Intel Core i5-8259U
El Intel Core i5-8259U es un veloz SoC quad-core para portátiles, basado en la arquitectura Coffee Lake y fue anunciado en abril de 2018. Comparado con su predecesor Core i5-7267U, la CPU es ahora quad-core con soporte para Hyperthreading para la ejecución de hasta 8 threads simultáneamente. La frecuencia base es de 2,3 GHz, pero el Turbo llega hasta 3,8 GHz. también está equipado con una GPU Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 con 128 MB de eDRAM, un controlador de memoria dual-channel (DDR4), y de- codificador de vídeos VP9 y H.265. El chip aun es producido en un proceso de 14 nm con transistores FinFET.
En comparación con los modelos Core i5 e i7 más rápidos con eDRAM y 28 Watts, el i5-8259U solo tiene 6 MB de caché inteligente y la velocidad más lenta de la GPU Iris Plus.
Intel básicamente utiliza la misma micro arquitectura comparada con Kaby Lake, por ellos, el rendimiento por-MHz no se diferencia. El fabricante solo reformuló la tecnología Speed Shift para ajustes dinámicos más veloces de voltajes y frecuencias, y el mejorado proceso de 14nm permite frecuencias mucho más altas, combinado con mejor eficiencia que antes.
Teniendo en cuenta las velocidades del Core i5-8259U, su rendimiento debería ser entre los modelos de 15W Core i5-8350U y Core i7-8550U. El i5-8259U aún debería ser más rápido que el i7-8550U en la práctica gracias al aumento del TDP, especialmente durante cargas de trabajo sostenidas.
La Intel Iris Plus 655 Graphics integrada es el modelo GT3e de la GPU Kaby Lake (Intel Gen. 9,5). Tiene 48 Unidades de Ejecución funcionando a 300-1050 MHz (las velocidades más lentas de los 655, la más rápida es de 1200 MHz en combinación con el i7-8559U) y el rendimiento es comparable al una GeForce 930M o 940MX gracias al rápido caché eDRAM. Sin embargo, no existen mejorías significantes, en comparación con la antigua Iris Plus 650, por tanto, los juegos modernos, a menudo, no podrán ser jugados fluidamente o solo con las configuraciones más bajas o medianas, respectivamente.
Contrario a Skylake, Kaby Lake también soporta H.265/HEVC Main 10 con una profundidad de colores de 10-bits, así como el codec VP9 de Google. Los procesadores dual-core Kaby Lake, anunciados en enero, también deben soportar HDCP 2.2.
El chip es producido en un proceso de 14nm mejorado, con transistores FinFET, que mejoran la eficiencia aún más. Intel especifica el TDP con 28 Watts, lo que puede ser reducido a 23 Watts (cTDP Down) dependiendo del escenario de uso. El TDP es bastante alto, en comparación con el habitual TDP de 15-Watts para procesadores dual-core, pero permite una mejor utilización del Turbo de la CPU y GPU.
