EN→ESAt Rs 1,14,990, the ROG Xbox Ally X costs more than a literal Xbox. That price is shocking no matter how you frame it, but within the niche market of premium gaming handhelds, similar devices with comparable specs hover around the same price point or higher. Now, some may think (or they may not), I’m just making a hypothetical scenario here that you can technically use them for browsing, document editing, or watching movies. Well, technically you can, but you can’t.After living with the Ally X and spending time with other handhelds, I’ve learned that these devices are singularly focused: they’re for gaming, not Windows productivity. The experience is clunky compared even to a Windows tablet let alone a laptop.

EN→ESMicrosoft's powerful handhelds continue to slightly baffle. They're accomplished in some regards, but their pricing means they're almost guaranteed to be niche in terms of overall sales – and the Xbox Ally X epitomises that. It's a great bit of kit if you can afford it – the best ROG Ally out there now, in fact, and up there as one of the best Windows handhelds ever on paper. However, it's also undeniably pricey – and used prices for the Asus ROG Ally X, for example, make that a hard sell. I think this Xbox machine is better than the standard Xbox Ally, since it's going to age more gracefully thanks to its more powerful chip, but I also don't know how many people want to spend that money right now. Especially without an OLED display upgrade.

EN→ESWe’ve at least mentioned ‘price’ in the above section twice, and there’s a reason for it – ASUS is asking for a whopping RM4,299 for one of these ROG Xbox Ally X handhelds, which is very pricey when you compare to the likes of Steam Deck and such. It’s starting to step into proper laptop territory, so those without particularly deep pockets will have to think twice about committing this much money for a gaming handheld, which is essentially just a downsized PC with an Xbox controller fused next to it. If you do have the ability to make this monetary commitment though, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X currently offers an experience that very few models in the market can match today. Excellent ergonomics, special software, great performance, and overall just a plain well-built machine, making this one of the forerunners under Microsoft’s new vision of a quintessential “Xbox” that you can throw in your bag instead of sitting under your home TV.

EN→ESThe Asus ROG Xbox Ally X tries to bring the best of Windows to a gaming handheld. The company made a full attempt to attract gamers with its long list of features. The design is ergonomic and comfortable to hold, thanks to the new Xbox controller-inspired aesthetic. The performance of the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is impressive for a gaming handheld, while Microsoft's Xbox Full Screen Experience represents a meaningful step forward for Windows handhelds, although it still has a long way to go. The Xbox integration still needs better optimisation, while adding an OLED option would have further sweetened the deal. The display is doable, and a 120Hz screen refresh rate does make a difference while scrolling through the user interface or playing games.

It's a phone made for people who want a smooth multimedia experience, a camera that performs well in bright light, and a brand that promises more than 2 years of OS support —something most other phone makers don't offer. However, its dated processor and modest low-light camera output limit its appeal for those seeking raw performance. EN→ESWhen the first ROG Ally arrived in Australia, the more affordable Steam Deck wasn’t yet out locally. Now that Valve’s device is available here, seeing a device cost nearly double the OLED Steam Deck variant raises an eyebrow. For that $1,599 price tag, the ROG Xbox Ally X does outperform cheaper devices. It plays PC games, new and old, well. Xbox’s controller grips are much more comfortable to use, even with the device’s still-heavy frame. There’s still no escaping the spectre of Windows 11, though. Not yet, at least. Despite some good attempts to streamline the user experience for handheld gaming, the Windows OS still frustrates, albeit less frequently. But for those with patience, a penchant for customisation, and the pennies to match, the ROG Xbox Ally X is a more powerful and more versatile gaming handheld than other iterations.

EN→ESTwo companies worked on the console: ASUS and Microsoft. ASUS did an excellent job with its task, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X hardware turned out to be an excellent portable console. We have high performance for AAA games, effective cooling, an extremely comfortable design, sticks and triggers with Hall sensors, additional separate vibration motors, a high-quality display, good sound and excellent battery life in its class. But Microsoft's attempt to turn Windows 11 into an OS for portable consoles has not yet met expectations. There are a lot of glitches, bugs, freezes, unfinished parts and questions about the interface, behind which it has not yet been possible to completely disguise the same Windows 11 under the Xbox logo. There is hope that with updates everything will get better.

EN→ESThe ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is one of the most ambitious handhelds ever built: premium, powerful, and polished, yet self-aware enough to fully embrace its PC DNA. It’s not trying to replace your console or your desktop; it’s trying to be a bit of both. And honestly, it pulls that off better than most would expect. Could it use an OLED? Absolutely. Is the Xbox integration still a little rough around the edges? Definitely. Is it expensive? Yeppers. But the mix of comfort, performance, thermals, and flexibility it offers is second to none. Just don’t look at it as a console or laptop substitute, as that’d be missing the point. Like an iPad, it carves out its own niche: a capable, delightfully overpowered sidekick that fits perfectly into your gaming ecosystem.

EN→ESOur conclusion? This new Xbox interface really doesn't change anything about our recommendations for gaming handhelds. If you're already comfortable with using Windows 11 on a handheld, this is still Windows 11 on a handheld. If you're not comfortable with that, stick to SteamOS, which is more user-friendly albeit less compatible. As a product the ROG Xbox Ally X in particular offers the kind of phenomenal performance and all-day battery life that you'd expect of a $1,000 device. Ultimately, the new Xbox Experience really doesn't make a huge difference either way (nor does it hurt anything).

EN→ESAs I began writing my review of the ROG Xbox Ally X, I went to my closet and pulled out my Game Boy, Switch, PlayStation Vita, and PSP Go, placing them next to me. Each of these handheld consoles belongs to a different era in gaming, and each brought with it new experiences. I have lived through all of those eras, but one thing was always missing: a handheld console made by Microsoft. I still scratch my head and wonder why. Microsoft has created some of the strongest IPs in the gaming industry, like Halo and Gears of War, and they have always deserved to be experienced on a handheld device. I am sure many others have asked the same question. Little did we know that Redmond might have been quietly planning its foray into the handheld space.

EN→ESThe ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is not just an update; it’s a redemption. It takes the promising but flawed concept of the original Ally and refines it into the handheld PC gaming device that users wanted all along. By directly addressing the biggest pain points (most notably the battery life), and layering on meaningful hardware and software improvements, ASUS and Microsoft have crafted what is the most powerful and versatile handheld on the market today. This is a machine that feels less like a first-generation experiment and more like a mature, confident, and incredibly capable product. It is a superb piece of engineering that delivers a true, no-compromise PC gaming experience in the palm of your hands. Ally X launches at a starting price of $999 in the U.S. – significantly higher than most competing devices. It’s a powerful computer in a compact chassis, and the premium is aimed squarely at enthusiasts.

EN→ESAsus has teamed up with Microsoft for something quite different this time. The new ROG Xbox Ally series takes the company’s handheld gaming concept and gives it a console-first twist. I’ve been using the standard model for about a week, powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2 A chip with 512GB storage and 16GB RAM. What truly sets it apart from the original ROG Ally isn’t the hardware, but the Xbox console interface running over Windows 11. At the India launch event, Asus described it as “an Xbox made by ROG.” Having spent time with both the Xbox Series S and the first-generation Ally, I’m curious to see how true that claim really is. EN→ESI live in a paradoxical mind. On the one hand, I sit on my lawn chair saying gaming handhelds have gotten too damn expensive. But on the other hand, I can’t lie — this is the best PC gaming handheld I’ve ever used, and I’d feel OK dropping $999 on it. Impressive performance paired with a giant battery and power efficiency — all deeply rooted in a stripped down Windows 11 with a slick Xbox UI to navigate and a All I’d say is just think about the library you have and the ways you play. EN→ESWhen the ROG Ally first debuted two years ago, it was a promising PC gaming handheld console. The idea of playing PC games anywhere and anytime is great, but it was met with two major flaws: The battery life and an unoptimised Windows 11 user interface for handheld (also not forgetting the microSD card issue). Over time, ASUS ROG improved the battery life with the Ally X, but the UI is still very Windows-ish. The newest successor, called the ROG Xbox Ally series (instead of the ROG Ally 2), has finally arrived. Although I only had a week of playing the Xbox Ally X, I can safely say that ASUS ROG has finally brought its 'A' game. EN→ESAnd finally – should you buy the ROG Xbox Ally X? Actually, I’d say yes. I really like this device a lot. The new grips are so much more comfortable than before and ROG is going for function over form. Powered by the new AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, the performance is stellar for a handheld device like this yet it offers more performance per watt while being cooler and the fans are much quieter than before too. As for the price, which is a huge point of contention, it is at $999.99 USD. However, for us here in Malaysia, it’s actually the same price as the ROG Ally X that was launched last year, at RM4,299. So, is it expensive? I’d say not really. We can still do everything that we want to do on a laptop since it’s essentially a laptop in the form of a controller with a screen in the middle. We can still convert it back to a laptop by plugging in a dongle, or get the ROG Bulwark Dock and use it that way too.

I took it everywhere I went for the last couple of days, and it’s the first handheld I genuinely considered buying for myself. Until I saw the price tag, that is. At a whopping $999, the console is anything but cheap. And that price tag carries certain expectations. One of those expectations would be the inclusion of a proper carry case. However, if you want one, be prepared to spend an additional $70, bringing the total price to almost $1.100. At that price, you can also get a very solid gaming laptop equipped with a dedicated graphics card and a high-end processor. But if you do have the money to spend on a handheld console, and the handheld form factor appeals to you, there is nothing wrong with choosing the ROG Xbox Ally X.

It’s still not the easiest handheld to live with, but it’s the one that makes the Windows handheld dream feel believable to me – powerful, portable, and finally, practical. But let’s be honest: not everyone needs a handheld like this. The Xbox Ally X isn’t aiming to replace your Switch 2 or your console at home. EN→ESThe ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X lands on shelves on Thursday 16th October for R18 999. Given that the ASUS ROG Ally X retails for R17 999 and features a Z1 Extreme CPU (no AI) the R1 000 extra is arguably worth it for the arguably marginal performance bump of the newer chipset. The textured grips are really nice, as is the jet black colourway that is exclusive to the X iteration of the Xbox Ally. The hardware is great, the performance is what we’d expect from a handheld PC and frankly ASUS has done a bang-up job with its own software. But Microsoft lets the team down on this project. EN→ESDespite its Xbox branding and more approachable design, the ROG Xbox Ally X doesn't quite do enough to attract a wider audience than any handheld gaming PC before it. That's not to say that was even an achievable goal for Asus and Xbox, but for as exciting as this device can be in ideal circumstances, its software continues to hold it back. The Xbox full screen experience is a significant step in the right direction, but Windows 11 just doesn't run smoothly on a portable touchscreen device. Certainly not this one – not yet, anyway. Of course, anyone willing to ignore or circumvent those inherent problems will be rewarded with an extraordinarily powerful gaming rig. If you were considering that device, you don't mind (or prefer) the extra handgrips, and you have the extra $200, then this is the one to go for. It's pretty much that simple. Of course, that's a lot of conditionals. Plainly speaking, the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme doesn't particularly impress versus its predecessor. As we said earlier in the review, if you were hoping for a big performance uplift due to the 33% larger GPU, well it's just not there. The power packed into this portable gamer is pretty impressive. Even on the basic Silent mode, you can happily play Diablo 4 on Ultra graphics settings, while the likes of Tony Hawk also runs well. Even better is the battery life, which ranks among the best of any handheld gaming console I've tested in 2025. The Xbox ROG Ally X supplies three to four hours of non-stop game action on one charge, even on Performance and 25w Ultra modes. That's better than I experienced on the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 (when playing AAA games). And while you don't have an OLED panel, games still look great on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X.

EN→ESPortability has become increasingly important in recent times. The sales success of the Nintendo Switch meant both Microsoft and Sony rushed to develop their own. The PlayStation Portal was Sonys version. We all eagerly anticipated the Xbox one, especially as rumours were that it would be a full on handheld. The reveal back in June certainly gave us pause. Not so much a portable Xbox, instead it was more akin to a Steamdeck. A portable PC. Being produced by ASUS Republic of Gamers brand had us fearing for our wallets. Whilst it is hardly priced at the everyman there is so much flexibility and quality hardware in the ROG Xbox Ally that if you want what it offers, nothing else comes close. We worried when we first saw it that it was going to be locked to the Xbox infrastructure.

EN→ESIt’s also worth mentioning that Asus sells a $149 product called the Bulwark Dock, which lets you plug in a variety of devices, including the Xbox Ally X, to monitors, TVs and other peripherals. With 7-in-1 connectivity, you can plug in laptops, phones and other handhelds. It’s also got a stand for your device and an anti-slip rubber base. I tried it with the Ally X and it worked well, if not entirely suited for my personal setup. (I don’t yet have a proper desk and primarily use an already full entertainment stand.) Really, it’s a pretty solid investment if you’re someone who games with any portable device, even if you don’t end up going with the Ally X.

EN→ESWhile the ROG Xbox Ally X lays the groundwork for a bright Windows 11 gaming handheld future, it makes me wonder where Xbox is headed. Is this the precursor to a Microsoft-made handheld that's actually just the next Xbox? Is the Xbox layer over Windows 11 the start of the Xbox-PC merger that's been rumored for years? It's still unclear, but the release of the Xbox Ally X feels like the start of a new direction for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. At launch, the Xbox Ally X experience is far from perfect, making its $1,000 USD ($1,300 CAD) price tag difficult to justify. There are just too many features that lack refinement, like the disconnect between the new Xbox menu and Armoury Crate, the fact that some third-party games don't appear in your Xbox library (EA's app, I'm looking at you), and that updates need to be downloaded through several different apps, both in Xbox and desktop mode.

We're not entirely sure what makes the new Asus handheld an Xbox, but here we are. Thanks Microsoft. At least we finally get Windows Handheld mode and the X model - while expensive - is priced relatively competitively.

EN→ESThese are incredibly strong handhelds handhelds, but that price stings. Of course, the base model Ally is less potent, but it can still do the job with a little tweaking. But the Ally X really comes in heavy with performance from that Z2 Extreme, which is unlocked by removing the background burdens of Windows 11. And of course, there will be curation of the games tested by Xbox itself to ensure handheld compatibility too. It’s clear that Microsoft and Asus have thought of everything heading into the launch, and while it’s way too early to definitively confirm their greatness (that will come with a full review), they left a good first impression.

Jason goes hands-on with the ROG Xbox Ally X and the ROG Xbox Ally to see how ASUS and Microsoft are trying to redefine handheld gaming. Could this be the best handheld gaming console yet? Jason compares the ROG Ally X vs. ROG Xbox Ally X, breaks down what’s new with the UI, and shows you how it might stack up against the Steam Deck and other portable gaming PCs.

EN→ESThe Asus ROG Xbox Ally X just entered the chat as the serious contender for gaming handheld of the year. It’s not only the first Xbox handheld, but it’s the first gaming handheld that doesn’t feel or perform like a cumbersome PC. This is the first Xbox handheld that comes running a streamlined version of Windows 11 with fewer background processes. Its unique Xbox UI also almost completely eliminates having to deal with the desktop experience with frustratingly tiny touchscreen icons. Performance on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X is higher and more efficient thanks to the new AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor inside. I was able to run Hogwarts Legacy at a high-quality setting and still have a smooth frame rate.

EN→ESTechnically, as this is running Windows 11 Home underneath, it is possible to use the device as its own PC – there are enough ports for connecting things such as a mouse and keyboard, or hooking it up to an external display with the Thunderbolt-capable USB-C ports on top. With this, you could also install another OS, such as Bazzite, although by doing so, you’d lose out on all the Xbox-first software stuff that this handheld is arguably built around.
