Intel 540M

El Intel Core i5-540M es una CPU de gama alta y dos nucleos para portatiles con una velocidad de reloj (gracias al Modo Turbo) de 2.66 a 3.33 GHz. Cada nucleo se basa en la microarquitectura Nehalem (Westemere). Hyperthreading permite a la CPU Dual Core majejar 4 hilos de forma simultanea (para un mejor uso de la pipeline). comparada con la rápida Core i7-620M, el 540M solo tiene 3MB de Cache de nivel 3 y una velocidad de reloj más baja.

Una característica de la nueva Core i5-540M es la tarjeta gráfica integrada llamada GMA HD y el controlador de memoria. Ambas estan en un 'die' distinto fabricado aún en 45 nm mientras que el de la CPU está fabricado en el nuevo proceso de 32 nm.

El rendimiento del Core i5-540M es de media superior al Core 2 Duo T9800 a 2.8 GHz y en algunas pruebas incluso más rápido que la Core 2 Duo T9900 (p.e. 3DMark 06 CPU). Por tanto, el Core i5-540M es una CPU doble nucleo de gama alta que debería manejar todo el trabajo diario y juegos. Solo las CPUs i7 de cuatro nucleos serán más rápidas en tareas que requieran cuatro o más nucleos (p.e. renderizado)

The power consumption of 35 Watt TDP (max.) counts for the whole package and therefore it is clearly better than the 35 Watt TDP of the Core 2 Duo T-series (CPU alone). Due to the Turbo Boost, the Core i5 is likely to use the whole TDP of 35 Watt under load and therefore can use more power than a similar specified Core 2 Duo. In Idle mode, the i5 uses clearly less power than the Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Los nucleos de CPU de 32nm de la generación Westemere puede tambien procesar algunas instrucciones nuevas para acelerar encriptados AEs. Comparado con las versiones i5 más lentas sin características AES, el 3DMark Vantage Communication Score mostró un incremento significativo con CPUs con AES activado.

La tarjeta gráfica Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) tiene una velocidad de reloj entre 500-733 MHz y rinde claramente mejor que la vieja GMA 4500MHD. Una GeForce 9400M (ION) debería ser aún ligeramente más rápida (especialmente porque las tarjetas Nvidia y ATI tienen un mejor soporte de controladores que Intel, al menos hasta ahora).

El consumo de 35 vatios TDP es para el paquete completo y por tanto es claramente mejor que los 35 vatios de TDP (unicamente la CPU) de la gama Core 2 Duo T. Debido a Turbo Boost el Core i5 parece usar el TDP completo bajo carga y por tanto puede usar más potencia que un Core 2 Duo de características similares. En modo reposo, el i5 usa claramente menos potencia que las CPUs Core 2 Duo.
