Samsung Exynos 7420

El Samsung Exynos 7420 Octa (también llamado Exynos 7 Octa) es un sistema en un chip (SoC) de gama alta para smartphones y tablets. Fue lanzado en marzo del 2015 junto con el Samsung Galaxy S6 y tiene cuatro núcleos Cortex-A57 con velocidad de hasta 2,1 GHz. Además, hay otros cuatro núcleos Cortex-A53 con hasta 1,5 GHz, una GPU ARM Mali-T760 MP8 y un controlador de memoria 2x 32 bit LPDDR4-3104 (hasta 24,8 GB/s). Es uno de los primeros SoCs ARM con pleno soporte para 64-bits para dispositivos Android.

Procesador

Cortex-A57 y Cortex-A53 representan a los sucesores de la arquitectura Cortex-A15 y Cortex-A7. Además de algunos pequeños "tweaks" que resultan en un rendimiento un poco superior, tanto el Cortex-A57 como el -A53 ahora soportan diseños ARMv8 de 64-bits (Cortex-A15 y -A7: 32 bit ARMv7). Gracias a su avanzado proceso de 14 nm, la velocidad y el rendimiento del Exynos 7420 son bastante estables incluso en benchmarks largos. En general, el rendimiento de la cpu es superior al de la Nvidia Tegra K1 o Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. 

Mientras que los poderosos núcleos Cortex-A57 aguantan software complejo y juegos, el SoC puede cambiar al más eficiente cluster Cortex-A53 en aplicaciones menos exigentes. Si es necesario, es posible activar núcleos individuales de cada cluster o incluso los ocho núcleos al mismo tiempo. Este concepto desarrollado por ARM es conocido como "big.LITTLE" y tiene como objeto mejorar la duración de la batería.

Gráficos

El Exynos 7420 integra una GPU Mali-T760 MP8, que ofrece ocho shader clusters con frecuencia de hasta 772 MHz (302 GFLOPS). La Mali-T760 soporta OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenCL 1.1 y DirectX 11 y ofrece un rendimiento superior al del Adreno 430 (Snapdragon 810) o PowerVR GX6450 (Apple A8). Por eso, la GPU es una de las soluciones de gama alta a partir de 2015 y puede soportar incluso los juegos Android más exigentes con altas resoluciones (Galaxy S6: 2560 x 1440 pixeles) y configuración de detalles.

Consumo de Energía

El Exynos 7 Octa es el primer SoC de smartphone a ser producido en un proceso de 14 nm con FinFETs (Samsung LPE). Por tanto, el Exynos 7420 es uno de los chips con más eficiencia de energía de principios del 2015 y corre mucho más frío que el Qualcomm Snapdragon 810.
