Intel 480M

El Intel Core i5-480M es un CPU dual core de clase media para portátiles y funciona con una frecuencia (gracias al Modo Turbo) de 2,66 a 2,9 GHz. cada núcleo se basa en la micro-arquitectura Nehalem (Westmere). El Hyperthreading permite que el CPU Dual Core controle 4 threads simultáneamente (para un mejor uso del pipeline). Comparado con el Core i5-540M, el 480M probablemente no soporta funciones AES, VT-d y Trusted Execution y presenta un Turbo Boost más lento (2,9 contra 3,06 GHz). Sin embargo, la frecuencia básica es un poco más alta.

Un recurso del nuevo Core i5-480M es la tarjeta de video integrada, llamada GMA HD y controlador de memoria. Ambos están en un molde distinto que es producido en 45nm mientras que el molde del CPU ya es producido en el nuevo procesos de 32nm.

El rendimiento del Core i5-480M en promedio es más veloz que un Core 2 Duo T9800 de 2,8 GHz y en algunos benchmarks incluso más veloz que el más veloz Core 2 Duo T9900 (como el puntaje del 3DMark 06 CPU). Por lo tanto, el Core i5-480M es un CPU dual core de alta capacidad que debe manejar todo el trabajo diario y juegos. Sólo los CPUs quad core i7 pueden ser notablemente más veloces en tareas que requieren cuatro o más threads (por ejemplo, el rendering).

La Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) integrada, es conocida por tener una frecuencia de hasta 500-766 MHz y debe ser notablemente más veloz que la antigua GMA 4500MHD. Una GeForce 9400M (ION) aún debe ser más veloz (especialmente porque las tarjetas de Nvidia y ATI tienen un mejor soporte de controladores que Intel hasta ahora). Según los rumores, el núcleo GMA también usará el Modo Turbo regular la frecuencia.

El consumo de energía TDP de 35 Watt (máx.) cuenta para todo el paquete y, por tanto es claramente mejor que el TDP de 35 Watt del Core 2 Duo de la serie T(sólo CPU). Gracias al Turbo Boost, el Core i5 probablemente use todo el TDP de 35 Watt bajo carga y, por tanto, puede usar más energía que un Core 2 Duo con especificaciones similares. En modo inactivo, el i5 usa mucho menos energía que los CPUs Core 2 Duo.
