EN→ESIf you’re a student or a working professional looking to buy a laptop for basic, everyday tasks, buy it with your eyes closed. (Okay, maybe you can open your eyes to choose the colour). If you’re a content creator or someone who dabbles with image and video editing, you can buy it with one eye closed. (Use the other eye to consider alternatives that might suit your specific use case better). And if you’re a power user or need a powerful machine for gaming or heavy work, there are other fish in the ocean. Speaking of, similarly-priced options on the Windows side of the fence include the likes of the ASUS Vivobook S16, the Motorola MotoBook 60 and the Acer Swift Neo, with all of them offering OLED displays, 16 gigs of RAM and 512GB storage. The Neo’s IPS display, however, is so good that it can almost match those OLED screens in terms of visuals. The Neo also beats those rivals in Geekbench single-thread performance, not to mention the solid battery life and ecosystem benefits it can offer. At the end of the day, the MacBook Neo is solid value for money, delivers the core MacBook experience without breaking the bank, and makes a very strong case for itself as a laptop worth considering not just by students, but anyone who covets a reliable computing device for everyday use. A low-hanging Apple, if you will.

EN→ESFor many, the MacBook Neo will be their first experience with macOS, and it's clear Apple wanted to make the best introduction possible — without breaking the bank. At $599 for the 256 GB model and $699 for the 512 GB model with Touch ID (including on Amazon), you'll be hard-pressed to find a competing laptop that brings so much to the table, particularly when you factor in Apple's overall tightly integrated ecosystem and the seamless experience it offers across devices. If you already own an iPhone but still use Windows, now is the time to switch to Mac — and if you don't own an iPhone, you'll be tempted to get one after experiencing the Neo. With that said, the Neo is still a budget laptop — arguably the best one out there, yes, but a budget offering nonetheless. If you're a professional content creator, designer, or anyone else who regularly performs demanding tasks using resource-intensive software, your laptop hunt should start at the base MacBook Air model and move upward from there. For everyone else, however, the Neo is the MacBook that should get your attention.

EN→ESHere’s a scenario that might be familiar: I can use all the major operating systems at a relatively deep level, but I’ve preferred Macs for a long time. However, I also fall beneath Apple’s target financial demographic—I don't regularly buy $1,000-plus laptops—so I have resorted to slumming it with a basic iPad and a keyboard cover to emulate an Apple computing experience. I’ve done this for the past several years, even growing to enjoy it, compared with how it feels to use most budget laptops. I’ve even completed paid writing work using this method, showing just how capable this solution has been for me. But the new MacBook Neo just upended my Apple cart. I expected an iPad price hike given 2026's soaring memory costs. And I doubted the rumors leading up to the MacBook Neo's release.

EN→ESLooking at the MacBook Neo, you need to clearly understand that this is not a universal Mac for everyone. Given the processor from a smartphone, the laptop is limited to simple work and is definitely not designed for users who work seriously with media or large amounts of data. And to form a low price, several functions and features familiar to modern Macs are simply not here. However, the model is perfect for light basic work and study, and with such a level of portability. And it seems that the MacBook Neo has become Apple's broader strategy for attracting new users. With the expectation that when a hypothetical student chooses the next laptop after the Neo, he will no longer agree to anything else, and will choose a more expensive MacBook. Whether such a strategy will work, we will see over time.

EN→ESSo let me wrap it all up now. And based on everything I’ve discussed throughout this review, one thing is crystal clear: the MacBook Neo is a fantastic little laptop. Especially to those who don’t do a lot on their computer besides web browsing and stuff. I know it has its fair share of problems, like being limited to just 8GB of memory, no backlit keyboard, no Touch ID for the base model, and slow charging speed… but for the Western market, the MacBook Neo is a great way to enter the Apple ecosystem. Especially if you manage to grab it for just $499 with the student discount. Which, let’s be honest, seems to be Apple’s main goal with the Neo. You buy a cheap MacBook… see how much better it is than what Windows laptops were offering… so you’re tempted to try out other fruits in Apple’s basket one. by. one. But here in Nepal, where Apple's student discount program is nonexistent, that’s where it gets a little complicated for this guy. Or not because the M2 Air that avoids every. single. issue I have with the MacBook Neo, is available for around NPR 125,000 these days. Making it a much better value! And if you do more than the “basic” stuff, like programming, photo/video editing, or music production, the M2 chip’s superior multi-core performance and a spacious 16GB of memory are gonna be so much more useful than whatever else the MacBook Neo is offering. Trust me on this.

EN→ESAt a starting price of ₹69,900, the MacBook Neo is going to make life very difficult for Windows devices, despite its tradeoffs of the mobile processor, thicker bezel, lesser memory. The Windows price advantage — the one thing that kept many potential users away from Macs — is going away to a large extent with this more affordable Apple device which always has more aspirational value that a budget device running the Microsoft OS. And the MacBook Neo does not cut corners for this segment of users, which is something they will appreciate. I recommend this device for younger users who need convenience and functionality without any compromises on style. This is going to be the first Mac for a lot of people across the world.

EN→ESWhen the MacBook Neo was announced, the idea of a laptop that ran on the processor from an iPhone seemed almost ridiculous. However, time spent with the machine shows that it works, and it works well. There are things that could be better - that 8GB unified RAM pool is going to look tiny to many users, especially those who demand more than that just for their graphics cards, but the Neo isn’t a laptop made for gamers or 8K video editors. For browsing, office tasks and most image editing it does just fine, the lack of ports and internal storage a bigger issue. What you get is a nicely built Mac for a lot less than the next model up, and that means the Neo has real value.

EN→ESThe MacBook Neo is a near-universal success. I didn’t think Apple could pull it off, but this laptop is easily the best budget option you can buy, and I am sure it is going to scare of a lot of Windows and Chromebooks manufacturers. Yes, of course, you can get cheaper – but you can’t get anything this fast, this long-lasting and this nice to look at for the price. For a company with a reputation for releasing expensive tech, the fact that Apple has done such a good job with the Neo should be commended. Sacrifices have been made, and for a lot of people, the MacBook Air M5 will still be a better buy. That machine has a backlit keyboard, 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, a more colour accurate screen, a more capable M5 chip and faster ports. But it’s £500/$500 more, and that’s a lot of money when the Neo is so good.

EN→ESApple’s MacBook Neo punches well above its price range, though it’s possible to get more punch (via more RAM) from a Windows laptop at this price point. But it won’t be the Neo, and it won’t feature the same build and attention to detail across the whole package. That’s… sort of the point. Few laptops can match Apple’s design in the R12,000 price bracket. Even fewer will run an operating system with a mobile chipset and 8GB of RAM quite as well as the Neo does. In terms of performance, it’s very close to Apple’s MacBook Air (M1), with some slight concessions to come in lower than that departed notebook’s final price point. It’s a MacBook for regular folks, really. Even if the Fruit Company’s idea of ‘budget’ is still somewhat higher than a regular person’s budget.

EN→ESWhat you're getting with the MacBook Neo is essentially a six-year-old smartphone CPU in a sleek-looking laptop body. Does that mean it won't get the job done in 2026? Not at all, but whether it's the right laptop for you depends on what you plan to do with the MacBook Neo, as well as if you fall into Apple's narrow definition of an average user. Do you spend most of your time in Safari and also use apps like Photos to edit images? Are you a student mainly writing essays? Maybe you subscribe to Apple's Creator Studio bundle, which includes apps like Pixelmator Pro, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and more, all creative apps that are optimized to run smoothly on the entry-level laptop. If that sounds like you, the MacBook Neo is a premium-feeling laptop with enough power for basic tasks that you've been waiting for. If it doesn't, you're likely better off with the far more capable MacBook Air if you're a Mac user. However, it's important to be aware of the corners Apple has cut with the MacBook Neo, including a slow SSD, a USB-C 2 port, and of course, a measly 8GB of RAM. I can't help but feel that the inevitable A19 Pro-powered MacBook Neo will feature 16GB of RAM, making it a far more capable laptop than this first-run device.

EN→ESNow, coming to the question that might be on your mind: should you go ahead and spend Rs 69,900 on Apple’s latest MacBook? The answer depends on what you actually need from your laptop. The MacBook Neo delivers the core Mac experience at a price point that is new for Apple. Thus, it is the best way to experience macOS if you aren’t willing to spend around Rs 1 lakh on a new device. The laptop also boasts a relatively strong day to day performance, excellent battery life, reliable display, and a design that lives up to Apple’s reputation. With that being said, there are also certain compromises that include the non-backlit keyboard, absence of touch ID in the base variant and only having an 8 GB RAM option, raising a question in terms of future-proofing. However, for students, first-time Mac users, or anyone looking for a reliable laptop in this budget, the Neo makes a very solid case for itself. It gets the essentials right and comes with Apple’s reliability. And for some people, that’s enough.

At the same time, it retains limitations in memory scalability, port selection, display technology, and input features. Yet, starting at Rs 69,990, it enters the mainstream, and how! EN→ESIf it isn’t clear by now, the MacBook Neo offers excellent value for money. If you want to spend less than S$1,000 on a new laptop, I don’t see why you would buy anything other than a Neo. This will run rings around most Windows laptops in the same price bracket. It’s certainly built better than all of them. The main competition for the Neo is really a used MacBook Air, specifically one that has an M3 or M2 chip. Those are going for about the same money as a brand-new Neo, and you can find refurbished units on the Apple Online Store. If it were me, I would pick a used M2 or M3 MacBook Air over a Neo, but only if it came with 16GB of memory and a warranty.

Looking at the specifications, the build and the price, I thought it would be a slam-dunk recommendation for the MacBook Neo, especially for students, who only pay £499. There’s no backlight for the keyboard, physical connectivity is limited, battery life isn’t as good as the MacBook Airs of old and that 8GB of RAM will limit multitasking performance, particularly once you fill up the SSD. These are all things that should be acknowledged. If you’re a student on a budget – or anyone else looking for a compact laptop for day to day use, for that matter – the MacBook Neo is ideal and, quite possibly, the perfect laptop. EN→ESMost assumed that a MacBook that ran on an iPhone chip would require some serious compromise. However, the MacBook Neo has proved that this is not the case. The A18 Pro chip is not only capable of lightning fast operation for the iPhone 16 Pro / Pro Max, but it handles a full version of Mac OS Tahoe too. Yes, some compromises have been made to hit this price point and perhaps to differentiate it from the MacBook Air. The lack of backlight on the keyboard, the sRGB screen, the non-thunderbolt ports, and the older style 12MP webcam. However, even with these compromises, the Neo is a great machine to use. It would have been lovely to have a bit more customisation available, to increase the SSD capacity and maybe add some more memory – though that is potentially limited by the A18 Pro chip. It also seems a little bit tight to only offer the Touch ID with the 512GB capacity model, as it’s a genuinely useful feature and one that can impact security. Overall though, the MacBook Neo is surprisingly good. I would genuinely recommend this machine to any Apple fans looking for a new laptop. For those creators looking for a workhorse, it doesn’t replace the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, but for everyone else, it’s more than enough to handle all your tasks.

EN→ESThe thing is, even if you were shopping for more expensive laptops before, there's definitely a large portion of the audience that sticks with Windows because that's what they know. Throughout my school years, I was never able to afford a MacBook of any kind, so when it came time to start making bigger purchases, I was always more drawn to Windows laptops than MacBooks. macOS always looked too strange and unfamiliar to use, and I worried the things I wanted to do wouldn't be possible. But the MacBook Neo has the potential to change a lot of people's entry points into the world of computing because of its affordable price. If you're a kid in middle school or high school and you get a MacBook Neo, that's your standard for using a computer now, so in the future, when you're buying a laptop, the MacBook Air or Pro will probably be much higher on your list of options because you already know what it's all about.

Shocker: Apple has made a budget laptop! And it’s darned good for the money. The MacBook Neo is a 13” aluminum clad MacOS laptop with 2 storage options, optional Touch ID, the usual very good Apple keyboard and trackpad experience and your choice of 4 colors. It beats most Windows laptops and Chromebooks in this price range, though unsurprisingly falls well short of the more expensive MacBook Air M5 for features and speed. It starts at $599 (take $100 off with educational discount).

EN→ESThe MacBook Neo utterly shatters the argument that if you want to do real work, you need to get a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Because the fact is, this computer will be used by teenagers and young adults who will discover their life-long creative outlets. I was there once, spending $550 on a 4-year-old MacBook Pro on eBay. Today, that gets you a brand-new Mac. Slightly compromised, sure, but so was my early 2008 MacBook Pro. Priced at just $599 for the base 256GB model or $699 for the 512GB model with Touch ID, the MacBook Neo ends the idea that a cheap computer is a slow computer. “Not slow” doesn’t do it justice — it’s incredibly fast and capable. A lot of people will fall in love with the Mac on a MacBook Neo.

My only reservation about the Neo is its longevity.

EN→ESThe MacBook Neo is a milestone not just for MacBooks but for all laptops, especially at a time that other laptop makers are raising their prices and everyone is feeling the pinch from a shaky economy. Apple has built a machine from the ground up for $599 / AU$849 that runs circles around the competition, and it will force the likes of Lenovo, HP and Dell to scramble to catch up. This system ticks all the right boxes for its low price, with a premium aluminum design, a rich and bright display you’d normally find on $1,000 laptops and good-enough performance from its A18 Pro chip. I also like the side-mounted speakers, as well as the comfy keyboard and smooth touchpad. And the more than 13 hours of battery life is very impressive at this price. However, the MacBook Neo does make some trade-offs. I wish Touch ID was standard, and the lack of Thunderbolt and a keyboard backlight is a bummer. And you should not expect to do video editing on this machine with any speed, nor should you expect the zippiest performance when you have a ton of apps open or with Apple Intelligence tasks. But for $599 / AU$899, you would be hard pressed to find a laptop that even comes close to the MacBook Neo’s value. It’s arguably the best value laptop ever and raises the bar for the entire industry.

EN→ESGiven 2026's soaring memory prices, on top of general inflation and an unpredictable tariff regime, Apple pulled off what I thought wasn't possible. The MacBook Neo is poised to set the budget-laptop world on fire as a $599 system that's better-built and sharper than anything else at or below its price. Until the PC competition somehow responds, the MacBook Neo will easily be among the top budget laptops to buy or even save up toward for everyone, from older students and Apple neophytes to simply budget-strapped Mac fans. Plus, if you've owned an iPhone for years but could never afford a MacBook, Apple just extended a beautiful aluminum olive branch. The Neo even works directly with your iPhone, for everything from Messages continuity to full-on device mirroring. Regardless, why spend $400 on an even more restricted Chromebook or a slower Windows laptop when, if you can scrounge up another $200 over time, you can get a much more powerful, reliable, and long-lasting laptop? (Budget PC laptops in the same price range or a little higher also need to watch their six.)

EN→ESThe launch of the $599 MacBook Neo feels like the moment the ‘iPad-as-a-computer’ experiment is officially over. For years, Apple heavily advertised the ‘What’s a computer?’ campaign and insisted that a slab of glass, a Magic Keyboard, and a Pencil were all you needed to get work done. But with the Neo, Apple has quietly waved the white flag. By offering a full-fledged macOS experience at a price point that undercuts even a mid-tier iPad Pro setup, they have finally admitted that a professional workflow requires a file-based desktop OS, not a mobile-first environment with a keyboard slapped on.

He’s my last remaining relative sticking with midrange laptops, and they tend not to stick around for that long. I hope that Apple releases a larger MacBook Neo by the time his current machine kicks the bucket, because with this colorful, sharp display and long battery life, mixed with performance that outdoes anything he’s ever owned (aside from his current phone), he’s going to love it. But for everyone who is looking for a great 13-inch laptop that doesn’t make you think as hard about your budget or financing options, the MacBook Neo is the one for you.

The MacBook Neo is for anyone who needs an everyday laptop. Now, when considering the MacBook Neo for more specialized needs, you need to think about what you get for the money. EN→ESI still want to do more testing, and I'll be updating my MacBook Neo review soon. My next test will be to set up some AI models on the device and see what the Neural Engine can and can't really handle. But as someone who works with a lot of video, photography, and AI tools, the MacBook Neo can handle quite a bit of my daily workflow. First-time buyers will also appreciate how easily it works with the iPhone and iPad. Your files can instantly sync across devices, and AirDrop fills any gaps. Like I said, if you're comparing the $599 MacBook Neo with a similarly priced Windows laptop or Chromebook, it's going to be really hard to say no to the Neo. Unless Apple seriously stocked up, I wouldn't be surprised if this device sells out in the near future.

EN→ESHere is what the MacBook Neo is not: It is not a replacement for a MacBook Air. Even compared to the old M1 version, the Neo makes several compromises in ports, keyboard and trackpad features, screen quality, and performance that collectively mean that the number of people with an Apple Silicon MacBook who should “upgrade” to a new Neo is effectively zero. The MacBook Air is far from Apple’s fastest laptop, but the thing that has always felt good about the M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5 is that—especially when paired with 16GB or more of RAM—there’s very little that won’t run on one of those chips.

EN→ESUnsurprisingly, the MacBook Neo is a killer deal at this price point. It may not be as powerful as Apple's other laptops, and Apple has made some obvious compromises to get to the lower price, but it's still easily better than any Windows laptop I can think of at $599. I would recommend upgrading to the $699 model for the increased storage and Touch ID, if you can afford it. Touch ID alone makes a big difference when you're constantly signing into apps or unlocking your laptop. And while I wish it wasn't locked behind a $100 upgrade, it's still very helpful to have. You do have to be comfortable with some compromises, though. 8GB of RAM isn't all that much, and the older ports mean that your connectivity options might be limited. That said, if you're a student or someone looking for a casual laptop to use for productivity, web-based tasks, and other light tasks, the MacBook Neo is easily the laptop to buy.

But like every Apple product, if you want to push it a little bit further, you might be surprised by what it can do. It isn’t a MacBook Air, though. And it certainly isn’t a MacBook Pro. I can’t tell you which of the three MacBooks is right for you, but at least you have more choice now. And, yes, if you open yourself up to the second-hand and refurbished market, that choice expands considerably. This isn’t where my coverage of the MacBook Neo ends. I need to compare it fully against the MacBook Air, and, judging by those YouTube comments, the M4 iPad Air, too. I’ll also be using it as my main laptop for the foreseeable future, so expect plenty of check-ins over the coming months.

EN→ESWithout question, I would have purchased a MacBook Neo instead of a more expensive MacBook Air for each of my kids had it been an option a few years ago when they were in high school. (I've since had to buy my daughter a second Air in college after her first Air died, which makes the Neo an even better bargain when you factor in the chance of needing to buy a replacement.) My kids are generally gender-conforming, so I could see my daughter picking the blush model and my son going for indigo, while I sat back, hoping that one of them would choose citrus, my favorite color among the Neo's four choices. The MacBook Neo is easily the best laptop for school use, especially if you or the student you're buying for already has an iPhone. The two work seamlessly together.

A lot of Windows vendors will be perplexed at how this has been achieved. And that’s a good thing, because we’ll see better Windows laptops as a result. There are doubtless compromises. Battery life is still very good at around 8–10 hours but I didn’t get anywhere near Apple’s claim of 16 hours. The display is great but you need to have the brightness whacked up. While its price is at the higher end of what I’d consider 'budget', the design, build quality and performance are all leagues ahead of its Windows and Chromebook competitors. I particularly like how there’s been no compromise when it comes to macOS — you can run any Mac app or connect your iPhone up to the MacBook Neo, just as you can with far more expensive Mac products, and the screen also blows the budget competition out of the water. Comentario
