Qualcomm 820 MSM8996

El Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 MSM8996 es un SoC de gama alta basado en ARM mayormente encontrado en tablets y smartphones Android. Anunciado en diciembre del 2015, el S820 es el sucesor del Snapdragon 810 y debe comenzar a ser distribuido en el primer semestre de 2016. Además de los 4 núcleos de CPU (dos núcleos Kryo con velocidad más lenta y dos más veloces), el SoC integra una GPU Adreno 530, con un controlador de memoria LPDDR4 y soporta Wi-Fi (802.11ac + MIMO), Bluetooth 4.1 y LTE.

CPU

El Snapdragon 820 se basa en un concepto similar al del big.LITTLE de ARM, que combina un cluster de CPU de baja potencia (2 Kyro con velocidad de hasta 1,6 GHz) y un cluster de CPU de rendimiento (2 Kyro con velocidad de hasta 2,15 GHz). La velocidad de cada cluster puede ser ajustada individualmente (pero no por núcleo) e la velocidad más baja es de 310 MHz. El cluster de rendimiento tiene cache de 1,5 MB L2 y el ahorrador tiene 512 KB. Ambos deberían estar utilizando la misma arquitectura y soportan completamente el conjunto de instrucciones ARMv8-ISA.

Aunque solo sean utilizados cuatro núcleos, el rendimiento del 820 se posiciona en la gama alta de CPUs móviles para smartphones y tablets.

GPU

El Adreno 530 supera al anterior Adreno 430 especialmente en bechmarks exigentes. Por tanto es apto para juegos 3D modernos en equipos Android y debería clasificarse un poco por debajo de la GPU Tegra X1.

Características

El Snapdragon 820 ofrece diversas tecnologías inalámbricas como Bluetooth 4.1, WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ad (60 GHz) + MIMO así como un módem de celular de dos SIM que soporta LTE cat. 12/13.

El SoC puede codificar y decodificar vídeos 4K usando hardware dedicado (H.264 and H.265).

Consumo de Energía

Gracias al nuevo proceso de 14nm, la eficiencia de la energía fue mejorada significativamente en comparación con sus antecesores de 20nm.
