Tiempos de respuesta del display

Los tiempos de respuesta del display muestran lo rápido que puede cambiar la pantalla de un color al siguiente. Tiempos lentos de respuesta pueden llevar a imágenes persistentes alrededor de objetos en movimiento o a displays borrosos. Particularmente los aficionados a los juegos 3D frenéticos deberían usar una pantalla con tiempos de respuesta rápidos.

La pantalla mostró buenos tiempos de respuesta en nuestros tests pero podría ser demasiado lenta para los jugones competitivos.

Eso quiere decir que el tiempo de respuesta es similar al dispositivo testado medio (21.6 ms).

Eso quiere decir que el tiempo de respuesta es peor que la media (33.9 ms) de todos los dispositivos testados.

Parpadeo de Pantalla / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Para atenuar el brillo de pantalla algunos portátiles están encendiendo y apagando la retroiluminación muy rápidamente. Esto se hace a una frecuencia que no debiera detectarse a simple vista. Si la frecuencia es demasiado lenta, la gente sensible podría experimentar problemas visuales, dolores de cabeza e incluso ver parpadeos.
Parpadeo de Pantalla / PWM detectado 20830 Hz ≤ 90 % de brillo

La retroiluminación del display parpadea a 20830 Hz (seguramente usa PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) a un brillo del 90 % e inferior. Sobre este nivel de brillo no debería darse parpadeo / PWM.

La frecuencia de 20830 Hz es bastante alta, por lo que la mayoría de gente sensible al parpadeo no debería ver parpadeo o tener fatiga visual.

Comparación: 53 % de todos los dispositivos testados no usaron PWM para atenuar el display. Si se usó, medimos una media de 18110 (mínimo: 5 - máxmo: 3846000) Hz.

CPUs ULV clase U y estaciones de trabajo móviles – dos ingredientes que no suelen casar muy bien. Esto puede cambiar con la llegada de los procesadores quadcore ULV Kaby Lake-R a principios del 2018 pero a día de hoy aún no están disponibles y no estamos analizando aún un hipotético ZBook 15u G5, sino el  ZBook 15u G4 con dual core Kaby Lake.

El G4 tiene lo básico. Una carcasa de material rígida y de gran calidad con dispositivos de entrada que si bien no son de lo mejorcito sí son adecuados para una mula de carga como esta. La amplia variedad de puertos incluye VGA y un DisplayPort de tamaño completo y, a diferencia del display del modelo business HP Elitebook 850 G4, el del ZBook 15u G4 fue decente en general. IPS en vez de TN, amplios ángulos de visión, y un brillo máximo de más de 300 nits.

Nuestra única queja con el display es su cobertura de color subestándar que puede estar bien para un dispositivo business pero que no cumple con los elevados estándares de una estación de trabajo. Además, nos habría encantado ver un puerto Thunderbolt 3 en el dispositivo – de hecho, hemos llegado a esperarlo en un portátil de este precio. Nuestra mayor preocupación son las dos unidades de procesamiento, CPU y GPU. Ambas son tan rápidas como cabría esperar, y lo hacen con unos bajísimos niveles de ruido (ruido electrónico aparte). Sin embargo, no son bastante potentes para una estación de trabajo moderna. Esto resulta particularmente obvio con la obsoleta GPU AMD FirePro GPU que debería haber sido descontinuada y retirada hace mucho tiempo. En vez de eso, una GPU básica Quadro como la M520 o M620 habría sido perfecto. Y por último, pero no por ello menos importante, quedamos horrorizados con las elevadas temperaturas superficiales del G4 y su cargador mal dimensionado.

Sentimientos encontrados: el alto potencial del ZBook 15u G4 queda arruinado por su antigua, lenta, y obsoleta  GPU.

La cuestión es: ¿a qué tipo de usuario apunta HP con su ZBook 15u G4? Los usuarios de estaciones de trabajo con requisitos de rendimiento excepcionales encontrarán mejores alternativas, como Dell Precision 5520,  Macbook Pro 15, o incluso HP ZBook Studio G4 (actualmente en análisis). Dado que traen baterías de más capacidad, estas alternativas incluso logran un mayor aguante de batería. El G4 tampoco es la mejor elección si buscas una estación de trabajo asequible pero energéticamente eficiente para tareas no demasiado intensivas – Al Lenovo ThinkPad P51s le puede faltar la sofisticada carcasa de metal del G4 pero puede equiparse con una batería de 6 celdas opcional aumentando mucho su aguante. Además, también trae Thunderbolt 3 y la GPU Quadro M520, más rápida.

Con todo sólo podemos concluir que el ZBook 15u G4 puede ser un portátil decente, pero no puede seguirle el ritmo a otras estaciones de trabajo móviles. Quizá el modelo del año próximo construido con el mismo chasis y equipado con nuevas CPUs y GPUs más rápidas pueda cambiar eso.
