Intel 460M

El Intel Core i5-460M es un CPU dual core avanzado para portátiles y (gracias al Modo Turbo) funciona a una frecuencia de 2,53 hasta 2,8 GHz. Cada núcleo se basa en la micro-arquitectura Nehalem (Westemere). El Hyperthreading permite que el CPU Dual Core maneje 4 threads de una vez (para un mejor uso del pipeline). Comparado con el Core i5-540M, el 460M no soporta AES, VT-d y funciones Trusted Execution y presenta un Turbo Boost más lento (2,8 contra 3,06 GHz).

Una característica del nuevo Core i5-460M es la tarjeta de video integrada llamada GMA HD y controlador de memoria. Ambos están en una matriz separada que aún es fabricada en 45nm mientras que la matriz del CPU ya es fabricada en el nuevo proceso de 32nm.

El rendimiento del Core i5-460M en promedio es más veloz que un Core 2 Duo T9800 de 2,8 GHz  y en algunos benchmarks aun más veloz que el  Core 2 Duo T9900 (como la puntuación 3DMark 06 de CPU). Por eso el Core i5-460M es un CPU dual core avanzado que debe encargarse de todo el trabajo cotidiano y juegos. Sólo los CPUs quad core i7 pueden ser notablemente más rápidos en tareas que requieren de cuatro más threads (como en rendering).

Los núcleos de CPU de 32nm de la generación Westmere también pueden procesar algunas instrucciones nuevas para acelerar las encriptaciones AES.

La tarjeta de video integrada Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) es conocida por funcionar con frecuencias de hasta 500-766 MHz y debe ser claramente más rápida que la antigua GMA 4500MHD. Una GeForce 9400M (ION) aún debe ser más veloz (especialmente porque la tarjetas Nvidia y ATI poseen un mejor soporte de controladores que Intel, hasta hora). Según los rumores, el núcleo GMA también usará el Modo Turbo para ajustar la frecuencia.

El consumo de energía de 35 Watt TDP (máx.) es de todo el paquete y por lo tanto es claramente mejor que los 35 Watt de TDP de la serie-T Core 2 Duo (sólo CPU). Debido al Turbo Boost, es probable que el Core i5 use todo el TDP de 35 Watt bajo carga de trabajo y por lo tanto puede usar más energía que un Core 2 Duo con especificaciones similares. En modo Inactivo, el i5 usa menos energía que los CPUs Core 2 Duo.
