Intel y AMD hicieron olas en su industria cuando anunciaron una asociación en 2017 para desarrollar conjuntamente la plataforma Kaby Lake-G. Se trataba de un chipset único que casaba una CPU Kaby Lake-H de cuatro núcleos con una GPU Radeon RX Vega, todo ello envuelto bajo una envoltura de 100 W TDP. Sin embargo, no duró mucho en el mercado, debido en parte a su muy limitado apoyo por parte de los principales fabricantes de PC

El NUC de 2018 Hades Canyon sigue siendo el único campeón del Kaby Lake-G Core i7-8809G . Aunque sería una tontería esperar que funcione tan rápido como las últimas soluciones de 2021, seguimos interesados en ver qué diferencia de rendimiento existe entre el raro Core i7-8809G de 100 W y la actual plataforma Tiger Lake-U de 28 W

El NUC11 Phantom Canyon es el sucesor directo del NUC8 Hades Canyon, lo que lo convierte en el sistema perfecto para una comparación cara a cara. Las pruebas de rendimiento multihilo como CineBench, Blender y HWBOT x265 muestran que el Core i7-8809G y el Core i7-1165G7 están muy cerca el uno del otro a pesar de sus enormes diferencias en los niveles de TDP. Si miramos la Radeon RX Vega M GH y móvil GeForce RTX 2060esta última ofrece velocidades de fotogramas significativamente más rápidas, especialmente cuando se ejecutan títulos DX12 exigentes a resoluciones más altas, en las que el rendimiento está más ligado a la GPU

El consumo general de energía es mayor en Phantom Canyon que en Hades Canyon, lo que significa que el aumento de rendimiento no es gratuito. Sin embargo, el aumento del consumo es mucho menor que el aumento del rendimiento en porcentaje para un mayor rendimiento por vatio entre generaciones. Además, las temperaturas de los núcleos y el ruido de los ventiladores se mantienen relativamente constantes entre los dos NUC a pesar de las grandes diferencias de rendimiento. Los usuarios obtienen más rendimiento sin que la máquina haga más ruido o se caliente.

Kaby Lake-G fue divertido mientras duró, pero Phantom Canyon es la prueba de que no se necesita una arquitectura exótica cuando las CPU y GPU "de serie" pueden lograr lo mismo y con mejor soporte de software.
