Intel Core i5-450M

El Intel Core i5-450M es un CPU dual-core para portátiles y funciona (gracias al Turbo Boost) con una frecuencia máxima de 2,4 - 2,66 GHz. Ambos núcleos de basan en la micro-arquitectura Nehalem (Westmere) y gracias al Hyperthreading el procesador es capaz de funcionar con 4 threads simultáneamente. El rendimiento del i5 está en la franja mediana. El i5-450M es similar al Core i5-520M, pero el 450M no proporciona funciones AES.

Una característica del nuevo Core i5-450M es la tarjeta de video integrada llamada GMA HD y controlador de memoria. Ambos están en una matriz separada que aún es fabricada en 45nm mientras que la matriz del CPU ya es fabricada en el nuevo proceso de 32nm.

El rendimiento del i5 450M en promedio es más veloz que un Core 2 Duo T9500 y gracias al Turbo Boost, aplicaciones single threaded funcionan aun mejor. Por lo tanto, el Core i5-520M es tan veloz como los CPUs Core 2 Duo de alta frecuencia y debe encargarse bien de la mayoría de los juegos y tareas multimedia.

Los núcleos de cpu de 32nm de la generación Westmere también pueden procesar algunas nuevas instrucciones para acelerar encriptaciones AES.

La tarjeta de video integrada Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) es conocida por funcionar con frecuencias de hasta 500-766 MHz y debe ser claramente más rápida que la antigua GMA 4500MHD. Una GeForce 9400M (ION) aún debe ser más veloz (especialmente porque la tarjetas Nvidia y ATI poseen un mejor soporte de controladores que Intel, hasta hora). Según los rumores, el núcleo GMA también usará el modo Turbo para regular la velocidad de frecuencia.

El consumo de energía de 35 Watt TDP (máx.) es de todo el paquete y por lo tanto es claramente mejor que los 35 Watt de TDP de la serie-T Core 2 Duo (sólo CPU). Debido al Turbo Boost, es más probable que el Core i5 use el TDP bajo carga de trabajo que los antiguos CPUs Core 2 Duo. Sin carga de trabajo, el i5 usa bastante menos energía.
