On the whole, the M17X is a great notebook to have if you want something that's purely built for entertainment - whether it's for watching movies or games. It is a pretty beefy machine with the muscles to handle the latest games and it has great sounding speakers to boot. Its powerful processor also allows it to multitask very well and run apps such as Photoshop with aplomb too. However, on the downside, it is very bulky making it more of a desktop replacement than a portable gaming notebook.

However, this isn't quite enough to distract from its main problem - the fact that, as a gaming laptop, it's firmly wedged between a rock and a hard place. Its bulk means that it's not suitable for transport and, if you spent two grand on a desktop machine instead, it’d be at least twice as powerful and certainly much more upgradable.

Price was $$$$ but no worse than a nicely configured Precision M6400, but the GPU options put this laptop ahead of anything else. upgrades to a QX9300 will be the next item on my list to do. When the 4 GB DIMMS drop to a more reasonable price, a 8 GB Config could be in the works.

The Alienware M17x once again comes highly recommended as a high-end gaming and multimedia platform. Its unique design, customizable lighting system and outstanding performance make it a top choice. The M17x gets just about everything right including a beautiful full HD display, solid keyboard and touchpad, plenty of input and output ports (the most we've seen on a notebook, as a matter of fact), good speakers and surprisingly excellent battery life at almost five hours. The M17x's customization options are impressive with several graphics card choices, 3D display options, and up to two storage drives. The Nvidia GTX 680M in our system produced outstanding gaming performance.

This particular refresh of the Alienware M17x R4 is... well, refreshing. The new Ivy Bridge processor and Kepler-based Nvidia graphics card offer up great performance, and the entire system costs under £2,000 - a pretty good deal for a gaming-oriented desktop replacement. The screen is gorgeous, the speakers are good (if soft), the keyboard is excellent, and the AlienFX lighting is a nice touch. Plus, it has excellent battery life. I can't think of a reason not to get the M17x R4, except for the fact that it weighs a lot. If you're looking for a "portable" gaming powerhouse, you've found it.

Alienware: Alienware es una compañía de hardware americano y una subsidiaría absoluta de Dell. Monta principalmente para juegos de alto rendimiento. Alienware también ofrece de rebaja portátiles reetiquetados y periféricos de ordenador, como auriculares, ratones, monitores y teclados. Alienware fue fundada en 1996. La sede de la corporación está situada en Florida. Alienware estableció su sede EMEA (Europa, el medio este y África) en Irlanda, en 2002. En 2005 Alienware consiguió 170 millones de dólares en ventas anuales y lanzó una internacional en 2003 con presencia en Australia, Canadá, Francia, Alemania, el Reino Unido, y Costa Rica. La cuota de mercado internacional es limitada.

Alienware análisis

Estas tarjetas de video deben ser capaces de aguantar juegos modernos (con algunas excepciones) con altas resoluciones y altos detalles.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M SLI: La GeForce GTX 280M está basada en el chip G92b con la gama completa de 128 pipelines y por tanto es similar a la 9800 GTX+ de escritorio (pero no similar a la GTX 280). Debido al mayor numero de pipelines y una mayor velocidad de reloj es considerablemente más rápida que la 9800M GTX.

AMD Radeon HD 6970M: Tarjeta de video de alta capacidad de AMD basada en la HD 6850 para desktop, y por lo tanto, con el procesador de video UVD3 y Eyefinity+.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M: Dos tarjetas GeForce GTX 580M (GF114 Fermi) en modo SLI. Dado el consumo máximo de 2x 100 W de ambas placas MXM, la GTX580M SLI sólo puede usarse en portátiles muy grandes.

Algunos juegos actuales no fastidiosos pueden ser jugados fluidamente con pequeños detalles.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M: Tarjeta de video de nivel básico basadas en el nuevo chip GF119 con un bus de memoria de 64 Bit y soporte para GDDR5 y DDR3.

Intel Core 2 Extreme:

QX9300: Costoso CPU Quad Core móvil con un multiplicador libre y un TDP de 45 Watt. Gracias al amplio cache de Nivel 2 y a los 2,5 GHz, el CPU ofrece un buen rendimiento para aplicaciones single y multithreaded.

Intel Core i7:

620M: El Core i7-620M es la CPU Dual-Core más rápida para portatiles (en el momento de su presentación el el primer cuatrimestre de 2010). El 620M tiene una velocidad de reloj entre 2.66 y 3.33 debido al Modo Turbo y gracias a la técnica Hypertrheading 4 hilos se pueden ejecutar de forma simultanea. En el paquete, Intel tambien ha incluido un segundo nucleo con una GPU integrada y un controlador de memoria. Por tanto, el TDP de 35 vatios del paquete completo es muy bueno.

2630QM: Veloz procesador Quad-core móvil basado en la arquitectura Sandy Bridge con una tarjeta  de video integrada y controlador de memoria DDR3 de dos canales.

2820QM: Veloz procesador Quad-core móvil basado en la arquitectura Sandy Bridge con una tarjeta  de video integrada y controlador de memoria DDR3 de dos canales.

2720QM: Veloz procesador Quad-core móvil basado en la arquitectura Sandy Bridge con una tarjeta  de video integrada y controlador de memoria DDR3 de dos canales.

3610QM: Un procesador quad-core basado en Ivy Bridge con frecuencia de 2,3 GHz con soporte para Turbo Boost hasta 3,3 GHz. Ofrece un GPU integrado HD Graphics 4000 funcionando a 650-1100 MHz con un controlador de memoria DDR3 de dos canales.

3820QM: Un procesador quad-core basado en Ivy Bridge con frecuencia de 2,7 GHz con soporte para Turbo Boost hasta 3,7 GHz. Ofrece un GPU integrado HD Graphics 4000 funcionando a 650-1250 MHz con un controlador de memoria DDR3 de dos canales.

Intel Core i5:

520M: El Core i5-520M tiene solo 3 MB de Cache de nivel 3 (comparado con el i7-640M) y una velocidad de reloj entre 2.4-2.94 Ghz (Modo Turbo). Gracias al Hypertrheadiing se pueden procesar de forma simultanea 4 hilos. Se incluyen en el paquete una tarjeta gráfica integrada (GMA HD 3150) y un controlador de memoria.
