EN→ESWhen someone recently asked me why I don’t take my own photographs, I didn’t have an answer. Honestly, I just don’t know. I am not an actor, nor do I wish to be an influencer who enjoys being in front of the camera. I would rather be behind the camera, capturing everyday moments that I love to do. It’s one of the perks of being a tech journalist: travelling the world, meeting new people, and experiencing different cultures. And, most importantly, testing new gear ahead of anyone else. I hear it…those who keep pushing me to be on Instagram but it’s not going to happen, ever. Still, I promise you this: I would love to show how I see the world through my lens in private whenever you are around over a cup of coffee. I have over 2TB of photos that I have captured on my phone over the years.

EN→ESThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a camera phone. Xiaomi will tell you that, the Leica branding on the back will tell you that, and the large circular camera module that dominates the rear will tell you that before you’ve even turned it on. And after spending considerable time with the phone — including a week in Vietnam shooting over 500 photos — I’ll tell you that too. The cameras are as good as advertised. But here’s the thing nobody is really talking about. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has another trick up its sleeve, one that doesn’t come with a Leica badge or a catchy acronym. It has one of the best batteries I’ve used on a flagship phone in recent memory.

EN→ESFor the most part, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a phone that impresses. The pricing is higher this time, but it's totally understandable given the RAM price hikes! There have been improvements in many areas — it's more refined, more mature, and getting closer to being a truly balanced flagship. But is it the most balanced flagship out there? Not yet. Something like Samsung still feels slightly more polished overall, and the software is still the bottleneck. Xiaomi could improve further by adding more meaningful AI features, refining animations, and improving battery optimization. But when it comes to the camera experience, it's just so good. Going out on a weekend for a photo walk, shooting black-and-white portraits, capturing nature, chasing light — this is that phone. The camera experience feels serene. Pure. That Leica tuning, that dramatic black and white, that 1-inch sensor depth — it feels intentional.

EN→ESThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra is one of the most capable flagship phones of 2026, but it’s not without its trade-offs. Buying it largely comes down to two things: whether the cameras justify the price, and whether you can live with a phone that is big, heavy, and expensive in a market full of strong alternatives. For most photography enthusiasts and power users, the answer is likely yes. For everyone else, it’s worth thinking through. If you want a deep dive into the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, you can check out my review here. If you’re pressed for time, here’s a quick breakdown of why you should buy and skip the phone.

EN→ESSome people might nitpick at Xiaomi’s decision to charge an extra S$100 for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, but we think it’s a reasonable ask when considering the amount of upgrades in this phone. Additionally, Xiaomi has managed to keep prices the same over the last two years. If you really can’t bear to fork out that extra S$100, all you have to do is take advantage of the early bird discount to pay S$1,699. Whether it’s the new and more refined HyperOS 3, the improved Leica-branded cameras or the excellent hardware inside, Xiaomi has continued to do a lot of things right. But this year, there are even more competitors to fight against. While the Xiaomi 17 Ultra continues to compete against the Honor Magic8 Pro, the Honor phone is still S$300 more affordable while sporting the same processor, a larger battery and faster charging speeds. On the plus side for Xiaomi, the 17 Ultra has the Magic8 Pro beat when it comes to detail retention in both telephoto and low-light shots.

The 1-inch main sensor, the continuous zoom telephoto, and LOFIC technology combine to produce a camera system that is among the best available on a smartphone right now — and arguably the best for users who want their photos to look like the moments they captured rather than AI-generated interpretations of them. EN→ESThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a remarkable piece of hardware that raises the bar in almost every area that matters. The camera system is class-leading, the display is stunning, and the performance is flawless. Having come from a year with the 15 Ultra, I expected to be impressed but not by this much, and yet here we are. The upgrades across camera, display, and battery life are substantial enough to make this feel like a true generational leap rather than a minor refresh. On a personal note. the flat display is a design choice I respect but don’t fully prefer, particularly for extended handheld use where the 15 Ultra’s curved ergonomics had a natural advantage. These are, however, fixable or adaptable issues. The hardware underneath is outstanding.

EN→ESThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra made me hate AI photos. I wasn’t a big fan of tweaking my photos using AI editing tools in the first place. There is a sense of personality in capturing imperfect photos. I am, after all, an incredibly average photographer! I know my photos aren’t artistic, and I’m quite happy with that. I don’t need an AI object eraser to remove people or objects, or (more recently) type and describe how I want my photo to look, and let AI do its thing. A lot of phones now offer several AI tools to help you create that “perfect” photo. So, imagine my surprise when Xiaomi said they don’t want to rely heavily on AI camera features, but rather deliver on true camera hardware to help capture perfect photos. After using the Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s cameras this week on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island, capturing over 500 photos, I can safely say I agree with their vision.

EN→ESThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra feels, at times, like using a camera that happens to be an Android phone. Those who value what large sensors and Leica-approved optics can do are going to be in photography heaven here. On the flip side, however, there's the consideration of the noisy "rattle" from that new camera system when it's not active, the huge camera enclosure to the rear, and the simple fact that a 75-100mm mechanical zoom is only a marginal gain. This is the Xiaomi 17 Ultra review after two months* -- okay, okay, the two months isn't exactly accurate, because I tested the China Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica for a month and half, and then this global version of the standard Ultra for two weeks. But still, other than some superficial changes, the camera system of both models of the Ultra I tested are nearly identical, so hence I said I have been using it for two months. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and features a top-tier camera system headlined by a 1-inch sensor main camera and a Periscope zoom with variable aperture between 75mm and 100mm.

The camera system is truly excellent, and at times, this feels more like a camera than a phone.Of course, no product is perfect, and there are a few areas where Xiaomi is bested by the competition. For instance, both the Oppo Find X9 Pro and Honor Magic 8 Pro have better battery life (in my experience), and they’re better for macro photography, too. But does that mean they’re better choices? It sets the standard for telephoto clarity, steps up its selfie game, and that lead lens remains a shortcut to bokeh brilliance. The film-like image processing and a selection of official accessories also help it stand out from less characterful rivals. You’re also getting flagship-grade performance, rapid charging speeds and a screen that’s simply gorgeous. It’s undeniably expensive, though. The more mainstream design and a battery that’s not quite class-leading also mean it’s perhaps not quite as special as earlier efforts were, though Leica lovers probably won’t mind too much.

From the 1-inch primary sensor to the new continuous optical zoom telephoto system, the phone is engineered around photography rather than just adding impressive specs for the sake of it. In both daylight and low light, it consistently delivers results that are among the best I’ve seen on a smartphone so far this year. Beyond the cameras, the upgrades are meaningful. A larger 6.9-inch flat display, a massive 6,800mAh battery without added bulk, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset all make this a serious flagship package. Xiaomi really caught everyone off guard by dropping the Xiaomi 17 Ultra months ahead of schedule. Usually, we have to wait until spring for the "Ultra" flagship, but it's already here to kick off 2026 with some massive changes. The design has seen a complete overhaul. The curved screen is gone, replaced by a fully flat display that feels much more like the Pro Max. It’s significantly better for gaming and applying screen protectors, even if the flat back feels a bit sharper in the hand compared to the older 15 Ultra. But the real controversy is the camera system.

EN→ESThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra was announced on December 25, 2025, and released just two days later, positioning itself firmly in the ultra-premium flagship segment. It comes in two versions, including a Leica Edition with a mechanical zoom ring, which immediately sets it apart for camera enthusiasts. The phone feels solid and premium with its glass front, aluminum frame, and fiber-reinforced plastic or eco-leather back. At 230 grams and 8.5 mm thickness, it is heavy but well-balanced.
