Samsung 5420 Octa

El Samsung Exynos 5420 Octa (también llamado Exynos 5 Octa) es un sistema en un chip (SoC) para smartphones y tablets. Fue lanzado en mediados de 2013 junto con el Samsung Galaxy Note 3 y tiene cuatro núcleos Cortex-A15 con frecuencia de hasta 1,9 GHz. Además, hay otros cuatro núcleos Cortex-A7 a 1,3 GHz, una GPU ARM Mali-T628 MP6 y un controlador de memoria 2x 32 bit LPDDR3(E)-1866 hasta 14,9 GB/s.

Procesador

Comparado con la arquitectura Cortex-A9 y Cortex-A7 comúnmente usada, los núcleos del A15 ofrecen por lo menos 50 porciento más desempeño, lo que hace que el Exynos 5420 sea uno de los SoCs ARM más veloces de 2013. En promedio, el rendimiento de la CPU es casi igual al del Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 o Nvidia Tegra 4.

Además, Samsung integró cuatro núcleos Cortex-A7 con frecuencia de hasta 1,3 GHz. Dependiendo de la carga del sistema, el SoC realizará la conmutación automáticamente entre los núcleos A15 más poderosos y los núcleos A7 más eficientes, para mejorar el consumo de energía en un concepto que Samsung llama big.LITTLE". En contraste con el anterior Exynos 5410, los ocho núcleos pueden ser usados simultáneamente, de esta forma el chip puede ser descrito como el primer "verdadero" SoC octa-core en su clase.

Gráficos

El Exynos 5420 integra una GPU Mali-T628 MP6, que ofrece seis shader clusters con frecuencia de hasta 600 MHz (115 GFLOPS). La Mali-T628 soporta OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenCL 1.1 y DirectX 11 y ofrece un rendimiento que está sólo un poco atrás del Adreno 330 (Snapdragon 800) o un PowerVR G6430 (Apple A7). Por eso, la GPU es una de las soluciones de gama alta a partir de 2013 y puede ejecutar incluso los juegos Android más exigentes con resoluciones (hasta 2560 x 1600 pixeles) y detalles altos.

Consumo de Energía

El Exynos 5 Octa debe tener un TDP máximo estimado de cerca de 3 a 4 W en un smartphone. Es posible que la carga cause ahogamiento de la CPU o de la GPU, especialmente en smartphones.
