At least one problem still needs to be solved
According to the modder, the mod is still an early prototype. However, quite a few things are already working well: Movement, attacks and other animations are already synchronized. The biggest catch is that while the players can see each other, they are technically in two separate game worlds or instances, meaning enemies, for example, aren't necessarily in the same location. Quests, loot and inventories also remain separate. Horses and some world interactions aren't being synchronized correctly yet either.
The modder hasn't yet presented a finished solution for the separate game worlds. For now, he is only experimenting with individual features designed to link the two instances more closely. One example is a Shared Damage system: If one player hits an enemy, the same enemy in the other player's world should take the corresponding amount of damage. The enemies themselves can still be in different locations. The mod isn't currently available for download, and there is no release date either. Whether it will eventually offer a fully fledged co-op mode remains to be seen. Still, the first successful tests certainly look promising – and another project already offers a more concrete potential solution to the current mod's biggest problem.
Another project shows a possible solution
For the current mod's biggest problem, another project at least demonstrates what a potential solution could look like. Reddit user u/No_Variation_7024 has also connected two running instances of Crimson Desert, but the approach goes beyond simply synchronizing the players: When connecting, the second client receives a snapshot of the world state, including the time of day, weather and NPC data. Changes can then be continuously transferred between the two instances, which is intended to keep the two separate worlds as closely synchronized as possible.
This approach isn't finished either. While two running game instances can already exchange data, there's still a lot missing for true co-op: The second player still needs to be reliably integrated as a separate character, their controls and movements need to be transmitted correctly and combat doesn't yet work fully together either. Despite the strikingly similar Reddit usernames (u/No-Context2224 and u/No_Variation_7024), there is no indication that the two projects are connected.
