I can’t recommend the iPhone 16e. I usually argue that every phone suits a particular audience, but in this case, I wouldn’t advise buying it. Market context is crucial. This iPhone lacks MagSafe, an ultra-wideband chip, Wi-Fi 7, high maximum brightness, a Dynamic Island, the latest Ceramic Shield, an ultra-wide camera, and current photography styles—despite having hardware capable of supporting them. I’d recommend an iPhone 15 Pro instead. It’s available on Amazon for $700. Even the iPhone 16, often found for around $700, is a much better choice. I won’t compare Android options at this price, as that’s another discussion. Is it a bad phone? No. Does it have a place in the 2025 market? Not really. Its screen and single-camera setup fall short, with the processor as its only standout feature.

The iPhone 16e is a very different proposition to Apple’s SE phones of old. This is a phone that delivers most of the iPhone 16 ownership experience, particularly where picture and sound quality are concerned, for a healthy chunk of change less. If you’re more than just a point-and-shoot photographer or you regularly watch movies in very bright sunlight, the iPhone 16 or 16 Pro are worth the extra outlay, but for most people, the iPhone 16e feels like all the phone they will need.

The resulting images have natural colors, accurate exposure, plenty of detail (when there’s enough light), and solid dynamic range. Zooming maxes out at 10x (6x for video) and is fine up to about 4-5x for photos, but quality drops rapidly beyond this. iPhones always excel at video recording, and so does the iPhone 16e. Here again, it doesn’t perform as well as the iPhone 16 or 16 Pro, but it still beats the vast majority of Android phones.

With the iPhone 16E, Apple has ushered its most affordable iPhone into a new era. Where the old iPhone SEs were compromised devices, the iPhone 16E offers a more thoughtful and modern blend of performance and features – though this all comes with a higher price tag. But to the iPhone 16E’s credit, it has just about everything most people need, and if you have an older iPhone and want to upgrade to a modern iPhone at the lowest possible price, it is not a bad option at all.

It’s really tough to fully recommend the iPhone 16e given all the awesome choices we have on the Android side of things and, to think, we’ve only just entered the 2nd quarter of 2025. Like I said at the beginning though, it does get a few things right; especially when it comes to the performance side of things and when it comes to battery life. I’d say that if you’re looking to upgrade from an older iPhone and stay within the ecosystem but have a tighter budget, this is definitely worth considering. You do have to be aware of the compromises they’ve made though and really think about if it’s worth it for you.

Now, is the iPhone 16e worth paying Rs.59990? Well, in my opinion is a pricy proposition despite the offerings Apple Intelligence, A18 chip, and bigger battery life. Considering the drawbacks, the iPhone 16e is great if you buy it around Rs.50000. Therefore, you may have to wait for the e-commerce sale to grab the iPhone 16e at a great deal price.

The iPhone 16e costs Rs 59,990 for the base model that offers 128GB of storage, while the top-end 512GB model costs Rs 89,900. Even if we consider the starting price, the opportunity cost of the iPhone 16e seems quite high, given that one can buy Android flagships offering all the bells and whistles. Phones like the Xiaomi 15 (review), OPPO Find X8 (review), Vivo X200 (review), etc are all priced in close vicinity. However, I think the 16e would appeal more to those who covet an iPhone, and would settle for nothing else. And with the iPhone 16 (review) listed at Rs 72,900 on some e-com websites (at the time of writing), things become tricky for the 16e. By itself, it’s a capable device, scoring on core aspects like performance and battery life.

With the unusual hardware and software blend that makes up the iPhone 16e, there’s a fair amount of mental gymnastics needed to justify its purchase to the average phone buyer. I you want the cheapest new iPhone or the cheapest member of the iPhone 16 to repair, that’s the iPhone 16e. If you care about the camera, display or MagSafe even a little bit, strike up for the iPhone 16 or 16 Pro, and if you’re in the market for an iPhone explicitly because of Apple Intelligence, wait. Even without waiting for the iPhone 17 series, the 16e might still be the best-value purchase for you, but only once Apple Intelligence is able to deliver on all the things Apple has currently promised, by which time the 16e may have fallen in price at third-party retailers anyway.

If we consider the Apple iPhone 16e without taking into account the price, then the only really significant drawback is the lack of an ultra-wide-angle camera. After all, the smartphone has a high-quality screen (albeit with a 60 Hz refresh rate), a productive processor, excellent stereo speakers, a high-quality (albeit single) rear camera, a pleasant battery life, at least 5 years of OS updates, as well as a relatively compact and lightweight glass and metal case with IP68 protection. But if we return to the price, then much more questions arise and it is already difficult to close our eyes to some compromises. The official price of the Apple iPhone 16e starts at 34,999 UAH (128 GB). We will not even mention Android. The Apple iPhone 15 with a dual rear camera and a neater Dynamic Island is a little cheaper. And if you add 5,000 UAH, then this is already the iPhone 16. So the pricing is somewhat surprising.

As an iPhone user of some years, I didn’t expect to love the iPhone 16e. Of course it doesn’t match up to a Pro model, and I wouldn’t expect it to for the price. But, the things which you *don’t* get are quite surprising considering this is still some way more expensive than equivalent models from other (Android) brands. Although image quality from the one and only camera is pretty good, there are certainly times when you do miss the ability to go extra wide, or to zoom further than 2x and still get good results. Maybe you wouldn’t miss either of those options, but when even rivals which cost half the price of an iPhone give you that, it’s a big shame. Moving past the hardware limitations, there’s the software limitations which are more frustrating.

Let us get this absolutely clear: the iPhone 16e is clearly targeted at those who want a new-ish iPhone. The iPhone 16e will win no spec battles against Android devices in its range and might even find itself losing out to the iPhone 15 in terms of features like the Dynamic Island, cameras, and MagSafe support. Its biggest USP, however, is the fact that it brings a full-fledged iOS experience, complete with Apple Intelligence and support for future updates at a lower price than any other officially available iPhone. In fact, you can get a 256 GB iPhone 16e for less than the price of a 128 GB iPhone 16, which is actually very good value for money as you still get a flagship chip inside a compact form factor, delivering superb performance with very good battery life.

Indeed, your personal requirements will see you picking or ignoring the iPhone 16e. I could tolerate the 60Hz display, the slower charging and everything else, but the camera was indeed the deal breaker for me, especially considering this phone's price tag. The elephant in the room is iPhone 15 (Review). It sells at around the same price as iPhone 16e during festive sales and, so it makes little sense to pick up an iPhone 16e unless you prioritise battery life and nothing else. The iPhone 16e is such a strange phone. In many ways it’s astonishingly good, delivering superb speed, good battery life, the latest Apple Intelligence features, and an attractive design at an affordable price. And then you bump into the lack of MagSafe and the single rear camera lens. The only word for it is lopsided, and I’m struggling to see who the iPhone 16e is for. You’re forced to pay for a state-of-the-art processor which is overkill for most people and is only there for Apple Intelligence–an AI system that is flawed and very much a work in progress. The Apple iPhone 16e ticks plenty of boxes. Performance is superb, battery life is excellent and the design is a considerable upgrade over the iPhone SE. The single sensor camera system is brilliant, the display is punchy, and the user interface is every bit a flagship iPhone experience. It isn’t what I would call “budget” or “cheap”, and removing MagSafe feels a little miserly. But omitting some of the iPhone 16’s other features is understandable when you gain $200/£200 in your pocket opting for this entry-level model. The Android alternatives cost less, have more versatile camera setups, and smoother 120Hz displays – but you don’t buy oranges when you fancy an apple. Even OnePlus has a worthy rival to the most affordable iPhone in its OnePlus 13R ($599.99 at OnePlus). It might not come out as the first pick in your mind, mainly because OnePlus only sells its phones unlocked, but the 13R is essentially a 2024 flagship set up for 2025. It packs Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset under the hood and pairs it with 12GB of RAM — more than any other phone mentioned. However, there's a single camera at the back, with the device missing out on a wide-angle lens. You don't get MagSafe or a 60Hz panel, and at $599, the device isn't as good a value as the iPhone 15. The iPhone 16e is for people who want an iPhone without dropping over $1,500. I think the purpose of the 16e is to lure people away from the secondhand market and towards getting a new phone with Apple Intelligence. Given the specs and price point, I think it’ll work. This isn’t a budget phone, and it’s not a true replacement for the iPhone SE (given how much less expensive the SE was, but also how behind its features were). But it’s also not supposed to be. But at $600, I think it's fair to expect a little more from Apple. Any "budget" device — even one as expensive as this — is going to have to make concessions to hit its price point. It's true on Android, and it's true here as well. With the iPhone 16e, Apple prioritized build quality and processor performance over a more robust camera system or power user favorites like MagSafe, Camera Control, and the Dynamic Island. On one hand, the iPhone 16e fits more seamlessly into Apple's flagship series than its previous budget model, featuring a similar design, identical hardware, and shared capabilities. On the other hand, Apple has deliberately removed some features, likely to create differentiation and prevent it from being too competitive within the lineup. This effectively turns it into a downgraded iPhone, with a particularly noticeable compromise in the camera department. Additionally, while marketed as a budget-friendly iPhone, it is far from cheap. For Apple loyalists unwilling to consider other brands, another cost-effective option is purchasing the previous model.

And I think the comparison is fair. If you want the flagship experience, then yes, the iPhone 15 may make good sense. With bank offers and discounts, you can get the iPhone 15 at an almost similar price point: for about Rs 60,000. But this comparison is not as simple as it seems. With each of these phones you gain some and you lose some. On the iPhone 15 you get the dynamic island, but otherwise, both the 16e and the iPhone 15 offer a similar display ratio and refresh rate. Then on the iPhone 15, you get the old-fashioned toggle aka mute switch, whereas on the iPhone 16e you get a more modern action button.

The iPhone 16e is a solid phone that offers most of the core iPhone experience with a few things left out for a lower cost. Many of these things, such as slower wifi, a slightly less powerful chip, no camera control button and an older-style notch probably don’t matter much to most people. But the lack of MagSafe and only a single camera on the back may be deal breakers for some. The advantage the 16e has over the iPhone 15 and older, cheaper models still available from third-party retailers is the Apple Intelligence features, some of which are useful but many are underwhelming or bettered by third-party apps. The biggest problem with the 16e is its price. Though it costs about 25% less than a regular iPhone 16, £599 is still very much at the premium end of the market.

When the iPhone 16e was first announced, people questioned why this phone was more expensive than the outgoing SE (3rd generation), but I don’t think that’s the point. The iPhone 16e is a very different beast from the SE. As suggested in the name, this is more of a 16 lite, providing a reduced set of features but still very much part of the current range. What this phone does, it does very well. It feels great in the hand, thanks to the superb build quality, and it's a very pleasing size – both to hold and for the screen. The addition of Face ID, the Action button and the high-resolution screen make it easy to access, while the power of the A18 chip means it’s ready for everything from video editing to gaming.

At a starting price of S$949, the Apple iPhone 16e is priced to entice you into getting a basic iPhone. But if you want more features, the iPhone 16 is a S$350 step up. Still, the iPhone 16e may make sense for someone like my dad who doesn't need or use all the features on an iPhone, but is comfortable, and happy staying inside the iOS ecosystem. The iPhone 16e is a solid smartphone - it offers Apple's iconic design, now made cleaner than ever, durable as always, and, well, just beautiful. The 16e is also one of the most compact and lightweight modern smartphones on the market. And it costs under $799/€800, which translates to affordable in Apple's world. But it is not the next iPhone SE or an iPhone mini successor. This alone would be a big turn-off for many customers (some of our team members included) who were expecting a new mini iPhone even if it wasn't meant to be as affordable as before. The iPhone 16e being a recycled iPhone 13 with scrapped iPhone 16 chips is surely not helping its case, especially at that price.

Would I buy the iPhone 16e? Definitely not. I don't necessarily need the best of the best all the time, but I'd miss the Dynamic Island and I'm not fond of the sizable bezels. There are other factors, too, like the lack of a higher refresh rate display, and I've grown very fond of playing around with Photographic Styles. I'm clearly not the iPhone 16e's audience, though. This phone is for people that need a new iPhone and are currently on the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, or maybe the iPhone SE, who don't want to shell out the money for the pricey iPhone 16. In fact, I'd argue that the iPhone 16e will actually cannibalize the iPhone 16's sales. It offers all the features that matter to the average person, alongside a cheaper price tag.

The iPhone 16e is Apple's most affordable new iPhone, positioned between budget and flagship territory. It offers a minimalist design with some premium touches and ultimately aims to balance accessibility and high-end appeal. However, its place in the lineup feels ambiguous, making it one of Apple's most unusual releases.

Should you spend $100 more, and get the iPhone 15? Again, it's a matter of compromises: a second, ultra-wide camera but an older, A16 Bionic chipset; the useful Dynamic Island, but no Apple Intelligence; MagSafe support, but shorter battery life compared to the iPhone 16e. I can't say I agree with Apple, that the AI is a big enough selling point on its own, and I wish Ultra WideBand — for precise AirTag location — had made it to the 16e's spec sheet. I also think it's far too easy to dismiss these $100 increments, particularly if you're not used to considering things from a strict budgeting perspective.

The iPhone 16e is an incredible value at $599. It’s as fast and future-proof as any modern flagship phone, it takes great photos and it somehow lasts even longer on a charge than the regular iPhone 16 that costs $200 more. If you’re getting your first iPhone, buying one for a kid or upgrading from a really old model — I’m talking iPhone 11 or older — you’ll be absolutely delighted by what this thing does for just shy of 600 bucks. That said, the evolution of Apple’s entry-level phone comes with some growing pains, and it isn’t necessarily the best low-cost iPhone for everyone. Folks who love the smaller 4.7-inch screen and Touch ID button on their iPhone SE will have to either adapt to the modern 6.1-inch iPhone design or cling to their current device for a bit longer.

At the beginning of this review, I called the iPhone 16e a kind of spiritual successor to the iPhone SE. Ultimately, however, that’s a bit of an oversimplification. To be clear, the iPhone 16e is the new “budget iPhone” — but it’s not as budget as the iPhone SE. That’s a bummer, but it also leaves the door open for a fourth-generation iPhone SE, should Apple choose to release one. Some of the trade-offs you make for the cheaper iPhone make sense compared to the iPhone 16. It makes sense to lose a camera and the Camera Control. It makes sense to have a slightly older display. And, it makes sense to have a slightly older design with a notch. Other changes, like the lack of MagSafe, make no sense to me. Apple is all about that ecosystem — and not including MagSafe represents a jarring break in the ecosystem that limits the accessories people can actually use with their phones.

From its announcement, I wasn’t expecting to love the iPhone 16e as much as I do. It’s beautiful, it feels great in the hand, and it seems perfectly modern. I think this will be a great phone to hold down the bottom of the iPhone lineup for years to come. It’s a shame Apple couldn’t sell it at a lower price and left out MagSafe, but at least the latter is easily remedied. Personally, I’m excited for Apple to apply the learnings of the iPhone 16e to its Pro line of phones. Aluminum is so much lighter and feels nicer; stainless steel and titanium were always marketing gimmicks that made the phone heavier and worse. The camera being out of the way in the corner makes it easier to hold. I’m not in the market for a budget phone. But I’m glad that the people who are will be getting something great with the iPhone 16e.

Overall, it is a solid phone for people willing to forgo some of the bells and whistles of the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup. I bought the original iPhone SE because it offered top-notch performance at a fraction of the cost of Apple's flagship. You still get outstanding performance out of the iPhone 16e, but now it costs more to own the cheapest iPhone — and the decision is made tougher knowing that the iPhone 16 offers extra utility for just $200 more. Obviously, everything about the iPhone 16e is much improved over the iPhone SE 2022, but I don’t want to refer to this new model as a value phone because it’s not. This is why I think of the iPhone 16e as a new breed of iPhone because it takes some of the best parts about a modern iPhone, offering them at slightly lower cost. If you’re willing to settle for those missing features — namely MagSafe, Dynamic Island, ultrawide camera, and all the extra video features — the iPhone 16e is an excellent choice.

There’s no doubt that the iPhone 16e is a solid phone — it functions well, fits neatly into Apple’s lineup, and brings some impressive features. But the way Apple has priced it makes things tricky. At Rs 59,900, it’s positioned as the most affordable iPhone to support Apple Intelligence, powered by the A18 chip. For anyone deep in Apple’s ecosystem, that’s a big deal. However, Apple has clearly cut some corners to keep it in this price bracket. It lacks multiple rear cameras, Dynamic Island, and some of the premium features found on pricier iPhones. In a market like India, where value-for-money is king, that puts the iPhone 16e in a tough spot. If you’re looking for an iPhone on a budget, this one does the job. But at this price, older iPhone models or even flagship Android phones offer better hardware and versatility, especially if you’re interested in Apple’s ecosystem or Apple Intelligence. If, however, you’re keen on it, it’s a completely different conversation.

Forget the iPhone SE; the iPhone 16e represents a whole new class of affordable iPhone. It has an excellent screen, powerful performance, a cutting-edge CPU with Apple Intelligence, and even an all-new C1 modem chip. It's also a bit of a frustrating conundrum. Apple has raised the price to the point where it's almost out of budget range, but it hasn't added a second camera, and it's brought back the notch. Ultimately, this is another great iPhone – but it may not be the best choice if you're looking for a 'budget' phone.

The Apple iPhone 16e has everything that the SE models lack. For example, a larger display, long-lasting battery life, a powerful processor, and the latest features. To a certain extent, the phone got to give close competition to last year’s iPhone 15. But it doesn’t mean that the phone didn’t have any flaws. For example, you won’t receive dynamic range photography. The device didn’t have a higher refresh rate, a big camera notch, no dynamic island, and so on. Undoubtedly, this is the most basic phone that Apple released in 2025. But the price point is still quite high. If you can wait for a couple of months, you might notice some price drops. But if you want a phone right now, then consider getting the iPhone 15. It has overall better camera features with a slight downgrade in performance.

The iPhone 16e sees Apple moving its lowest-cost phone upmarket. Priced about midway between the discontinued iPhone SE and the iPhone 16, it isn't the "budget iPhone" many expected. Instead, the iPhone 16e is a capable new entry point that sets the stage for big changes in the iPhone's future. For $599, you get a well-made piece of hardware with strong performance and all the Apple Intelligence features of pricier models. In addition, Apple's C1 modem ensures fast 5G and accurate location services while introducing new efficiencies that contribute to battery life that beats the iPhone 16. As good as the iPhone 16e is, the iPhone 16's faster 5G and Wi-Fi, brighter screen, and feature-rich wide-angle camera give it the edge, so it remains our Editors' Choice as the best iPhone for most buyers.

Apple’s most affordable iPhone has finally gotten its much-needed update. Not only does it have a more contemporary design and upgraded internals, but it also gets a new name. It’s called the iPhone 16E. You can make your own guesses as to what the “E” stands for, but it’s obvious that Apple wants you to think of it as an extension of the iPhone 16 lineup. Crucially, Apple’s recipe for a cheaper iPhone hasn’t changed: keep the essentials and trim the fat. So in the case of the iPhone 16E, have they taken too much off to lower its price, or have they got the balance right? Let us dig deeper to find out.

It’s easy for me to get caught up in outrage, ranting at Apple’s decisions to exclude MagSafe or raise prices. But for people who don’t use magnetic accessories or who finance their smartphones over a two-year period, those might be non-issues. What bothered me most as I was reviewing the iPhone 16e wasn’t its slow wireless charging speed or the notch atop the display — it was ultimately the solo camera sensor. Anyone coming from the iPhone 11 and up will likely miss the ultrawide option, even if the iPhone 16e’s 48MP sensor is a genuine improvement. Whether the iPhone 16e is a good purchase for you ultimately depends on how much those limitations bother you. If you don’t care about MagSafe, taking photos or the principle that you could save hundreds of dollars on a better Android phone, the iPhone 16e makes sense.

Apple's new iPhone 16e should definitely not be ignored. This is a great smartphone that packs quite a punch for a much cheaper price than its siblings. No, it doesn't get all of the features found on the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro but if things such as Camera Control and MagSafe don't really bother you then this is a solid device to consider. What you do get is a beautifully made phone that is built for the future and the next generation of Apple Intelligence updates. There's no question that the iPhone 16 line-up is now one of the best and most expansive Apple has ever introduced, but it also makes choosing the right model tougher than ever. You can't go wrong with any of these iPhone models and the iPhone 16e's lower price makes it seriously tempting. Just be aware that its lower cost means fewer features. You'll need to decide what really matters to you and what compromises you are prepared to make.

The iPhone 16e marks a big change in direction for Apple. The company does not sell any phones cheaper than $599 right now, making the barrier to entry for its ecosystem a lot higher than before. That said, the iPhone 16e is an excellent phone. It looks good, has all the niceties of a modern iPhone, including a big, OLED display and a modern, 48-megapixel camera. It actually beats other phones in the lineup in several ways; it’s the lightest new iPhone you can buy, and it has excellent battery life. It performs just as well as the iPhone 16, and fully supports Apple Intelligence. It doesn’t have MagSafe, which is a shame, but not everyone will care. Most people who want a no-nonsense iPhone for the least amount of money won’t mind the other omissions, either, such as the lack of Dynamic Island.

The iPhone 16e is a really good entry-level iPhone for anyone who is new to the Apple ecosystem or wants to upgrade from an older iPhone model (iPhone 14 or older). It comes with Apple Intelligence, an incredibly long battery life and the A18 chip—making it a future-proof iPhone for the coming years. However, there are also compromises: The lack of MagSafe restricts the use of accessories, the lack of an ultra-wide-angle lens is noticeable in the camera, and savings were made on features such as UWB and Wi-Fi 7. It's also worth taking a look at the iPhone 15, which is often cheaper and doesn't make any compromises in some areas (e.g. display)—but then comes without Apple Intelligence on board. However, if you want the latest Apple features and top battery life, the iPhone 16e is a smart choice—even if you have to make compromises here and there.

This is the world the iPhone 16E enters. It’s Apple’s cheapest phone, but it’s not cheap — probably for the aforementioned “lack of competition” reasons. It’s an iPhone that does iPhone things, but it’s probably missing at least one major feature for any given buyer, whether that’s an extra camera or the convenience of a MagSafe ring. If you’re clinging desperately to an older model and want a new iPhone for the least possible money, the 16E is the one to get.

In an ideal world, we’d see Apple keep the 16 and the 16e in the lineup for a few years, letting the cost drop a couple hundred dollars to bring back some actual entry-level iPhone pricing with devices that support Apple Intelligence, but it’s too soon to tell. At this point, Apple is aiming to make sure a majority of its products can support AI, and that means we’ll need to wait and see where the prices end up in a few years. The iPhone 16e retails for $899 outright, but it can be bought at a cheaper price from a variety of Canadian carriers. The phone is up for pre-orders and will be fully available on February 28. Despite the gripes, I must say I like the look of the Apple iPhone 16e. Apple has finally updated the design, it has better battery life, a more modern camera, a faster processor, plus more RAM and storage. The only problem is that as well as a massive overhaul, the iPhone 16e is also a lot more expensive than the previous model, with prices starting at £599 for the 128GB phone, rising £100 for the 256GB model and another £100 for the 512GB phone. With rivals such as the Pixel 8a starting at £499, that’s a bit of an ask. We’ll be reviewing the latest addition to the “iPhone family” just as soon as we can get our hands on one, so watch this space to find out if the phone is everything it promises to be.

Comentario
