Qualcomm 800 MSM8974

El Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 es un SoC basado en ARM para tablets y smartphones. Es producido en la TSMC y un proceso de 28nm HPM (High Performance Mobile) HKMG, mientras que el Snapdragon 600 era producido en 28nm LP. Además de los 4 núcleos de la CPU con una frecuencia de hasta 2,3 GHz, el chip también integra una APU Adreno 330 de hasta 450 MHz, un controlador de memoria LPDDR3-1600 y varios módulos de radio (UMTS/LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS).

Procesador

La porción de la CPU se basa en la arquitectura Krait de Qualcomm, que es compatible con la ARMv7 ISA. Comparado con el Snapdragon 600 (Krait 300), los nuevos núcleos Krait 400 del Snapdragon 800 fueron un poco alterados con cache L2 más veloz. Gracias a una frecuencia de hasta 2,3 GHz y un desempeño alto por MHz en algún lugar entre un ARM Cortex-A9 y un Cortex-A15, el Snapdragon 800 ofrece un desempeño de CPU muy poderoso. El S800 compite con el Nvidia Tegra 4, el Samsung Exynos 5420 y el Apple A7 y es, por lo tanto, uno de los SoCs ARM más veloces del mercado, desde 2013.

Gráficos

Otra diferencia entre el Snapdragon 600 y 800 es la unidad gráfica. Mientras que el S600 implementa un Adreno 320 (400 a 450 MHz), el S800 tiene el más veloz Adreno 330 (450 MHz). Ambas GPUs ofrecen la misma cantidad de unidades de textura (8 TMUs), pero el Adreno 330 tiene 50 por ciento de shaders más (probablemente 6x SIMD16 vs. 4x SIMD16 de la anterior generación). Junto con la banda de memoria más alta, el desempeño es significativamente mejor. Como resultado, el Adreno 330 es un poco más veloz que el Mali-T628 (Exynos 5420) y que el PowerVR G6430 (Apple A7). Dependiendo del dispositivo y del enfriamiento, sin embargo, el desempeño puede variar. La GPU soporta OpenGL ES 3.0 así como OpenCL 1.2.

Características

Además el MSM8974 soporta muchas tecnologías wireless: Bluetooth 4.0, WLAN, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2,4/5 GHz), GSM (GPRS, EDGE), W-CDMA/UMTS (HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+, cat.29 DC-HSPA+), MBMS, cat.4 LTE, CDMA2000 (1X RTT, 1 × EV-DO Rel.0/Rev.A/Rev.B, 1× EV-DO Rev.A MC, 1× Adv Rev.A/Rev.B) y TD-SCDMA.

El MSM8974 puede codificar y reproducir videos UHD 4K en 3840x2160 a 30 FPS (120 Mbps H.264 High Profile) simultáneamente, mediante hardware dedicado. Además, soporta USB 2.0 y 3.0 y cámaras de hasta 55 megapixeles y 3D estereoscópico.

Consumo de Energía

Gracias al nuevo proceso de 28nm HPM HKMG, la eficiencia de la energía fue mejorada significativamente en comparación con su antecesor S600 de 28nm LP. Dependiendo del campo de aplicación, el consumo máximo de energía debe ser de cerca de 3 W para smartphones o 4 W o más, para tablets. Esto debe ser similar a SoCs ARM similares actualmente en el mercado.
