Apple A8X

El Apple A8X es un SoC ARM de gama alta introducido en octubre de 2014 junto con el iPad Air 2. Los tres núcleos de la CPU tienen una velocidad un poco más alta que los dos dentro del A8 (+100 MHz) de Apple. Apple afirma un 40% de mejora sobre el Apple A7 de 1,3 GHz en comparación con solo 20% del A8. Además, el A8X integra una GPU mucho más poderosa (2x 4-núcleos PowerVR Series 6XT (Rogue) GXA6850) bien como un controlador de memoria LPDDR3 de 128-bits.

Arquitectura 

Con el Cyclone 2, Apple logró mejorar el rendimiento ya alto del núcleo Cyclone original (Apple A7) en otros 10 a 15 por ciento. Ni el Krait de Qualcomm, ni el Cortex-A57 da ARM pueden competir con el IPC resultante. Los cambios exactos en el diseño no fueron revelados, pero esperaríamos caches y registros más grandes, así como una previsión de ramas optimizado. Como la arquitectura ARMv8, el Cyclone 2 soporta 64-bits.

Rendimiento

En comparación con los anteriores Apple A7, el A8X ofrece cerca de 20 - 70 por ciento más rendimiento. Especialmente el rendimiento multi-thread fue significantemente mejorado gracias al tercer núcleo de CPU, mientras que el poder single-thread es solo un poco superior (~20 por ciento). Según las puntuaciones Geekbench 3, el A8X es el SoC ARM móvil más veloz de finales de 2014. Sin embargo, el chip se beneficia claramente del soporte para 64-bits en la versión iOS del benchmark. Sin esta ventaja, el Nvidia Tegra K1 (Denver) dual-core aún es un poco más veloz en software single-thread (pero más lento en las pruebas multi-thread).

Gráficos

En contraste con especulaciones previas, el A8X integra un PowerVR de 8 clusters de la Serie 6 (Rogue) GXA6850 que consiste de dos GPUs GX6450 (2x 4 clusters) en vez de una sola GX6650 (6 clusters). El nombre GXA6850 fue creado por Anandtech, el diseño también puede ser llamado un GX6450MP2.

Cada cluster ofrece cuatro FP16 y dos ALUs FP32, resultando en un poder de cómputo de cerca de 230 GFLOPS FP32 a 450 MHz (velocidad estimada). La GXA6850 no solo derrota al Qualcomm Adreno 420 (Snapdragon 805), sino también al Nvidia Tegra K1 por un margen pequeño. Por eso, la GXA6850 es una de las GPUs más veloces para tablets de 2014 y puede lidiar con los juegos móviles más exigentes en altas resoluciones. Entre otros, la GPU soporta OpenGL 3.x/4.x, OpenGL ES 3.0 así como DirectX 10.

Consumo de Energía

En contraste con anteriores SoCs de Apple, el A8 y A8X son producidos por TSMC en vez de Samsung. Usando un nuevo proceso de 20 nm, el SoC consiste de increíbles 3 billones de transistores. El consumo de energía debe ser igual al de SoCs similares de gama alta de Qualcomm o Samsung.
