AMD es una alternativa más que válida para equipos portátiles. En el segmento de los equipos de 15 – 28W su comportamiento es noble, predecible y con un elevado rendimiento que aprovecha los Vatios de un modo muy eficiente. En los “H” también. Intel juega con los límites de potencia para sacar el máximo partido a su arquitectura, y cuando los límites de potencia están limitados por la termodinámica, como sucede con los portátiles, quedan a la vista los problemas heredados de una arquitectura con seis años de antigüedad. De momento, Zen 2 y Zen 3 son arquitecturas que están demostrando ser válidas tanto para escritorio como para portátiles y Microsoft ha hecho un trabajo muy bueno “tuneando” un Ryzen 7 4000 para convertirlo casi en un Ryzen 5000 aumentando las velocidades de reloj para adaptarlas a las posibilidades termodinámicas de los Surface Laptop 4.

El Microsoft Surface Laptop en su versión de 15 pulgadas tiene un precio de partida de 1.450 euros, que puede subir hasta los 2.700 euros en caso de que te vayas a la configuración más potente de la que dispone Microsoft (32 GB de memoria RAM y 1 TB de espacio interno). Por otro lado, tiene buena autonomía con una carga rápida que es una delicia, una experiencia de tecleo agradable y es fácil de transportar gracias a su peso de 1,5 kilos, además de una pantalla a la altura. En definitiva, si el aspecto es tu principal objetivo y tienes dinero para invertir, este es un portátil que te va a llamar la atención desde el primer vistazo. Si quieres algo más práctico y funcional, te recomiendo mirar otras alternativas con características más ajustadas al precio.

Las mejoras en el hardware que Microsoft aplica año a año, aunque bienvenidas, no justifican el cambio de nombre ya que, de hecho, podríamos encontrarnos fácilmente con un Surface Laptop 3 al que simplemente han actualizado el hardware y nadie notaría la diferencia.

All in all, the Surface Laptop 4 is a decent device for work purposes. It has a large screen despite being lightweight, and Microsoft has pre-installed some programs inside. If we could improve the Surface Laptop 4, we would add more I/O ports and perhaps shrink the bezels around the display a bit more. Ultimately, the Surface Laptop 4 feels like a missed opportunity. I have no qualms with Microsoft leaving most of the notebook unchanged but their decision to use last year’s AMD processors is puzzling. And even if you take into account the model that uses Intel’s latest Tiger Lake processor, Microsoft’s refusal to update the USB-C port with Thunderbolt support makes it the only S$2,000 ultraportable notebook that I know of that only comes with a standard USB-C port. There’s no shortage of smaller more compact notebooks that are just as, if not faster. And if you really need a notebook with a larger display, LG’s gram 16 looks like the better option. It weighs a lot less, has a slightly larger display, better ports (with Thunderbolt support), and it even costs less. Back to the drawing board, Microsoft.
