Intel 2960XM

El procesador Intel Core i7-2960XM es el procesador quad-core más veloz para portátiles en el 3er trimestre de 2011 y sucesor del Core i7-2920XM. Debido a la marca Extreme Edition, el CPU debe ser fácil de acelerar (overclock) (multiplicador liberado). Se basa en la arquitectura Sandy Bridge y ofrece Hyperthreading para controlar 8 threads simultáneamente (para un uso mejorado del pipeline). Comparado con los anteriores quad-cores Clarksdale, el i7-2960XM ahora es producido en 32nm, ofrece una tarjeta de video integrada y funciones AES. Comparado con el 2860QM con frecuencia más baja, el 2960XM está especificado con un TDP más alto.

Sandy Bridge es la sucesora evolutiva de la arquitectura Arrandale. Las mejoras más notables son las nuevas instrucciones 265Bit AVX, el Turbo Boost mejorado, y la integración de la tarjeta de video en el núcleo del CPU de 32nm. Además, el controlador de memoria integrado fue mejorado y soporta hasta 8 GB DDR3-1333.

El Core i7-2960XM ofrece una tarjeta de video integrada (Intel HD Graphics 3000) la cual demostró ser evidentemente más veloz que la antigua Intel HD Graphics en los CPUs Arrandale y en el mismo nivel de tarjetas de video dedicadas de nivel básico, como la GeForce 310M. La HD Graphics 3000 también soporta Turbo Boost y funciona con frecuencias entre 650 MHz y 1300 MHz en el i7-2920XM (por lo tanto, debe ser similar o más veloz en el 2960XM). Dado que la tarjeta de video comparte el veloz cache de último nivel, el procesador es un poco más lento con GPU activo.

Debido al alto Turbo Boost, gran Cache L3, y Hyperthreading, el rendimiento del Core i7-2960XM es sólo ligeramente inferior al del Core i7-2600K para desktop. En 2011, son los procesadores móviles más veloces para portátiles. Por lo tanto, el rendimiento debe ser suficiente incluso para las tareas más exigentes, como la edición de videos HD o exigentes juegos 3D.

O alto índice de TDP do 2960XM permite o uso do quad core sólo en portátiles grandes y pesados (normalmente de 15" y superiores). Sin embargo, comparado con la generación anterior (Clarkdale, como el Core i7-940XM) de quad-cores, el TDP mejoró, ya que ahora cuenta con el GPU integrado.
