The MSI Stealth 15M is proof that gaming laptops with 15 W to 28 W Tiger Lake Core U CPUs can work

Las CPU ULV de Intel mejoran cada año, aunque sus diferencias de rendimiento puedan ser marginales. Sin embargo, esas pequeñas ganancias se acercan a los niveles de rendimiento del Core H, donde creemos que las CPUs Core U pueden tener un lugar en los portátiles para juegos de nivel básico y medio.

La gran mayoría de los portátiles para juegos del mercado en este momento vienen con CPUs de la serie Core H de 35 W a 45 W y opciones de gráficos GeForce GTX o RTX. Aparte de un pequeño puñado de excepciones, la mayoría de fabricantes no ofrecen opciones Core U en ninguno de sus portátiles de juego, ya que el rendimiento más lento de la CPU puede suponer un cuello de botella para los gráficos de alto rendimiento. Sin embargo, el reciente MSI Stealth 15M es el mejor ejemplo que hemos visto hasta ahora de una CPU Core U que funciona muy bien con una GPU GeForce RTX.

Como se detalla en nuestro análisis, el sistema MSI viene con una CPU ULV Intel 11th gen Core i7-1185G7 que es uno de los procesadores más rápidos disponibles en la familia Tiger Lake-U. El rendimiento multihilo en bruto es entre un 3 y un 15 por ciento más lento que el Core i7-9750H, mientras que el rendimiento de un solo hilo puede ser hasta un 20 o un 30 por ciento más rápido. El Core i7-9750H alimentó la mayoría de los portátiles para juegos de 2019 y el Core i7-1185G7 ya está a la par en rendimiento bruto mientras consume aproximadamente la mitad de energía.

Al ejecutar juegos reales, el Stealth 15M y su GPU GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q rinden solo unos puntos porcentuales menos que el portátil medio GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, aunque la mayoría de estos sistemas de la competencia vienen con CPUs Core H más exigentes. No estamos diciendo que todos los portátiles de juego con GPU GeForce RTX 3070 o 3080 deban venir con CPU Core U, pero el déficit de rendimiento entre los portátiles de juego Core H y los posibles portátiles de juego Core U parece ser menor de lo esperado. Nuestra experiencia con el último NUC de Intel equipado con la misma CPU Core i7-1185G7 pero con una GPU GeForce RTX 3080 aún más potente es una prueba más de que la mayoría de los juegos están mucho más ligados a la GPU que a la CPU, hasta el punto de que la última CPU Core U puede funcionar casi tan bien en muchos casos.
