potent. Overall, the Scar 17 showcases just how much computing ability can now be packed into a portable device.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 packs potent gaming power that will allow you to play triple-A titles, and enjoy an excellent audio experience. Our review unit was reasonably priced ($2,499) for a gaming rig with a QHD 240Hz display, a 12th Gen Intel Core i9 CPU, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPU, and 1TB of Storage. You can easily spend upwards of $3,000 for a gaming laptop with these specs. The Scar also gets cooling right, with a setup that actually works and remains relatively quiet, however, the extra thought put into the thermal design is probably why the unit is a little thicker than others. If you go for a thinner, smaller profile gaming rig you most likely won’t enjoy the same cooling efficiency. What the Scar gets right, it gets exceptionally right and unless you really miss a built-in webcam (you shouldn’t, they’re terrible), the Scar is an excellent and fun choice that will meet all your gaming requirements.

It’s practically a given that any powerful gaming laptop will have not-so-great battery life. And unfortunately, that’s the case here. Its 90Wh battery can last about three and a half hours under normal use, which I define as running a dozen or so browser tabs, music streaming, and a chat app like Slack. On the brighter side, you can recharge this year’s Strix Scar 17 via USB-C — up to 100W with a USB-C PD charger. Previous versions of this laptop all but required you to tote around its large and hefty 280W power brick. So long as you don’t plan on gaming on the go, USB-C recharging is a viable option. Asus’s Strix Scar 17 proves that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get access to a fast Intel Alder Lake processor or Nvidia’s 3070 Ti mobile graphics card. And for this model’s $2,499 price, it delivers a lot of other great things, like its tactile keyboard, sharp QHD display, booming speakers, and above-average port selection. Though, you’ll find many of its best qualities in some of Asus’ other high-end gaming laptops that offer better designs.

If you got extra money to burn for the best out of the best, sure go ahead, otherwise, I would strongly suggest you get the RTX 3070 Ti variant because it is value for the money. With the RTX 3070 Ti running at 150W max TGP, you are not sacrificing a lot on the performance yet are capable of utilising the most out of the chip. All in all, ASUS has done all the right decisions with the design of the 2022 ROG Strix SCAR 17. I can easily recommend this to anyone looking for a powerful 17-inch gaming laptop. The cooling has been improved significantly from the last year’s model whereby the CPU and GPU are well balanced despite they pushed the GPU to the 150W range.

Note that I said “compact” and not “portable.” That’s because it weighs a whopping 2.9kg, and its somewhat limited battery life also means you will more often than not have to bring the charger around with you. But this is a desktop replacement laptop, and they aren’t meant to be carried around town as you run your errands. For that, look towards the ROG Zephyrus series. And while I really enjoyed my time with the ROG Strix SCAR 17, I won’t recommend it for everyone, but this is not meant to be an all-rounder anyway. The ROG Strix SCAR 17 (2022) is an unapologetic gaming beast with the performance and styling to match, and I love it for that.
