The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is close to being the perfect convertible 2-in-1 laptop. It's got a premium design, flaunts Intel's new Ice Lake chip which is capable of casual gaming and has an absolutely gorgeous display. Dell's determination to convert to the new USB-C ports may frustrate those who don't want to use adaptors to hook up old peripherals and it's unfortunate how much the 4K panel saps the battery, but otherwise it's difficult to find much wrong with this superb portable.

With the new XPS 13 2-in-1, Dell finally has a convertible that's just as great as its XPS 13 laptop. Just make sure you get all the components you need up front.

There’s a lot to unwind on Dell’s new XPS 13 2-in-1. The first is the performance front. Yes, you can argue (and we’d tend to agree) that performance in an ultraportable laptop is secondary—but it’s also something worth rating. You are, after all, paying extra money for that Core i7 over a Pentium for a reason, right?

Thanks to all that new tech, Dell's latest represents a substantial shift in the age-old performance/mobility trade-off. The CPU performance gains over Whiskey Lake-based 8th generation Intel processors are significant and meaningful. However, pairing those gains with significantly enhanced efficiency is downright impressive. Add to that a near-doubling of performance in graphical tasks, and there's a ton to love about the new Dell XPS 13 7390. This is the first time in quite a while that you can get more of both without taking a second mortgage out on your home. On top of that, this system is a real looker and very lightweight while being durable and versatile. If you've been hanging onto an older business-class notebook, it's time to consider and upgrade. To sum up this laptop's performance with Intel 10th Gen Core CPUs we'll borrow a line from Seinfeld: they're here and they're spectacular.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is possibly the best 13-inch convertible on the market, hands down. It solves some major pain points of previous generations, mainly having to do with performance. Of course, the webcam finally being above the display instead of beneath it is a big plus. My two biggest complaints are that it doesn't ship with the pen, and that there's no IR camera. For the pen, it's a real shame that a premium PC like this doesn't come with it. I'd expect that kind of cost-cutting from an Inspiron, but not an XPS. Of course, Microsoft sells the pen separately on Surface PCs too, so I guess this is acceptable. The bit about the IR camera isn't a big deal to me. It has a fingerprint sensor, and frankly, I'm only logging into the PC once per session.

Dell’s XPS 13 2-in-1 is more than a companion to the excellent XPS 13 -- in many ways, it’s the sequel. It’s incredibly thin, impeccably designed and powerful enough to go toe-to-toe with any ultraportable. The fact that it can twist into a few different positions is a nice bonus.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 delivers everything a cutting-edge ultraportable laptop should: excellent design and build quality, proficient computing performance, and long battery life. Its minor keyboard and fingerprint reader flaws keep it from earning the outstanding five-star rating that its clamshell XPS 13 sibling did, but it's nevertheless clearly the best convertible 2-in-1 laptop you can buy right now.

With a stunning display, long battery life and zippy Ice Lake performance packed into a gorgeous and portable chassis, the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is at the top of the convertible class. However, its MacBook-like keyboard might be too shallow for some, and its limited port selection might force you to live the dongle life. If you want a more comfortable keyboard, louder speakers and an included stylus, the HP Spectre x360 ($1,049 starting) is a solid alternative. But if a great design, a movie-worthy display and top performance are your priorities, the XPS 13 2-in-1 delivers big.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 is a monster in a small package. Its slim design is jampacked with powerful performance, a superbright 16:10 display and an excellent battery life. Unfortunately, you might find it difficult to get used to the shallow keyboard and the less-than-desirable number of ports. If you're looking for a laptop with a better keyboard and more ports, than the Razer Blade Stealth is perfect for you. For $1,599, you'll also get strong graphics performance and better audio than on the Dell. However, the XPS 13 is not only one of the best 2-in-1 laptops around, but also one of the best laptops currently available.

The XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 will be available in black with carbon fibre or silver with woven fibreglass, and we really liked the quality of the material that we were able to spend hands-on time with. The body is made out of a single block of aluminium. The design also features narrow screen borders with a webcam still embedded above the screen, which is something that many of Dell's competitors have not managed to achieve. There are two Thunderbolt 3 ports and built-in Wi-Fi 6 as well as a microSD card slot and 3.5mm audio socket.

If you were a fan of the previous XPS 13 models then you're bound to like this new version too. It's a real eye-catcher and sports a fairly impressive spec, a promising battery life and much more besides.

Perhaps the best feature is the sensible positioning of the camera. Like with the new Dell XPS 13 laptops, Dell has come to its senses and moved the webcam to the north side of the display, meaning whoever you’re videocalling won’t be staring at your chin the whole time – previously, Dell had mounted cameras under the south bezel, which allowed for rather unflattering views of your face. Despite this move, the bezel here is very thin – you’d be hard pressed to spot the camera sensor at a glance. I barely even noticed it was there initially.

We won't know just how well the new 10nm Intel chips perform until we get the XPS 13 2-in-1 into the office for a proper review, but on paper this looks like a very capable machine. Strong specs combined with the best of Dell's already strong XPS design language mean that not only does this look like a good convertible, it might even dethrone its clamshell cousin from the top of the laptop world.

Based on some brief time with the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 – ogling its larger and sharper display and tapping away on its improved MagLev keyboard – we’ve come away hugely impressed and optimistic for Dell’s latest.
