Me queda claro que en la propuesta más potente de Huawei este año no han echado los restos. Una ficha técnica más propia de 2021 y un procesamiento fotográfico que entorpece en lugar de solucionar son un claro paso atrás. Aunque lo menos entendible de todo esto es la estrategia de precios. Este Huawei P50 Pro se ha puesto a la venta por 1.200 euros cuando hay fichas técnicas parecidas en cuanto a potencia, sumándole la velocidad 5G, por poco más de la mitad. Es ahí donde entraba en juego el apartado fotográfico. Ya que no tienes un móvil Android completo, quizá tener una de las mejores cámaras del mercado hubiera ayudado. No es que sea mala su fotografía, pero no es un salto hacia adelante propiamente dicho en cuanto a resultados. Mantiene versatilidad y gana en detalles como la representación de colores. Pero todo esto nos lleva a la ya clásica pregunta: ¿merece la pena un móvil Huawei sin aplicaciones Google? ¿Estás dispuesto a dar el salto? En este caso la respuesta solo la puedes dar tú.

Hemos disfrutado mucho la experiencia con el Huawei P50 Pro porque, viniendo del Huawei Mate 40 Pro, logramos ajustar nuestro uso a los requerimientos que implican las limitaciones. Es cierto que se puede suplir en gran medida los encontronazos de software, incluso hasta no alejarse demasiado de un Android con Google Play. Aun así, no es de recibo que el usuario deba pelearse con su teléfono para equiparar la experiencia, más en uno que vale 1.199 euros. Por más que esto no sea culpa de Huawei, obviamente. El Huawei P50 Pro es una maravilla de cámara, es perfecto para disfrutar del contenido multimedia y supone una muestra de todo lo que se ha esforzado Huawei a la hora de desarrollar software propio con el que escalar la montaña de dificultades que se le ha presentado. EMUI 12 no es mala apuesta. Lástima que no sea suficiente.

En el interior es donde empezamos a ver el precio que Huawei tiene que pagar si quiere sacar móviles. Celebro la elección del Snapdragon 888 como SoC, ya que es potente y puede con lo que le echemos. Sin embargo, es una versión recortada sin 5G. Esto me da igual en móviles más baratos, ya que no exijo que tengan 5G, pero en un tope de gama, creo que es obligatorio a estas alturas. Además, y esto ya lo sabías de sobra antes de entrar a leer, no tenemos los servicios de Google. Si esto no es un problema para ti o ya veías de un Huawei, te vas a encontrar un móvil espectacular que, por encima de todo, brilla por la calidad de sus cámaras. El sensor principal me ha enamorado completamente y el telefoto con ese 10x híbrido es una maravilla. Es un móvil digno de formar parte de la familia P de Huawei, pero, como digo, llega tarde, un año tarde, y eso significa que, por ejemplo, el procesador ya no es el más potente que pueden montar en un tope de gama y también llega sin el esperado HarmonyOS para móviles.

All in all, the Huawei P50 Pro is a great phone with a lot going for it. The screen is stunning, it’s powerful and it has a good battery life. Not to mention the camera which is the focal point of this handset and manages to produce some really incredible shots. But, and it is a very big but, the Huawei P50 Pro is lacking in some very significant ways which really lets it down and makes it much more difficult to recommend. Pretty much every other recent flagship phone in 2022 has up to date connectivity, so you’re bound to feel hard done by paying such an eye-watering amount of money on a device that doesn’t have 5G support. While that will be off-putting, for the majority of people, it’ll be the lack of Google apps that would stop them splashing out on this. If you tend to to avoid the global tech giant anyway then it won’t be a problem, and well done you, but it’s hard to avoid in Europe. We all use Google in one way or another, whether that’s for email, cloud storage or smart home control.

You can, of course, find fault with the processor, which in 2022 is no longer at the cutting edge of technology and likes to heat up, but the phone appeared in Europe with a six-month delay.

Huawei remains an industry leader when it comes to imaging hardware and software, and the P50 Pro leaves little doubt as to that. If you’re exclusively after one of the best camera phones around, the P50 Pro is certainly up there as a contender. Much of the phone’s other hardware is decent too, provided you can overlook the slightly older processor, middling battery life, and lack of 5G networking. Unfortunately, hardware alone does not make for a best-in-class smartphone experience. EMUI 12 has more than its share of flaws. The lack of Google’s ecosystem and an old version of Android will still be an issue for most but the problems have extended to Huawei’s own apps and ecosystem too. As such, it’s a very difficult phone to recommend. Huawei’s smartphone business is clearly in a tough spot, with both software and chipset hardware clearly not where the company or its customers would like it to be. I would be prepared to cut the phone some slack on the 5G downgrade, which you might be able to overlook in exchange for the excellent camera.

Huawei is yet again in a pretty tough spot, and I’m not sure what the company can really do to overcome the hurdles that it faces in software. This is the first Huawei phone I’ve ever been able to use as an actual daily driver since the sanctions, and while it was doable, it’s not convenient. If you don’t use a lot of Google services or even want to move away from Google then the Huawei P50 Pro might even be a convenient purchase, but otherwise, it’s hard to recommend this device. The Huawei P50 Pro is a fantastic smartphone in its own right, and with Google services, I could only imagine it being one of the top phones of 2022. In its current state though, I’m not really in a position to recommend it to basically anyone. I can’t use it long-term as a daily driver for the reasons that I’ve already stated, and if you’re in any way like me — a western-based user who makes use of a ton of Google apps — then you’re likely going to be in the same boat. Having said all of that, I truly believe that this is the best phone the company has ever released since sanctions were imposed.

We've just started our review process, but it seems that the Huawei P50 Pro is just like every other P flagship so far - well-executed, with an excellent screen, performance, battery, but most importantly - a multi-camera setup that offers a lot of creative freedom to creators.

The camera setup combines a large-sensor primary camera with a 13 mm ultra-wide, a 90 mm tele, a monochrome sensor, and a multispectral color temperature sensor for optimizing white balance and color rendering. It also revives the concept of using a monochrome sensor alongside the primary sensor, something last seen in the P20 Pro from 2018.
